Japanese narrow band imaging expert team classification of colorectal polyps: A validation study from India.

BACKGROUND: Japanese narrow band imaging expert team (JNET) classification has a diagnostic accuracy above 90% in differentiating neoplastic from non-neoplastic colonic polyps as well as estimating the depth of invasion in colorectal cancer. However, its validation outside Japan is limited to expert centers and requires magnifying endoscopes. AIMS AND METHODS: This study aimed at validating the JNET classification prospectively in a real-world setting in India using magnifying endoscopes with dual focus. We analyzed consecutive patients with colonic polyps detected via these endoscopes. The J

Barriers to Cervical Cancer Screening in India: Insights from National Family Health Survey-5 Data.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer, one of the commonest malignancies, can be prevented and cured through early diagnosis. Screening plays an important role in its control strategy, and India has dedicated strategies to its implementation. However, screening uptake is low in India. We examined how sociocultural and financial factors affect Indian women's cervical cancer-screening uptake behaviour. METHODS: Cervical cancer screening-uptake and relevant social, cultural, and financial data obtained from round-5 of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) were used for analysis. We examined 399,039 eli

Tobacco cessation among dual users: analysis of two rounds of Global Adult Tobacco Survey, India.

OBJECTIVE: The tobacco epidemic in India involves extensive use of smoking and smokeless tobacco products, with nearly 24 million dual users (using both forms) in 2016-17. Tobacco cessation among dual users remains underexplored. This study examines the pattern and determinants of tobacco cessation among dual users using the transtheoretical model. METHODS: Data from two rounds of the Global Adult Tobacco Survey, India (2009-10 and 2016-17) were used (pooled sample of 6956 current dual users) to estimate the prevalence of tobacco cessation stages (precontemplation, contemplation, preparation,

Assessment of land use land cover changes and urban heat island dynamics of Mumbai, India.

Urbanization serves as the predominant force driving changes in global land use and land cover (LULC), resulting in persistent or irreversible environmental degradation and climatic shifts. This study examines the impact of LULC in Mumbai on land surface temperature (LST) from 2003 to 2023 and the dynamics of urban heat islands (UHIs). Various indices such as the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), normalized difference water index (NDWI), and normalized difference built-up index (NDBI) were utilized to assess the spatial variability of LST across different land use/land cover class

Progressive fibrotic interstitial lung diseases in India: national challenges and implications for global health policies.

BACKGROUND: Interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) constitute a heterogeneous group of diffuse parenchymal lung disorders characterized by varying degrees of inflammation and fibrosis. Global estimates indicate that the incidence of ILDs has risen by over 50% in the recent years. In India, epidemiological data remain limited and inconsistent due to heterogeneity in diagnostic criteria and regional disparities, impeding accurate burden estimation and policy prioritization. MAIN TEXT: Among ILDs, progressive fibrotic forms, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) in particular, cause substantial morbidi

Phenotypic resistance to ivermectin in Hyalomma anatolicum populations from north-western state of Punjab, India.

Hyalomma anatolicum is a multi-host ixodid tick species that significantly contributes to the spread of pathogens, posing economic and health challenges for livestock populations. This study assessed the acaricide resistance status to ivermectin in H. anatolicum field populations from north-western state of Punjab, India by larval immersion test. Dose-mortality response was analysed using probit transformation of percent mortality and logarithmically transformed drug concentrations, and lethal concentration (LC50, LC90 and LC99) and resistance ratio values were determined. Bioassay results rev

Risk assessment of uranium in groundwater surrounding the Greater Noida industrial area, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Groundwater quality is an important concern for public health, particularly with respect to uranium contamination, which may contribute to radiation dose and chemical toxicity when used for drinking. An analysis of radiation levels in groundwater has been undertaken around Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India, using the LED Fluorimetry Technique. The concentration of uranium (U-238) in water samples obtained from submersible pumps, tube wells, and hand pumps in Noida is determined. The uranium concentration, averaging 10.62 μg L-1, along with the annual effective dose of 1.77 μSv y-1, falls within the

The state of postpartum contraceptive use in India: descriptive lessons from nationally representative survey data.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum contraception is a key tool to delay or prevent subsequent pregnancy after birth. Though prior research has demonstrated substantial dynamism in contraceptive use throughout the postpartum period, most measurement of postpartum contraception has focused on aggregate use of any method at a single time point. We sought to more thoroughly examine the continuum of postpartum contraceptive use amongst women in India. METHODS: We use 2019-21 National Family and Health Survey reproductive calendar data from n = 149,518 women with a birth in the one to five years prior to surve

Unhealthy behaviours associated with uncontrolled hypertension among adults in India- Insights from a national survey.

BACKGROUND: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are governed by a cluster of unhealthy behaviours and their determinants, like tobacco and alcohol, unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, overweight and obesity, pollution (air, water, and soil), and stress. Regulation of these unhealthy behaviours plays a crucial role in blood pressure control among individuals on hypertensive treatment, especially those suffering from uncontrolled hypertension. Hence, the present study aims at identifying the unhealthy behaviours associated with uncontrolled hypertension. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We did a seco

Trends in low birth weight across 36 states and union territories in India, 1993-2021.

INTRODUCTION: Low birth weight is an important measure of the health of pregnant women and newborns. We investigated the prevalence of low birth weights in India over nearly three decades to assess trends and convergence across states. METHODS: Data came from five waves of the National Family Health Survey (1992-93 to 2019-21). The prevalence of low birth weight was estimated. To explore the sensitivity of our results to missing birth weight data-since the completeness of birth weight information has changed drastically-we also estimated prevalence from multiple imputation models, Heckman sel

Birth defects services in low resource settings: implications from a community-based study in India.

Birth defects, or congenital anomalies, are important causes of child mortality, morbidity and disability. Guidelines for public health activities to address birth defects is currently unavailable for low- and low-middle- income countries leading to a critical policy and service gap. We used the results of a study conducted in eight villages under a Primary Health Centre in Pune district of India to determine the needed public health interventions to address these disorders. The study identified 90 children with congenital anomalies per 10,000 children under five years [95% CI 62.2-126.8]. Con
