Biological sex influences bilateral transcortical reflexes during unilateral upper extremity exercise in healthy adults.

The transcortical long-latency reflex (LLR) is a rapid feedback response that is thought to help stabilize movement following sudden disturbances and is a critical mechanism enabling precise upper limb control during unexpected perturbations. It occurs 50-150 ms after limb displacement and integrates both spinal and supraspinal circuits. Despite extensive research on reflexes during movement, sex-specific differences in LLR responses remain underexplored. Importantly, while bilateral reflex responses have been documented when both arms contribute to a shared movement goal, cross-transcortical

Colostrum extracellular vesicles are neuroprotective in models of Parkinson's disease.

Rationale: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects movement, muscle control, and balance. Effective therapeutic options for this condition are limited. Natural therapies, including lifestyle changes, probiotics, and muscle relaxants, have received attention for symptomatic relief. Colostrum, particularly its extracellular vesicles (C-EVs), has emerged as a promising nutraceutical with the potential to improve therapeutic outcomes in divergent diseases. Methods: We purified and characterized (C-EVs) as a putative cell-based therapy. Theranostic (biodist

Effects of Acetylcholine on Endothelial Function and Nitric Oxide Levels in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Randomized Sham-Controlled Study.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral neuropathy is a prevalent neurological disorder with multiple etiologies. Nerve damage frequently occurs due to prolonged high blood sugar levels and diabetes. Peripheral nerve fiber impairment, mediated mainly through dysregulation of Nitric Oxide Synthase (NOS) activity, induces irreversible structural damage. Acetylcholine induces vasodilation by stimulating endothelial nitric oxide (NO) production, which relaxes smooth muscle, and by triggering a nerve axon reflex. This reflex releases neuropeptides like substance P, which further dilate vessels and prompt histamine

Cognitive Muscular Therapy™ for low back pain: a pilot study.

UNLABELLED: Cognitive Muscular Therapy™ for Chronic Low Back Pain. BACKGROUND: Chronic low back pain (cLBP) is a major cause of disability. Research shows that people with cLBP over activate the abdominal and superficial paraspinal muscles and this may indicate an underlying pattern of antagonistic flexor-extensor tone. This study was designed test a new intervention for cLBP, Cognitive Muscular Therapy™ (CMT). CMT integrates biomechanical training to improve postural tone with psychological techniques for pain management. METHODS: The CMT intervention included five components: Understanding

Characterization of interlimb interaction via transcutaneous spinal stimulation of cervical and lumbar spinal enlargements.

The use of transcutaneous electrical spinal stimulation (TSS) to modulate sensorimotor networks after neurological insult has garnered much attention from both researchers and clinicians in recent years. Although many different stimulation paradigms have been reported, the interlimb effects of these neuromodulation techniques have been little studied. The effects of multisite TSS on interlimb sensorimotor function are of particular interest in the context of neurorehabilitation, as these networks have been shown to be important for functional recovery after neurological insult. The present stu

Pregnancy and labor increase the capacity of human myometrial cells to secrete parathyroid hormone-related protein.

Parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP), a oncofetal gene product possessing smooth muscle relaxant properties, has been found in rat and human uterine smooth muscle cells (USMC) where it is postulated to regulate myometrial tone and/or blood flow. Studies investigating the gestational regulation of PTHrP in human USMC have not been performed. This study was conducted to determine if pregnancy alters the capacity of USMC to secrete or respond to PTHrP. USMC cultures were established from 8 hysterectomy specimens (H) and 7 non-laboring (NP) and 5 laboring term pregnant uterine biopsies (LP)

The application of generalizability theory to surface electromyographic measurements during psychophysiological stress testing: how many measurements are needed?

Generalizability theory is an extension of classical reliability theory that allows multiple sources of measurement error in an experimental design to be investigated simultaneously. In the present study, generalizability theory was used to evaluate measurement error in psychophysiological test procedures used to differentiate tension headache patients from normal controls based upon measures of electromyographic (EMG) responding. Thirty-three subjects who met diagnostic criteria for tension-type headache and 40 normal control subjects who rarely or never experienced headache participated in t

Cholinergic systems and multiple cholinergic receptors in ocular tissues.

Acetylcholine (ACh), choline acetyltransferases and cholinesterases occur in cornea, iris-ciliary body complex and retina of several vertebrates. In cornea, ACh may serve as a sensory transmitter as well as a local hormone, the function of which is not delineated. The function of ACh as the parasympathetic neurotransmitter at the iris and ciliary body is well established. The muscarinic receptors on the iris smooth muscle are similar to the muscarinic receptors (M2 type in two way classification) at other smooth muscles towards their interaction with agonists and antagonists.
