Preventive health behaviours among parents of infants aged four months.

Six preventive health behaviours have been frequently identified as having the potential to reduce mortality and morbidity during infancy: breast-feeding until the age of six months; no solid food until after four months of age; immunisation against whooping cough, diphtheria, poliomyelitis and tetanus; the use of a baby capsule to restrain the infant when travelling in a motor vehicle; regular attendance at a health care provider for preventive health checks; and no maternal smoking. This study surveyed 191 primiparous women four months after the birth of their babies to explore the proportio

Medical supervision for contraception: too little or too much?

The need to provide medical supervision in contraceptive services is reviewed in the context of the situation existing in developing nations. The author contends that less rather than more medical supervision can be justified if one compares the relatively low incidence of complications from modern contraception with the inordinately high maternal death rates from pregnancy and its complications in these same countries.

A bird's eye view of PMTCT coverage at two regional hospitals and their referral clinics in a resource-limited setting.

BACKGROUND: While countries strengthen their health information systems, local health managers require alternative strategies to monitor their prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) programmes to improve coverage and service delivery. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the use of a postpartum audit to establish PMTCT coverage and programme deficiencies at hospitals and multiple primary health care facilities. METHODS: A cross-sectional hospital-based medical chart audit of pregnant women admitted in labour to their regional hospital. Their antenatal hand-held medical records were added to

Placenta response of inflammation and oxidative stress in low-risk term childbirth: the implication of delivery mode.

BACKGROUND: Caesarean delivery rate is increasing gradually in China and there is no doubt that delivery mode is closely associated with the maternal health and infant development. This study examined the independent effect of delivery mode on placenta inflammation response and oxidative stress response. METHODS: A total of 3474 pregnant women recruited in Ma'anshan Birth Cohort Study were the initial study population. Data on maternal socio-demographic characteristics and pre-pregnancy BMI were collected at their 1st antenatal checkups. Pregnancy-specific anxiety was assessed during the three

Assessment of left atrial functions in cardiac syndrome X.

INTRODUCTION: Maternity unit closures in rural and remote settings of Australia have left a substantial gap in services for pregnant women. In the absence of midwives, and when women are unable to attend a maternity facility, registered nurses (RNs) are required to fill the void. While maternity education can attempt to prepare RNs for such encounters, there is little documented to suggest it meets all their physical and psychological needs. The existing challenges for health professionals, practising a vast generalist scope of practice while living and working in a rural and remote location,

Stillbirth risk and smallness for gestational age according to Hadlock, INTERGROWTH-21st, WHO, and GROW fetal weight standards: analysis by maternal ethnicity and body mass index.

BACKGROUND: Appropriate growth charts are essential for fetal surveillance, to confirm that growth is proceeding normally and to identify pregnancies that are at risk. Many stillbirths are avoidable through antenatal detection of the small-for-gestational-age fetus. In the absence of an international consensus on which growth chart to use, it is essential that clinical practice reflects outcome-based evidence. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the performance of 4 internationally used fetal weight standards and their ability to identify stillbirth risk in different ethnic and maternal size g

Exploring the Relationship Between Maternal Psychological Factors and IgA Levels in Breast Milk: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Secretory immunoglobulin A (IgA) is the predominant immunoglobulin in human milk and a key component of neonatal mucosal immunity. While its biological functions are well established, the impact of maternal psycho‑emotional factors on its concentration remains largely unknown. No previous review has systematically mapped this intersection. OBJECTIVES: To synthesize evidence on relationships between maternal psycho-emotional factors-depression, anxiety, stress, fatigue, and sleep disturbance-and IgA concentrations in human milk. METHODS: Following the JBI framework and PRISMA-ScR

Breastfeeding and Developmental Outcomes in Infants with Prenatal Cannabis Exposure: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Human milk is critical for maternal-infant health, yet concerns about cannabis exposure through milk may discourage breastfeeding. We examined the relationship between breastfeeding and developmental outcomes among infants with prenatal cannabis exposure. METHODS: We used a regional perinatal data repository from an academic hospital system with universal maternal urine drug testing. Breastfeeding status was obtained from birth certificates. Developmental delay was identified through ICD-9/10 billing codes for delayed milestones or speech disorders. Infants whose mother tested pos

Could excessive zinc supplementation during pregnancy cause menkes disease? A hypothesis worth investigating.

