Changes in respiratory activity induced by mastication during oral breathing in humans.

We examined the effect of oral breathing on respiratory movements, including the number of respirations and the movement of the thoracic wall at rest and while chewing gum. Forty normal nose breathers were selected by detecting expiratory airflow from the mouth using a CO2 sensor. Chest measurements were recorded using a Piezo respiratory belt transducer, and electromyographic (EMG) activity of the masseter and trapezius muscles were recorded at rest and while chewing gum during nasal or oral breathing. Oral breathing was introduced by completely occluding the nostrils with a nose clip. During

Muscular adaptations to short-term low-frequency downhill walking training.

This study examined muscular adaptations of knee extensors following short-term low-frequency downhill walking training. 22 young males (training group: TG, n=12; control group: CG, n=10) participated. TG conducted 40-min downhill treadmill walking (load: 10% of body mass, gradient: 28%, velocity: 5 km/h) 1 session/week for 4 weeks. Before and after the intervention, muscle thickness of knee extensors and maximal knee extension torques in eccentric (- 120, - 60, - 30°/s), isometric (0°/s), and concentric (30, 60, 120, 240°/s) conditions were measured. For TG, muscle damage markers were also me

Mechanisms of intrinsic force in small human airways.

We quantified the magnitude and investigated mechanisms regulating intrinsic force (IF) in human airway smooth muscle (hASM). IF was identified by reducing extracellular calcium (Ca2+) concentration to nominally zero in freshly isolated isometrically mounted 2mm human bronchi. Our results show: (1) the magnitude of IF is ∼50% of the maximal total force elicited by acetylcholine (10(-5) M) and is epithelial independent, (2) IF can also be revealed by β-adrenergic activation (isoproterenol), non-specific cationic channel blockade (La3+) or L-type voltage gated Ca2+ channel blockade (nifedipine),

The response of cortical alpha activity to pain and neuromuscular changes caused by exercise-induced muscle damage.

Exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) is characterized by pain, swelling, and shortening of the muscle; increased serum creatine kinase; decreased force output; and altered neuromuscular function. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of EIMD to determine the relationship between the peripheral symptoms, neuromuscular changes, and delayed pain sensation during a submaximal movement of the biceps brachii on cortical alpha (α) activity. In contrast to the control (n = 12) group, the experimental (n = 16) group participated in an EIMD protocol, and both groups were monitored for 13

Lower limb muscle strengthening does not change frontal plane moments in women with knee osteoarthritis: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis is a common musculo-skeletal problem accompanied with muscle weakness. Muscle weakness may be readily improved by resistance training. Greater muscle strength has been associated with a lower knee joint loading rate. METHODS: We conducted a single-blind randomized controlled trial of 54 female patients with osteoarthritis in at least one knee, according to the American College of Rheumatology clinical criteria. Patients were randomized into a 6-month high intensity progressive resistance training or a sham-exercise program. The primary outcomes were first peak knee

Physiological effects of botulinum toxin in spasticity.

There is considerable evidence that injection of botulinum toxin (BTX) into muscles with spastic overactivity reduces resistance to passive movement in joints supplied by the injected muscles. The demonstration of improvement in active performance of the paretic limbs has been only anecdotal to date, and represents the most difficult challenge in research on BTX therapy in spastic paralysis. Data are reviewed that indicate several neurophysiological actions of BTX, other than the blocking of acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular ending: effects on the central nervous system, including ret

Motor unit characteristics in healthy subjects and those with postpoliomyelitis syndrome: a high-density surface EMG study.

The purpose of this study was to identify optimal ways to detect neurogenic changes with high-density surface electromyography (HD-sEMG). For this purpose, we searched for the variables that most clearly discriminated between postpoliomyelitis and healthy subjects. We obtained HD-sEMG from the quadriceps muscle at different force levels in nine subjects with postpoliomyelitis syndrome and in matched healthy controls. Single motor unit action potentials (MUAPs), extracted from the HD-sEMG signal and the raw signal itself, were analyzed. Areas under the curve of the extracted MUAP waveform, indi

Relative contributions of neural mechanisms versus muscle mechanics in promoting finger extension deficits following stroke.

The origins of impaired finger and hand function were examined in 10 stroke survivors with chronic spastic hemiparesis, with the intent of assessing whether mechanical restraint or altered neurophysiological control mechanisms are responsible for the well-known impairment of finger extension. Simultaneous extension of all four metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints of the impaired hand was either externally imposed using a rotary actuator or attempted voluntarily by the subject. Trials were conducted both before and after administration of a local anesthetic, blocking the median and ulnar nerves at

A standardized procedure for using human corpus cavernosum strips to evaluate drug activity.

The main problem of using human corpus cavernosum (HCC) tissue to perform bioassay is linked to its limited availability further complicated by the heterogeneous source of the tissues used. Here, we show that gender reassignment is a reliable source of human tissue without major ethical problems. Indeed, the entire corpus cavernosum is obtained from the surgery procedure, which allows creating a standardized procedure to prepare HCC strip. In addition, human tissue, if kept in the fridge in the condition described, does not loose its ability to contract to phenylephrine (PE; alpha agonist), an

EMG-activity and muscular performance of lower leg during stretch-shortening cycle after cooling.

