Feminine hygiene products and black women's reproductive health: a review of health inequities, racialized marketing, and practice implications.

Feminine hygiene products (FHPs), including douches, washes, and deodorants, are widely marketed as tools for maintaining vaginal cleanliness and freshness despite evidence linking some products to adverse sexual and reproductive health outcomes. Black women have historically been disproportionately targeted by FHP marketing and use certain products at higher rates, raising concerns about the intersection of vaginal hygiene practices, health inequities, and structural stigma. This review synthesizes historical, public health, clinical, and sociocultural scholarship on FHPs and Black women's re

Identifying Future Health Professionals' Understanding of the Determinants of Health.

BACKGROUND: An understanding of the determinants of health is essential for all health professionals to be able to contribute to health promotion and disease prevention. METHOD: This project sought to explore first-year students' understanding of determinants of health through a photograph essay assessment. RESULTS: Approximately one third of the students chose to depict social determinants of health, such as poverty and homelessness. Other determinants, such as individual human behavior, physical determinants, and policy, were less frequently selected. Content analysis of the students' phot

Oral Health in Low-Income Older Adults in Korea.

Oral diseases among older adults are prevalent and a major public health problem, but public attention regarding this matter is quite limited. Many older adults experience limited access to oral care services. The study aimed to describe characteristics of oral health conditions, perceived oral health status, and oral health practices and to examine factors related to living status and accessibility to dental health care among 9,660 low-income older adults living in a suburban city in Korea. Approximately 42% of low-income older adults lived alone; 68% perceived their oral health as either exc

Supply and demand: Cellular nutrient uptake and exchange in cancer.

Nutrient supply and demand delineate cell behavior in health and disease. Mammalian cells have developed multiple strategies to secure the necessary nutrients that fuel their metabolic needs. This is more evident upon disruption of homeostasis in conditions such as cancer, when cells display high proliferation rates in energetically challenging conditions where nutritional sources may be scarce. Here, we summarize the main routes of nutrient acquisition that fuel mammalian cells and their implications in tumorigenesis. We argue that the molecular mechanisms of nutrient acquisition not only tip

An Exploratory Analysis of Predictors of Youth Suicide-Related Behaviors in Autism Spectrum Disorder: Implications for Prevention Science.

Although autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is associated with significant mental health concerns, little is known about suicidality, particularly among youth. To address this critical gap in the literature, the current study examined the predictive validity of (1) demographics, (2) core autism symptoms, (3) cognitive abilities and adaptive behavior, (4) comorbid psychopathology, and (5) medical problems, for suicide-related behaviors among autistic youth (N = 481; Mage = 11.56 years). As indices of suicide-related behaviors, parents reported on whether the child had ever (1) talked about killing

Effects of Gaba Derivatives on Anxious and Compulsive Behavior in Offspring of Rats with Experimental Preeclampsia.

We studied the effects of GABA derivatives on anxious and compulsive behavior of progeny of rats with experimental preeclampsia provoked by replacement of drinking water for 1.8% NaCl solution from the first day of pregnancy to delivery. In comparison with progeny of health rats, the offspring of dams with complicated pregnancy demonstrated high level of anxiety and the development of obsessive-compulsive disorder both at the early (40 and 70 days) and late (6 and 12 months) stages of ontogeny. GABA derivatives succicard, salifen, and phenibut reduced symptoms of experimental preeclampsia in o

Estrogen and cognitive functions.

Although the effects of estrogen on sexual behavior in mammals are well known, its role on other types of behavior, including cognition, have only recently been recognized. This review summarizes work conducted in our laboratory and others with the aim of identifying the effects of estrogen on cognitive functions. The first section will briefly describe the neurobiology of estrogen. The second section will discuss the effects of estrogen on cognitive behaviors in mammals, as well as the physiological relevance of these effects and their applicability to human health and disease. The third sect

Traditionality and cancer screening practices among American Indian women in Vermont.

The study purpose was to examine the relationship between cancer screening and traditionality, using a culturally specific survey instrument. American Indian (AI) women were randomly selected from the Vermont Breast Cancer Surveillance System (VBCSS), a statewide mammography database. The 13 items that assessed traditionality examined identity, cultural beliefs, customs, and health practices. The sample of 115 was predominately married, educated, middle class, insured, and rural. Significant associations were found between traditionality and past mammography and clinical breast examination (CB

Findings on disruptive behavior disorders from the first decade of the Developmental Trends Study.

The paper summarizes the first decade of the Developmental Trends Study, a prospective longitudinal study of 177 boys. Initially, they were referred to mental health clinics in Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh), and Georgia (Athens and Atlanta). Since 1987, the boys, their parents, and their teachers have been followed up almost annually. The study is unique because the cooperation rate of participants has remained very high over the years, psychiatric diagnoses were derived from structured interviews (especially disruptive behavior disorders), and many risk factors were measured over the years. The p

Hostility and hearing protection behavior: the mediating role of personal beliefs and low frustration tolerance.