BACKGROUND: Copper is an essential micronutrient critical for fetal neurodevelopment, haematopoiesis, angiogenesis, and immune function, with maternal transfer-particularly in the third trimester-playing a key role in establishing fetal copper stores. Disruption of this process, due to genetic defects or micronutrient imbalance, can lead to significant neonatal complications. OBJECTIVE: This review examines the potential role of excessive maternal zinc supplementation as an underrecognized environmental modifier in Menkes disease (MD), an X-linked disorder caused by mutations in the ATP7A cop

Adverse Effects of Carbon Black Nanoparticles on Maternal and Fetal Lungs in Pregnant Mice: Insights From a Metabolomics Perspective.

Previous studies have linked prenatal exposure to carbon black nanoparticles (CBNPs), a key constituent of air pollution and tobacco smoke, to respiratory abnormalities. However, the distinct impacts of particle size on the maternal-fetal lung axis remain poorly understood. This study investigated the maternal-to-fetal lung toxicological effects and metabolic shifts following exposure to 30 nm (CBNP30) and 120 nm (CBNP120) particles using a high-dose mechanistic exposure model. In maternal lungs, histological analysis (H&E and Masson staining) revealed severe inflammatory infiltration and sign

Maternal diabetes mellitus during pregnancy as a risk factor for strabismus and refractive errors in the offspring-A large-scale national study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether maternal diabetes during pregnancy is associated with increased risk of strabismus and refractive errors (RE) in their offspring. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study utilized electronic medical records from Clalit Health Services (CHS) in Israel, 2001-2023. Births were categorized by maternal diabetes type (type 1, type 2, or gestational) or no diabetes. Mixed models compared demographics and ocular conditions, including RE and strabismus, while generalized estimating equations calculated odds ratios adjusting for confounders. RESULTS: A total of 505 92

Pregnancy outcomes in women with the highest cardiovascular risk (mWHO class IV): A single-centre study.

INTRODUCTION: The modified World Health Organization (mWHO) classification of maternal risk is used to estimate morbidity and mortality in pregnant women with cardiovascular disease. Despite guidelines advising against pregnancy in the highest risk category (mWHO Class IV), successful outcomes have been achieved in select managed cases with specialised multidisciplinary care. This single-centre study examines pregnancy outcomes in this high-risk group. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 32 pregnancies in 30 women classified as mWHO Class IV between 2008 and 2022. Maternal d

Association of Maternal Air Pollution Exposure and Infant Lung Function Is Modified by Genetic Propensity to Oxidative Stress.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The association between air pollution and poor respiratory health outcomes is well established. Children are particularly at risk from air pollution, especially during the prenatal period as their organs and systems are still undergoing crucial development. This study investigated maternal exposure to air pollution during pregnancy and oxidative stress (OS), inflammation, and infant lung function at 4 weeks of age. METHODS: Data from the Barwon Infant Study were available for 314 infants. The exposure to NO2 and PM2.5 were estimated. Infant lung function (4 weeks) wa

Cotinine concentrations in maternal serum and amniotic fluid during pregnancy and risk of testicular germ cell cancer in the offspring: A prospective nested case-control study.

Maternal smoking in pregnancy may increase the risk of testicular germ cell cancer (TGCC) in offspring, but current evidence remains inconclusive. We performed a nested case-control study using cotinine measurements in maternal serum and amniotic fluid as a biomarker for tobacco exposure during pregnancy. A total of 654 males with maternal serum (n = 359, ncases/controls  = 71/288) and/or amniotic fluid (n = 295, ncases/controls  = 66/229) samples were included. Data on TGCC diagnoses and relevant covariates were derived from nationwide Danish health registries. Cotinine was quantified by liqu

Timing of gestational diabetes diagnosis, gestational weight gains and offspring growth trajectory: a prospective birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The evidence on the associations of the timing of maternal gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) with the comprehensive growth trajectory from perinatal to early childhood in offspring is limited. The potential mechanism remains elusive. Our aim is to estimate the associations of the timing of GDM diagnosis and gestational weight gains (GWG) with the growth trajectory of children from perinatal to early childhood. METHODS: A total of 7609 participants are included from the Maternal & Infants Health in Hefei cohort study. Primary predictors were the timing of maternal GDM diagnosis a
