Observation of velopharyngeal closure patterns following isolated stimulation of levator veli palatini and pharyngeal constrictor muscles.

This study, using mongrel dogs, showed the individual movements caused by the levator veli palatini muscle (LVP) and pharyngeal constrictor (PC) contraction, induced by electrical stimulation to each peripheral motor nerve. Each bilateral peripheral motor nerve of the LVP and PC muscles was isolated and stimulated electrically to induce the individual contraction of bilateral LVP and PC muscles. The movements were visualized by use of a fiberscope. Vertical movement of the middle soft palate was observed mainly at LVP contraction. Circular closure in the posterior region of the velopharynx was

Anatomical and functional evidence for lesion-specific sprouting of corticostriatal input in the adult rat.

Previous studies in our laboratory have shown that cortical lesions induced by thermocoagulation of pial blood vessels, but not by acute aspiration, result in 1) the preservation of control levels of the growth-associated protein (GAP)-43 and 2) a prolonged increase in neurotransmitter gene expression in the denervated dorsolateral striatum. We have examined whether corticostriatal projections from the spared homotypic contralateral cortex contribute to these effects. Adult rats received either a thermocoagulatory or aspiration lesion of the cerebral cortex and, after 30 days, received an inje

Projections of neurochemically specified neurons in the porcine colon.

The intramural projections of nerve cells containing serotonin (5-HT), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and nitric oxide synthase or reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate diaphorase (NOS/NADPHd) were studied in the ascending colon of 5- to 6-week-old pigs by means of immunocytochemistry and histochemistry in combination with myectomy experiments. In control tissue of untreated animals, positive nerve cells and fibres were common in the myenteric and outer submucous plexus and, except for 5-HT-positive perikarya, immunoreactive cell bodie

Preoptic neuronal circuit: atrial natriuretic peptide-containing neurons are sensitive to acute and chronic alterations in body fluid volume.

Atrial antriuretic peptide (ANP) concentrations were determined in rostral preoptic midline structures (organum vasculosum laminae terminalis, periventricular and medial preoptic nuclei) and in the subfornical organ by radioimmunoassay in rats with acute volume load and volume depletion, as well as during water deprivation. ANP-containing neuronal elements in all four areas (to a lesser extent in the medial preoptic nucleus) reacted very sensitively to acute and chronic changes in body fluid volume: volume load resulted in an elevation, volume depletion in a depletion in ANP concentrations. Sensory afferent projections and area 3b somatotopy following median nerve cut and repair in macaque monkeys.

The fidelity of median nerve regeneration and the consequent effects of regeneration errors on cortical organization were determined in combined anatomical and electrophysiological studies. In three adult macaque monkeys, the median nerve was cut, sutured, and allowed to regenerate for 7-13 months. After regeneration, distributions of afferents to the dorsal horn of the spinal cord and the cuneate nucleus of the brainstem were determined by making injections of horseradish peroxidase conjugates into the distal phalanges of digit 1 or 2. While label from a single digit on the normal hand was co

A midline area in the nucleus commissuralis of NTS mediates the phrenic nerve responses to carotid chemoreceptor stimulation.

The carotid body chemoreceptor afferents have been reported to project to a discrete area located in the nucleus commissuralis of nucleus tractus solitarius [A. Vardhan et al., Am. J. Physiol., 264 (1993) R41-R50]. The afore-mentioned study was done in spontaneously breathing rats and the afferents and efferents located in the chest wall and the respiratory tract of these animals were intact. In order to exclude the role, if any, of these afferents and efferents, in the present experiments respiratory changes were monitored by recording the phrenic nerve activity instead of tracheal airflow. Lower interhemispheric coherence in a case of agenesis of the corpus callosum.

Interhemispheric coherence and relative power were compared in a patient with total agenesis of the corpus callosum and age and sex matched controls. The patient showed lower interhemispheric coherence than normal controls in F3-F4, C3-C4, and in P3-P4 especially in the higher theta, lower alpha, and beta bands. Differences in relative power were much less marked. These results seem to reflect that interhemispheric connection is degraded because of callosal agenesis.

The parabrachial region as a possible region modulating simultaneously pain and tonic immobility.

Unilateral microinjection of carbachol (1 microgram) into the dorsal parabrachial region (PBR) of conscious guinea pigs produced a 100% increase in the duration of restraint-induced tonic immobility (TI) episodes. In another group of animals with a subcutaneous electrode introduced into the thigh region, microinjections of equivalent doses of the same drug in similar sites also significantly reduced the motor defense and vocalization responses elicited by the application of a noxious electrical stimulus to the skin. Both effects were blocked by pretreatment with atropine. The possible simultan

Topographic distribution of connections from the primary motor cortex to the corpus striatum in Aotus trivirgatus.

Connections between the primary motor cortex (MI) and the corpus striatum were studied in the owl monkey. Representations of specific body movements were elicited in MI by microstimulation techniques, and the efferent projections from these stimulation sites were labeled with wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase conjugate (WGA-HRP). Dense projections were found in the putamen ipsilateral to the injection site and sparser projections occupied comparable areas in the contralateral putamen. Representations of hindpaw regions projected to the dorsomedial portion of the putamen with only sl

Changes in preganglionic sympathetic nerve function following chronic morphine treatment in rats.