The authors examined whether hostility would negatively be associated with occupational health behavior, namely, the use of hearing protection devices (HPDs). Also examined as possible mediators were the protection motivation theory (PMT) components and low frustration tolerance (LFT). Participants were 226 male industrial workers, all exposed to potentially hearing-damaging noise. Hostility was negatively related to HPD use. It moderately correlated with the PMT components: negatively with perceived susceptibility, severity, effectiveness, and self-efficacy and positively with perceived barri

Forecasting total and cause-specific health expenditures for 116 health conditions in Norway, 2022-2050.

BACKGROUND: This study forecasts total and cause-specific health expenditures in Norway to 2050 and quantifies the contribution of four key drivers-total population growth, population aging, changes in disease prevalence, and cost per case-on future health care spending. METHODS: We forecast spending for 116 health conditions in Norway from 2022 to 2050, using historical and forecasted data of population growth, disease prevalence, gross domestic product (GDP), health spending, and residual factors. Our analysis included a reference scenario that forecasted disease-specific health spending; t

Racial/Ethnic Health Disparities Among Rural Adults-United States, 2012-2015: MMWR Surveillance Summaries / November 17, 2017 / 66(23);1-9.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Rural communities often have worse health outcomes, have less access to care, and are less diverse than urban communities. Much of the research on rural health disparities examines disparities between rural and urban communities, with fewer studies on disparities within rural communities. This report provides an overview of racial/ethnic health disparities for selected indicators in rural areas of the United States. REPORTING PERIOD: 2012-2015. DESCRIPTION OF SYSTEM: Self-reported data from the 2012-2015 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System were pooled to evaluate ra

Sleep problems and the occurrence of dangerous behavior within autistic people: A retrospective community-based sample.

Sleep disturbances affect 50%-80% of autistic individuals and are linked to heightened risk for psychiatric comorbidities and dangerous behaviors, including self-injury, suicidal ideation, and aggression. While previous studies have identified correlational relationships, few have examined whether sleep problems predict dangerous behaviors in large, real-world samples. This study used retrospective clinical data from a behavioral health nonprofit to investigate whether sleep problems predict dangerous behaviors among autistic individuals, accounting for age and adaptive functioning. The sample

Behavioral interventions related to plastic waste management in low-and middle-income countries: a systematic review using the behavior change wheel and the theoretical domains framework.

Addressing the mounting plastic waste problem requires system-level solutions, along with interventions that promote behavioral change. In low-resource countries, inadequate, if not absent, waste management systems lead to unsafe disposal practices, including open burning. While theory-informed approaches are essential for identifying enablers and barriers to target behavior change, their application is limited in these settings. Given the lack of a theory-driven synthesis of behavioral strategies to address plastic waste, this systematic review aimed to: (1) synthesize behavioral intervention

The correlation between sadomasochists' experience and their sadomasochistic behaviors and fantasies: A qualitative analysis of interviews.

Lacking a comprehensive understanding of sadomasochism makes difficulties in judicial dispositions, clinical interventions, and mental health services. This study explores the correlation between sadomasochists' growth experience and their sadomasochistic behaviors and fantasies. We interviewed 51 sadomasochists from a Chinese subcultural website, coded and analyzed the interview records, conducted correlation and cluster analyses on the reference points of the nodes of impressive experience and sadomasochistic behaviors and fantasies, and constructed the model of Experience-Behaviors and Fant

Zoonotic transmission risk in flood-prone river basins: community knowledge and behavioral determinants of leptospirosis in eastern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is a neglected zoonotic disease with a rising incidence in flood-prone tropical regions. In the Shabelle River Basin of eastern Ethiopia, recurrent flooding combined with close human-animal contact creates conditions conducive to transmission. However, community knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to leptospirosis remain poorly characterized, limiting effective prevention efforts. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in flood-affected districts of Mustahil and Fer Fer in eastern Ethiopia. Adult household heads or primary caregivers w

Cyberchondria-Related Behaviors Among Undergraduate Female Healthcare Students: A Descriptive and Exploratory Study of CSS-12 Dimensions and Demographic Characteristics.

Background: Cyberchondria, characterized by excessive or repeated online searching for health-related information accompanied by heightened health concerns or distress, is an increasingly recognized behavioral phenomenon. Healthcare students represent an important population for investigation due to their frequent exposure to medical information and digital health resources. However, the extent of cyberchondria-related behaviors and their relationship with demographic and academic characteristics remain insufficiently explored in this population. Objectives: This study aimed to describe the le
