BACKGROUND: Recent research has focused on a new group called the "weekend warriors". These individuals accumulate their recommended moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) over just 1-2 days, often during weekends, while remaining relatively inactive during the rest of the week. However, the effects of engaging in low-frequency MVPA on the risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) are not well understood. This study investigated the association between physical activity patterns and the risk of MetS among Korean adults.
METHODS: This study included 26,197 participants (11,804 male and 14,393 f

BACKGROUND: Young musicians starting their professional education are particularly vulnerable to playing-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMDs). In the context of research on PRMDs, physical and psychological associated factors are frequently highlighted without investigating their complex interrelationships. The objective of this exploratory study was to examine the associations between lifestyle, music practice habits, physical and psychological variables, and PRMDs in student musicians.
METHODS: Students of the Geneva University of Music participated in the survey. The primary outcome w

BACKGROUND: Physical rehabilitation may improve health and wellbeing outcomes for some adults living with long COVID. However, individuals living with pre-existing multiple long-term conditions (MLTCs) and long COVID may have additional rehabilitation challenges. This scoping review aims to identify the available evidence describing physical rehabilitation interventions for adults living with long COVID, to systematically map the reporting of pre-existing MLTCs, and to describe the characteristics of physical rehabilitation interventions used in adults with both pre-existing long-term conditio

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment can affect subsequent social relationships, including different facets of peer relationships. Yet, how prior maltreatment shapes adolescents' connections within school peer networks is unclear, despite the rich literature showing the importance of this structural aspect of social integration in adolescence.
OBJECTIVES: This study examines how childhood physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, and physical neglect predict adolescent social network structure as withdrawal, avoidance, and fragmentation among peers.

BACKGROUND: Sports are physical activities that provide physical, psychological, and social benefits for individuals with spinal cord injury/disease (SCI/D). However, most sports research has been completed on individuals with SCI/D who are aged >50 years, even though the majority of people with SCI/D are aged >50 years. Despite substantial evidence supporting sports for older adults not living with a disability, there is currently no research examining the impact of sports for adults with SCI/D aged ≥50 years.
OBJECTIVES: To explore the perceptions and experiences of individuals with SCI/D a

BACKGROUND: Several studies reported the beneficial effects of globus pallidus internus deep brain stimulation (GPi DBS) on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with inherited or idiopathic isolated dystonia. However, the impact of this intervention on physical and mental/psychological domains and the effects over time remain unclear.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature review from January 2000 to May 2019 and performed a meta-analysis of HRQoL outcomes based on the Short Form Health Survey-36 (SF-36) after GPi DBS in patients with inherited or idiopathic isolated dyst

INTRODUCTION: Depression is associated with negative patient outcomes for chronic diseases and likely affects consistent physical non-communicable diseases (NCDs) care management in relation to clinic attendance and medication adherence. We found no published studies on the integration of depression management in physical NCD clinics in Malawi and assessing its effects on patient and service outcomes. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of integrating depression screening and management in physical NCD routine care on patient and service outcomes in Malawi. We wil

Complaints of the arms, neck, and shoulders (CANS) represent a major public health problem but the long-term course is largely unknown. Our objective was to explore the 15-year course of chronic CANS and its determinants in a population-based cohort. During 1993 to 2012, 3050 men and women aged 26 to 65 years at baseline were measured every 5 years, up to 4 times. Complaints of the arms, neck, and shoulders and sociodemographic, lifestyle, mental health, and physical load determinants were obtained by self-reported questionnaires and physical examinations. Information on chronic CANS was used

BACKGROUND: Experiences of violence contribute to the occurrence of childhood asthma, but there is little information on the effect of early-life abuse on adult-onset asthma.
OBJECTIVE: We prospectively assessed the relation between physical and sexual abuse during childhood and adolescence and the incidence of adult-onset asthma in the Black Women's Health Study.
METHODS: We followed 28,456 women from 1995 through 2011 with biennial mailed questionnaires. Experiences of physical and sexual abuse that occurred during childhood and adolescence were obtained in 2005. Cox regression models were

BACKGROUND: Impaired physical fitness, a contributor to obesity and cardiovascular disease, has been associated with both an individual's socioeconomic status (SES) and with residence in disadvantaged neighborhoods. The aim of the study was to examine the extent to which neighborhood socioeconomic status (SES) is associated with impaired fitness, independent of clinical characteristics and individual-level SES.
METHODS: Two thousand five hundred five participants 25 to 42 years old examined in the CARDIA study from 1992 to 1993 underwent symptom-limited exercise stress testing. Physical fitne

There is a well-established relationship between mental distress, mental health disorders, and the perception of pain and physical dysfunction. While determining the root cause is often challenging, increasing levels of mental distress are associated with increasingly disruptive manifestation of physical symptoms and vice versa. In femoroacetabular impingement syndrome, patients with preoperative mental distress exhibit more impactful levels of symptoms. Patients do show symptomatic improvement with appropriate surgical management, even in the presence of mental distress. Patients and surgeons

Physical exercise, aiming to improve range of movement, muscle strength and physical well being, lately substituted the immobilization previously prescribed in rheumatic diseases. International guidelines, recommendations of Scientific Societies, and structured reviews regard physical exercise as of pivotal importance in treating rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia syndrome, osteoporosis, and to be considered in connective tissue diseases. Therapeutic exercise should: aim to improve firstly local symptoms and then general health; respect the pain threshol
