Evaluation of Hip Geometry Parameters in Patients With a Distal Radius Fracture.

BACKGROUND: Patients with a distal radius fracture (DRF) have an increased risk of subsequent fractures including hip fractures. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether women with a DRF have certain hip geometry parameters known to indicate susceptibility to hip fractures. METHODS: We compared bone mineral density (BMD) and hip geometry parameters (hip axis length, neck shaft angle, mean cortical thickness, femur neck width, cross-sectional area [CSA], cross-sectional moment of inertia, section modulus, and buckling ratio) in 181 women with a DRF (DRF group) and 362 propensity score

International Interdisciplinary Consensus Meeting on the Evaluation of Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip.

In September 2018, an international meeting of doctors of various disciplines, with expertise in the detection and treatment of DDH, was held in Csolyospalos, Hungary. The aim was to achieve consensus on the detection and early treatment of the condition and to develop a standardized system of teaching and training for hip ultrasound. There was strong agreement that US screening is essential. Specifically the Graf technique was selected as the technique of choice. Universal US screening was strongly favored. Screening should be carried out as soon as possible, but not later than the sixth week

Results of Octaplex for reversal of warfarin anticoagulation in patients with hip fracture.

BACKGROUND: Patients with hip fracture who present anticoagulated with warfarin often require reversal of anticoagulation for safe hip fracture surgery. Vitamin K is typically administered for this, but requires 24-48 hours for maximal effect. These patients have an increased delay to surgery and increased mortality. Octaplex is a prothrombin complex concentrate (PCC) that reverses warfarin anticoagulation in less than an hour. This study assesses the effectiveness and safety of Octaplex for reversal of warfarin anticoagulation for hip fracture surgery. METHODS: We reviewed the medical record

MRI in Postreduction Evaluation of Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip: Our Experience.

BACKGROUND: Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is one of the most common congenital defects in the newborn. When its severe form is not corrected, it is associated with long-term morbidity. Closed reduction with casting is the standard primary treatment and reduction is confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We reported our experience on the reliability of MRI in postreduction assessment of DDH. METHODS: All children who underwent closed reduction for Graf type IV DDH at our institution between September 2010 and June 2016 were retrospectively reviewed. Since 2010 we assessed po

Developmental dysplasia of the hip and clubfoot treated by Pavlik and Ponseti methods.

Children having both typical developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) and clubfoot are rare, and early treatments of both conditions are recommended. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the Ponseti method of clubfoot treatment on hips with DDH. After institutional review board approval, we identified children treated by the Ponseti and Pavlik methods between 2003 and 2016. During the Ponseti method treatment, the duration of manipulations, number of casts, tenotomies performed, and days in clubfoot orthosis were recorded. During DDH treatment, we registered duration for Pavlik

US-guided Musculoskeletal Interventions in the Hip with MRI and US Correlation.

Hip pain is a commonly reported primary symptom with many potential causes. The causal entity can remain elusive, even after clinical history review, physical examination, and diagnostic imaging. Although there are many options for definitive treatment, many of these procedures are invasive, are associated with risk of morbidity, and can be unsuccessful, with lengthy revision surgery required. Percutaneous musculoskeletal intervention is an attractive alternative to more invasive procedures and an indispensable tool for evaluating and managing hip pain. US is an ideal modality for imaging guid

Hemiarthroplasty in the Hip Fracture Patient with Renal Impairment: To Cement or Not to Cement.

PURPOSE: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have a higher risk of complications when undergoing hip hemiarthroplasty. The primary aim is to test the null hypothesis that there is no difference between cemented and uncemented stem loosening rates in patients with CKD who receive a hip hemiarthroplasty for femoral neck fractures. The secondary aim is to determine the effect of increasing severity of renal disease on the rate of stem loosening in this CKD patient subset. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study of all patients with CKD who underwent a hip hemiarthroplasty for a traum

Influence of Total Knee Arthroplasty on Hip Rotational Range of Motion.

BACKGROUND: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) aims to correct the rotation, as well as the alignment and articulation, of the osteoarthritic knee. We hypothesized that, in addition to improving knee kinematics, TKA affects hip rotational movement. The objective of this study was to evaluate variation in lower extremity alignment and hip rotational range of motion (ROM) after TKA. METHODS: A total of 47 patients (53 knees) with primary varus knee osteoarthritis who were scheduled for primary TKA at our center were enrolled. Hip rotational ROM was measured with the patient in supine position with 9

Concomitant Septic Arthritis of the Hip in Patients with Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head.

INTRODUCTION: Septic hip is a rare condition and is known to occur in immune-compromised patients. In general, surgeons are not concerned about the superimposed septic hip when they operate on patients with osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) if the patient is not immune compromised. We evaluated 1) the proportion of septic arthritis among patients with ONFH, 2) the clinical and laboratory features, and 3) the outcomes of two-stage THA in those patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We identified patients who were diagnosed as having concomitant septic arthritis of the hip among 1,226 patients

The impact of sarcopenic obesity on knee and hip osteoarthritis: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: The progressive, debilitating nature of knee and hip osteoarthritis can result in severe, persistent pain and disability, potentially leading to a need for total joint arthroplasty (TJA) in end-stage osteoarthritis. TJA in adults with obesity is associated with increased surgical risk and prolonged recovery, yet classifying obesity only using body mass index (BMI) precludes distinction of obesity phenotypes and their impact on surgical risk and recovery. The sarcopenic obesity phenotype, characterized by high adiposity and low skeletal muscle mass, is associated with higher infecti

Is calcium phosphate augmentation a viable option for osteoporotic hip fractures?

UNLABELLED: The use of calcium phosphate bone cement has been described to allow for retention of reduction. Therefore, we evaluated whether augmentation with resorbable calcium phosphate could improve fracture stability in osteoporotic hip fractures. The results showed that augmentation with calcium phosphate cement significantly improved the stability of intertrochanteric fractures. INTRODUCTION: The aim with this study was to measure whether augmentation with resorbable calcium phosphate cement could improve fracture stability in osteoporotic hip fractures. METHODS: We retrospectively rev

The Merete BioBall system in hip revision surgery: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Modular hip arthroplasty is widely recognized in hip surgery; nevertheless, despite advances in prosthetic design, the incidence of hip revision surgery is increasing. In these procedures, a modular adapter that engages the femoral stem and the modular femoral head could be useful in order to protect the neck-head junction and restore preoperative biomechanics and soft tissue tension when the femoral or acetabular component should be retained. The Merete™ BioBall™ system (Merete Medical, Berlin, Germany) could fill this need. However the literature regarding this device is sparse,
