Effectiveness of the Whole Inclusive School Empowerment (WISE) project in supporting preschool children with diverse learning needs.

AIM: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Whole Inclusive School Empowerment (WISE) project in supporting preschool children with diverse learning needs. METHOD: This study adopted a mixed method design. The quantitative section was a quasi-experiment comprising eight intervention preschools (378 students, 68 teachers) with a support team of an educational psychologist and a teacher coordinator, compared with eight control preschools (281 students, 61 teachers) without the support team. Teachers completed questionnaires on students' school readiness and behavior as we

Optogenetic inhibition of ventral hippocampal neurons alleviates associative motor learning dysfunction in a rodent model of schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia (SZ) is a serious and incurable mental disorder characterized by clinical manifestations of positive and negative symptoms and cognitive dysfunction. High-frequency deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the ventral hippocampus (VHP) has been recently applied as a therapeutic approach for SZ in both experimental and clinical studies. However, little is known about the precise mechanism of VHP-DBS treatment for SZ and the role of hippocampal cell activation in the pathogenesis of SZ. With optogenetic technology in this study, we tried to inhibit neuronal activity in the VHP which has den

Modification of Housing Mobility Experimental Effects on Delinquency and Educational Problems: Middle Adolescence as a Sensitive Period.

Residential mobility is one documented stressor contributing to higher delinquency and worse educational outcomes. Sensitive period life course models suggest that certain developmental stages make individuals more susceptible to the effects of an exposure, like residential mobility, on outcomes. However, most prior research is observational, and has not examined heterogeneity across age or gender that may inform sensitive periods, even though it may have important implications for the etiology of adolescent development. Moreover, there are important translational implications for identifying

Neuropsychological functioning in children and adolescents with restrictive-type anorexia nervosa: an in-depth investigation with NEPSY-II.

Several studies have investigated the neuropsychological functioning of patients with anorexia nervosa restrictive type (AN-r), but results are conflicting. Here we compared the neuropsychological profile of 23 female children and adolescents with AN-r and of 46 typical controls (aged 9-16 years) using the second edition of the NEPSY (a Developmental Neuropsychology Assessment) neuropsychological battery. AN-r patients presented subtle cognitive flexibility impairments in audiomotor responses (p = .033). Conversely, superior performance in verbal fluency (p = .024) and memory (p = .034) was ob

Learning new faces in typical and atypical populations of children.

Recognizing an individual as familiar is an important aspect of our social cognition, which requires both learning a face and recalling it. It has been suggested that children with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) have deficits and abnormalities in face processing. We investigated whether the process by which unfamiliar faces become familiar differs in typically developing (TD) children, children with ASD, and children with developmental delay. Children were familiarized with a set of moving novel faces presented over a three-day period. Recognition of the learned faces was assessed at five ti

Cognitive ability and dental fear and anxiety.

Dental fear and anxiety (DFA), as well as dental behavior management problems, are common in children and adolescents. Several psychological factors in the child, and parental DFA, have been studied and found to correlate to the child's DFA. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between cognitive ability and DFA in a population-based group of children with identified behavior and learning problems. In conjunction with a dental examination at 11 yr of age, 70 children were assessed with regard to DFA using the Children's Fear Survey Schedule Dental Subscale (CFSS-DS), and th

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 neurodegeneration differentially affects error-based and strategic-based visuomotor learning.

There are different types of visuomotor learning. Among the most studied is motor error-based learning where the sign and magnitude of the error are used to update motor commands. However, there are other instances where individuals show visuomotor learning even if the sign or magnitude of the error is precluded. Studies with patients suggest that the former learning is impaired after cerebellar lesions, while basal ganglia lesions disrupt the latter. Nevertheless, the cerebellar role is not restricted only to error-based learning, but it also contributes to several cognitive processes. Theref

Differentiating literacy growth of ELL students with LD from other high-risk subgroups and general education peers: evidence from grades 3-10.

The authors used a large data set (N = 1,011,549) to examine literacy growth over a single school year comparing general education (GenEd) students to three high-risk subgroups: English language learners (ELL), those with a specific learning disability (LD), and those identified as both LD and ELL (LD-ELL) in students in Grades 3-10. The authors were particularly interested in whether variability existed between initial status and the growth trajectories of the three high-risk groups on measures of spelling, fluency, and reading comprehension across the school year and whether this variability

The effect of variable practice on wheelchair propulsive efficiency and propulsive timing.

AIM: The net mechanical efficiency of wheelchair propulsion is very low, approximately 13%. It is necessary to look for effective practice methods to obtain greater output with less energy expenditure during wheelchair propulsions. Literature indicates that variable practice (VP) is more effective than constant practice (CP) in motor-skill learning. However, it is unknown if VP is more effective than CP in improving wheelchair propulsive efficiency. The purpose of the study was to determine how propulsive efficiency and propulsive timing were affected by variable practice and constant practice

Guanidinoacetate methyltransferase deficiency (GAMT).

An increasing number of disorders of metabolism are becoming amenable to the treatment, and GAMT deficiency is one of them. The symptoms and signs are reviewed, emphasising that delayed language development is a particular feature. Other symptoms include learning disorders, autistic behaviour, epileptic seizures, and movement disorders. The condition is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner, and mutations in the GAMT gene severely affect the activity of guanidinoacetate. The MRI scan shows an increased signal in the globus pallidus, and the diagnosis is confirmed by finding increased guan

Measuring adult literacy students' reading skills using the Gray Oral Reading Test.

There are not enough reading tests standardized on adults who have very low literacy skills, and therefore tests standardized on children are frequently administered. This study addressed the complexities and problems of using a test normed on children to measure the reading comprehension skills of 193 adults who read at approximately third through fifth grade reading grade equivalency levels. Findings are reported from an analysis of the administration of Form A of the Gray Oral Reading Tests-Fourth Edition (Wiederholt & Bryant, 2001a, b). Results indicated that educators and researchers shou

Using a stimulus correlated with reprimands to suppress automatically maintained eye poking.

A functional analysis indicated that chronic eye poking exhibited by a woman with profound mental retardation persisted in the absence of social contingencies. We initiated a procedure in which a therapist delivered a punisher (mild reprimand) contingent on eye poking in the presence, but not the absence, of a neutral stimulus (wristbands). Subsequently, eye poking was suppressed when the participant wore the wristbands in novel environments without the reprimand contingency.

The non-invasive Berlin Brain-Computer Interface: fast acquisition of effective performance in untrained subjects.

Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) systems establish a direct communication channel from the brain to an output device. These systems use brain signals recorded from the scalp, the surface of the cortex, or from inside the brain to enable users to control a variety of applications. BCI systems that bypass conventional motor output pathways of nerves and muscles can provide novel control options for paralyzed patients. One classical approach to establish EEG-based control is to set up a system that is controlled by a specific EEG feature which is known to be susceptible to conditioning and to let t
