Oculocutaneous albinism in a rural community of South Africa: a population genetic study.

Oculocutaneous albinism type II (OCA2), the most common form of albinism worldwide, is prevalent throughout sub-Saharan Africa. The hypopigmentory phenotype distinguishes affected individuals as 'different' in a black population, resulting in problems of social acceptance and integration. Health issues include constant, lifelong sun-induced skin damage and poor vision. This study determined the frequency and distribution of albinism among the Vhavenda ethnic group living in the relatively low-income north of South Africa in a clan-oriented society. A retrospective study of birth records from r

Mental health effects of adolescent trauma exposure in a female college sample: exploring differential outcomes based on experiences of unique trauma types and dimensions.

Most studies on the psychological impact of trauma exposure focus on the response to a single type of trauma, with little or no attention paid to the contribution of prior traumatic experiences. The goal of this study was to disentangle some of the confounding effects of multiple trauma exposures by exploring the unique contribution to mental health outcomes made by specific types and dimensions of trauma. This report compares the psychological outcomes of college women who experienced different types of trauma during adolescence, including traumatic bereavement, sexual assault, and physical a

Association between child sexual abuse and sexual revictimization in adulthood among women sex partners of injection drug users.

Community-recruited women (n = 1490) were interviewed about their early and adult sexual victimization histories to determine whether there was an association between child sexual abuse and adult revictimization by sex partners and strangers/nonsex partners. Adolescent sexual abuse, lifetime sex-trading, drug treatment, and mental health treatment were examined as mediating variables. One-fourth of the women had been revictimized (i.e., experienced child sexual abuse and at least one instance of adult sexual victimization). Child sexual abuse was associated with both rape and other sexual vict

[Prevalence of psychopathology at a primary care center].

OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of psychopathology among those attending a primary care centre and discover its diagnostic distribution using the criteria of the DSM-III-R. DESIGN: A crossover study of the prevalence of psychopathology. A two-phase study was performed by systematic sampling of one of every four visits. In the first phase the GHQ-28 was used. For those with suspected psychopathology (cut-off point 5/6) a semi-structured interview, Goldberg's CIS, was performed. They were assigned a diagnosis from the DSM-III-R. SETTING: Maluquer Salvador Health Centre, Girona. PATIEN

Effect of oral hygiene education on children with and without subsequent orthodontic treatment.

The aim of the present investigation was to study whether an intense period of individual oral hygiene education would result in proper dental health behavior and to compare the effects of such education on 30 individuals undergoing subsequent orthodontic treatment and 30 controls without such treatment. The investigation consisted of two experimental periods: one period of oral hygiene education during which information on proper plaque control was given fortnightly for 6 weeks and one follow-up period of 30 months corresponding to the orthodontic treatment phase. The results suggest that it

Strategies used for childhood chronic functional constipation: the SUCCESS evidence synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Up to 30% of children have constipation at some stage in their life. Although often short-lived, in one-third of children it progresses to chronic functional constipation, potentially with overflow incontinence. Optimal management strategies remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To determine the most effective interventions, and combinations and sequences of interventions, for childhood chronic functional constipation, and understand how they can best be implemented. METHODS: Key stakeholders, comprising two parents of children with chronic functional constipation, two adults who experience

The one-week prevalence of neck pain and low back pain in post-secondary students at two Canadian institutions.

BACKGROUND: Low back and neck pain are common in the general population, but the prevalence among Canadian post-secondary students is not well known. We aimed to determine the one-week prevalence of neck pain (NP) and low back pain (LBP) among postsecondary students in Canada. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of students enrolled in the Faculty of Health Sciences and Faculty of Education at Ontario Tech University, and the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) in the Fall of 2017. Neck and low back pain intensity in the past week were measured with the 11-point numerical

Privatized Health Care System in Times of Crisis: South Korea's Health Care System Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic was a global public health crisis that demanded a "whole-of-society" response. In many countries, coordinating efforts across public and private health care sectors proved challenging. Yet South Korea maintained one of the world's lowest excess mortality rates despite having a predominantly privatized health care system, with 90.3% of hospital beds privately owned. This outcome was enabled in part by the government's strategy of disproportionately mobilizing and repurposing public hospitals as dedicated COVID-19 treatment facilities. These hospitals, historically few in n

A Brief Review of Vaccine History, Hesitancy, and Education Today.