To test the effect of cooling on EMG-activity of muscles working as an agonist and antagonist in the lower leg, 12 men dressed in shorts and jogging shoes performed a drop-jump exercise after 60 min exposures to 27 degrees C and 10 degrees C. Cooling decreased mean skin temperature 5.6 +/- 0.4 degrees C (mean +/- SD, P < 0.001), whereas rectal temperature was unaffected. The muscle temperature measured from m. gastrocnemius medialis decreased 4.1 +/- 0.3 degrees C (P < 0.01) at the depth of 30 mm below skin surface. To find the optimal stretching velocity for potentiation of elastic energy, th

Activation dependence and kinetics of force and stiffness inhibition by aluminiofluoride, a slowly dissociating analogue of inorganic phosphate, in chemically skinned fibres from rabbit psoas muscle.

To examine the mechanism by which aluminiofluoride, a tightly binding analogue of inorganic phosphate, inhibits force in single, chemically skinned fibres from rabbit psoas muscle, we measured the Ca(2+)-dependence of the kinetics of inhibitor dissociation and the kinetics of actomyosin interactions when aluminiofluoride was bound to the crossbridges. The relation between stiffness and the speed of stretch during small amplitude ramp stretches (< 5 nm per h.s.) was used to characterize the kinetic properties of crossbridges attached to actin; sarcomere length was assessed with HeNe laser diffr

Sgd 101/75: a sympathomimetic that can be used to identify a new subtype of alpha-adrenoceptor, the alpha 1s-adrenoceptor.

When Sgd 101/75 was compared with clonidine in a number of tests for CNS activity, Sgd 101/75 exhibited little activity in any test. Sgd 101/75 raised BP without affecting HR in several species of anaesthetised animals. The rise in BP was subject to tachyphylaxis, could be antagonised by alpha 1-adrenoceptor antagonists, and was obtainable in reserpinised animals. The vasopressor effect of NA was antagonised by Sgd 101/75. Thus Sgd 101/75 is a directly acting partial agonist for vascular alpha 1-adrenoceptors. On the coaxially stimulated guinea-pig ileum and field stimulated rat vas deferens,

Rectus abdominis as a source of myopotentials inhibiting demand pacemakers.

We examined four patients with a demand pacemaker who exhibited transient symptoms of vertigo while trying to rise from the supine position. In two of these there was an epicardial pacing system with the pacemaker in the abdominal wall superficial to the rectus abdominis muscle; in the other two cases the pacing system was transvenous with the pacemaker superficial to the right pectoralis major muscle. It was found that the "pseudovertigo" was due to pacemaker inhibition caused by rectus abdominis myopotentials in all four patients. Changing the pacing mode from the demand to fixed-rate result

The esophageal motility disorder of polymyositis. A prospective study.

A prospective study of 12 patients with the diagnosis of polymyositis or dermatomyosiois was initiated to determine the characteristics of the esophageal manometric patterns in this group. All of the patients were women between the ages of 30 to 80 years and met three of four of Bohan's diagnostic criteria for these diseases. The patients' conditions were classified according to Rose and Walton's muscle weakness index. Almost two thirds of our patients exhibited distal esophageal dysfunction by manometry. Based on our roentgenographic and manometric data, we conclude that in addition to the we

Kinetics of accumulation, efflux and the pharmacological effects of tritiated dihydroazapetine on the rabbit aorta.

Azepatine, a potent alpha adrenergic antagonist, was catalytically reduced with tritium and hydrogen gas to form dihydroazapetine. The pA2 azapetine was 7.9 whereas that of dihydroazapetine was 6.6, corresponding to a 20-fold decrease in potency. 3H-dihydroazapetine is accumulated into three kinetically distinct compartment in the denervated rabbit aorta. Likewise, efflux of the labeled antagonist occurs from three compartments. The rat constant for onset of alpha adrenoreceptor blockade is 3.15 min-1 which is nearly identical to the rate constant for entry of 3H-dihydroazapetine into a rapidl

Effects of denervation and colchicine treatment on the chloride conductance of rat skeletal muscle fibers.

Membrane potentials, cable parameters, and component resting conductances were measured in extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscle fibers from adult rats in vitro at 24 degrees C, after 15 to 18 days of denervation by nerve section, and at seven to ten days following epineural injection of 100 to 450 mug of colchicine in the peroneal nerve. The denervated muscles were paralyzed throughout the experimental period, whereas the colchicine-treated preparations showed no clinical paralysis except for the first day or two. The EDL from the untreated side served as a control. Both the denervated and c

The effect of trimethyltin on acetylcholine release in the guinea-pig trachea.

The purpose of the present work was to characterise the effects of trimethyltin on the release of acetylcholine from parasympathetic nerves and its effect on the postjunctional cholinergic stimulation of a smooth muscle. The guinea-pig trachea has been used as a model. Prejunctionally, trimethyltin (3.0 × 10(-3) M) significantly enhanced in a reversible manner the high K(+) (75 mM) evoked release of endogenous acetylcholine and [(3)H]acetylcholine. The evoked release of endogenous acetylcholine and [(3)H]acetylcholine was released from a pool of acetylcholine being independent of extraneuronal