1. The effects of acute or chronic morphine treatment on the changes in blood pressure and pulse rate in response to ganglionic stimulation or blockade and to vagal stimulation, and of isolated atria to field stimulation or noradrenaline, were studied. 2. In pithed rats, intravenously injected hexamethonium significantly depressed the blood pressure responses to sympathetic nerve stimulation. The ganglionic blocking effects of hexamethonium were significantly greater in chronically morphine-treated rats, but were not significantly affected by acute morphine administration in naive animals. 3.

Neurophysiological evaluation of central-peripheral sensory and motor pudendal fibres.

Extensive neurophysiological investigations were carried out in 18 healthy volunteer subjects, and 6 patients with neurological disease. The tests consisted of spinal and scalp somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) to stimulation of the dorsal nerve of penis/clitoris, motor evoked potentials (MEPs) from the bulbocavernosus muscle (BC) and anal sphincter (AS) in response to scalp and sacral root stimulation, and measurement of sacral reflex latency (SRL) from BC and AS. In the control subjects, the mean sensory total conduction time (sensory TCT), as measured at the peak of the scalp P40 wave

Abnormalities of the blink reflex in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

The blink reflex and it's recovery cycle were studied in 26 patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome and 10 controls. There was a significant increase in the mean duration of the R2 response. The amplitude of the R2 response following paired shocks (mean R2[T]/R2[C]%) was 11%, 40% and 52% of the conditioning stimulus with intervals of 200 ms, 500 ms and 1 second in the patients, compared with 10%, 17% and 32% respectively in the controls. Half the patients, however, had normal recovery cycles and voluntary suppression of tics and blinks reduced the amplitude of R2 in all patients. These re

The C1 area of the rostral ventrolateral medulla oblongata. A critical brainstem region for control of resting and reflex integration of arterial pressure.

A population of neurons localized to a small region of the brain stem reticular formation, the rostral ventrolateral reticular nucleus (RVL), is the principal area of the brainstem regulating resting, reflex, and probably behaviorally coupled control of arterial pressure. The critical area of the RVL reticular nucleus engaged in cardiovascular control surrounds a cluster of adrenergic neurons of the C1 group, and is therefore designated the C1 area. C1 area neurons have a direct and extremely potent synaptic relationship with preganglionic sympathetic neurons of the intermediolateral (IML) nuc

Characterization of cat nasal afferents and brain stem neurones receiving ethmoidal input.

Stimulation of the nasal mucous membrane can initiate protective reflexes, particularly sneezing and apnea. Very little is known about the receptors in the nasal cavity responsible for initiating these reflexes, which are thought to be mediated by trigeminal rather than olfactory pathways. In the cat, the ethmoidal branch of the ophthalmic division of V carries this afferent information. The objectives of the present study were to determine a set of adequate nasal receptor stimuli capable of initiating these protective reflexes; to characterize the types of information carried in the ethmoidal

Long-term enhancement of evoked potentials in cat somatosensory cortex produced by co-activation of the basal forebrain and cutaneous receptors.

Averaged evoked potentials from primary somatosensory cortex (SEPs) were recorded before and after pairing the peripheral stimuli with electrical activation of the basal forebrain (BF) in anesthetized cats. Four pulses at 400 Hz were delivered to the BF 120 ms before each cutaneous stimulus and 10 to 660 such pairings were found to produce an enlargement of the SEP in 10 of 11 animals. The average increase in amplitude of the initial peak of the SEP was 69%. The SEP remained enhanced in five of six animals that were tested an hour or more after the pairing, and in one case the SEP was tested 4

Pathological display of affect in patients with depression and right frontal brain damage. An alternative mechanism.

Two patients are reported with the acute onset of pathological crying following right inferior frontal brain damage. Both had severe endogenous depression and neither had pseudobulbar palsy. These and other cases argue that two organic brain diseases--one structural and the other "physiopharmacological"--may interact to produce pathological display of affect that cannot be accounted for by traditional neurological explanations. A pharmacological mechanism for the rapid amelioration of pathological affect by tricyclic medications and its possible relationship to the newly discovered descending

Pattern of pyramidal tract collateralization to medial thalamus, lateral hypothalamus and red nucleus in the cat.

Stimulating electrodes were placed in the red nucleus, lateral hypothalamus and medial thalamus in order to determine whether pyramidal tract (PT) neurons send collaterals to those sites. The red nucleus projections are well-known, but it was discovered that PT neurons also project into the other two sites. All of the fibers that sent collaterals to all three sites originated from fast PT neurons. Those that responded to stimulation of the skin and that sent collaterals to two or three sites were predominantly fast PT neurons. Those neurons that responded only to cerebral peduncle stimulation

Weakness of head turning in hemiplegia: a quantitative study.

The strength of head turning was measured in normal subjects and in patients with hemiplegia of vascular origin. In normals the strength of head turning to the two sides was not significantly different. In most patients with a cortical, capsular or high brainstem lesion the strength of head turning away from the side of the lesion was reduced. In patients with a medullary lesion the strength of head turning towards the side of the lesion was reduced. The significance of these findings is discussed in relation to the cortical control of the sternocleidomastoid muscle and other muscles involved