Vaccination remains one of the most effective global health interventions, preventing substantial morbidity and mortality and advancing population health worldwide. However, vaccine hesitancy continues to limit vaccine confidence and uptake in some communities. This brief review summarizes the historical, social, and educational factors shaping vaccine hesitancy and outlines practical strategies to improve confidence and uptake. Key contributors include safety concerns amplified by misinformation, the rapid spread of misleading content through social media, and residual mistrust related to rar

Full Plate Living Evaluation and Case Series.

Dietary interventions can improve cardiometabolic health, however, affordability, sustainability, and efficacy remain a challenge. Full Plate Living (FPL) is a free, virtual, research-based, experience-centered nutrition program that has been shown to improve health. Here, we describe self-reported outcomes using FPL and highlight four participant cases. A cross-sectional survey was emailed to all 59,410 FPL members. They were invited to share their experience with FPL and their health changes in a long form interview. Descriptive statistics were performed. The majority of the 459 respondents

Enhancing public health surveillance: A statistical validation of potential sampling bias in large retrospective vaccine cohorts.

In the context of Global Health, massive administrative datasets have become indispensable tools for health surveillance. However, the sheer scale of Big Data can mask systemic selection biases that standard mathematical adjustments may not fully mitigate. In this study, I propose a methodological audit of a recent large-scale cohort (N = 2,975,035) concerning COVID-19 vaccination and oncological outcomes. By benchmarking the cohort's architecture against national demographic and epidemiological gold standards through single-proportion Z-tests, we identified notable structural divergences. The

Improving Patient Care by Integrating Social Determinants of Health Into Home Care Nursing Practice.

Home care nurses occupy a unique position in the health care system, observing patients in their living environments and coordinating care across multiple delivery sites. Social determinants of health (SDoH), encompassing economic stability, education, health care access, neighborhood conditions, and social context, account for an estimated 30% to 90% of health outcomes, far exceeding the contribution of medical care alone. This article examines the historical, organizational, and clinical foundations of SDoH within the context of home care nursing, underscoring the critical need for systemati

Individual and Cumulative Health and Lifestyle Risk Factors for Depressive Symptoms in Older Adults: Evidence from NHANES.

BACKGROUND: Depression in older adults is a multifactorial condition influenced by health status, functional capacity, and lifestyle factors. This study aimed to investigate the individual and combined associations of these factors with late-life depression. METHODS: Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), this study evaluated the associations of general health, chronic conditions, functioning, and lifestyle behaviors (including physical activity, sleep, diet quality, smoking, and alcohol use) with depressive symptoms among U.S. adults 65 years and older

The role of comorbidity and frailty in shaping the burden of atrial fibrillation: a multinational cross-sectional survey.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia in older adults and often coexists with other chronic conditions, exacerbating physical and cognitive decline and contributing to frailty. The interplay between frailty and comorbidity in AF remains underexplored, particularly regarding quality of life (QoL), health management, and outcome prioritization. Within the AFFIRMO project, this study investigated the experiences of older adults with AF and at least one chronic condition via an online survey. Frailty was assessed using the FRAIL questionnaire, and participants were grouped by frai

HIV-related stigma, couple relationship quality, and mental health in sero-discordant pregnant couples in Kenya.

HIV-related stigma negatively impacts the health of people who are living with HIV. Stigma may also affect sero-discordant couples where one partner is living with HIV, but the other is not. However, we know little about how HIV-related stigma and couple relationship quality jointly affect depression and anxiety in both the individual and their partner. We analyzed dyadic data from 491 sero-discordant pregnant couples in southwestern Kenya collected during 2019-2022 using Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM) methods. Controlling for relationship quality, HIV-related stigma perceived by b

Oral health in assisted living communities: A hidden driver of systemic disease.

Oral health is an important part of overall health, but it is often overlooked in older adults, especially those in memory care and skilled nursing communities. This paper discusses oral health problems in assisted living, how they are connected to serious health conditions, and a few practical steps one can take to mitigate or even prevent these conditions. Older adults are more likely to develop oral diseases due to changes in hygiene habits, normal aging, age-related medical conditions, and reliance on caregivers for daily oral hygiene. In many communities, limited time, lack of training, a

Dental treatment needs and treatment frequency of inmates in basel.

The aim of this retrospective descriptive study was to identify the treatment frequency of prisoners and the associated need for dental treatment, as well as to analyse the associations between the DMFT index, general health conditions (mental health) and health behaviour (cigarette smoking). For this purpose, the medical records (secondary data) from 2018-2020 of 317 inmates receiving dental treatment from two Basel prisons were examined, categorized and statistically evaluated using linear regression models (RECORD 1.1, 1.2). At the time of the medical history, 87.1% of the inmates were taki
