Ocular blood flow and choroidal thickness in ocular hypertension.

PURPOSE: Ocular hypertension (OHT) is a clinical entity characterized by elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) without optic nerve damage. In the presence of other risk factors, OHT may progress to glaucoma. This study aimed to evaluate ocular blood flow (OBF) and choroidal thickness (CT), which may be markers and/or risk factors that could assess the progression of OHT to glaucoma. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Age and gender matched 60 eyes of 32 patients with OHT and 61 eyes of 31 control patients were included for this study. All participants underwent a detailed ophthalmological examination includ

In-orbit geometric calibration of multi-linear array optical remote sensing satellites with tie constraints.

When some sub-images lack ground control points (GCPs) or GCPs are not evenly distributed, the estimated camera parameters are often deviated in in-orbit geometric calibration. In this study, a feasible in-orbit geometric calibration method for multi-linear array optical remote sensing satellites with tie constraints is presented. In the presented method, both GCPs and tie points are employed. With the help of tie constraints provided by tie points, all charge coupled devices (CCDs) are logically connected into a complete CCD. The internal camera parameters of all CCDs can then be simultaneous

A glial cell-derived pathway directs regenerating optic nerve axons toward the optic chiasm.

After optic nerve injury, several retinal ganglion cell (RGC) intrinsic signaling pathways have been shown to enhance RGC survival and RGC axonal growth. In contrast, few extrinsic cues have been identified that guide regenerating RGC axons toward and across the optic chiasm. Here, we use live-cell imaging in larval zebrafish to show that regrowing RGC axons initiate growth toward the midline and extend along a trajectory similar to their original projection. From a candidate genetic screen, we identify the glycosyltransferase Lh3 (also referred to as Plod3) to be required to direct regrowing

Optimization of optical systems for low Earth orbit satellites observation under strong background radiation conditions.

Strong sky background radiation and the angular motion of satellites are the key challenges that limit the daytime observations of low-orbit Earth satellites. To enhance the capability of satellite observation, a theoretical method for optimizing the optical system is proposed in this study. Firstly, the degradation of the satellite optical signal due to angular motion is characterized by an effective magnitude based on the theory of satellite photometric characteristics. Then, the analytical relationship of the satellite observation signal-to-noise ratio with exposure time is derived. Meanwhi

The effect of near work on the anterior eye and associations with myopia: a narrative review.

The global prevalence of myopia has increased significantly in recent decades, and it is anticipated that half the population of the world will be myopic by 2050. The dramatic increase in myopia cannot be explained solely by genetic factors; hence, environmental factors such as near work may play an important role in myopia development. Near work activities involve accommodation, convergence, and pupil constriction, which lead to various mechanical changes that alter the structural and optical properties of the anterior eye. Mechanical changes associated with near work activities include cilia

A sellar-suprasellar malignant optic pathway glioblastoma in the absence of prior radiation therapy: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: To date, only a few cases of sellar and suprasellar glioblastomas have been reported even though high-grade glioma constitutes the most common adult brain tumor, commonly arising in the cerebral hemispheres. It arises de novo from astrocytes within the optic nerve, optic chiasm, or optic tracts and is quite challenging to diagnose and treat. To the authors' knowledge, there are 72 cases (including this one) of optic glioma malignancies in the medical literature, 30 corresponding to glioblastomas. OBSERVATIONS: The authors present the diagnostic considerations and challenges, manag

Optical coherence tomography: implications for neurology.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article explores the role of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in neurology practice, particularly in diagnosing and monitoring conditions such as papilledema, optic neuritis, and retinal artery occlusion. OCT has been increasingly utilized as a noninvasive and effective tool for detecting and monitoring neuroaxonal damage in the visual pathway, which is important for early intervention and improved patient outcomes across a variety of neurologic conditions. RECENT FINDINGS: OCT as an imaging modality continues to demonstrate its utility in quantifying optic nerve and

Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy: Severe vascular pathology in a severe primary mutation.

The purpose of the present article was to evaluate the previously unreported vascular alterations in Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON) 3460 mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutation. Among the three primary mtDNA mutations, namely 11778, 14484, and 3460, LHON 3460 is the most rare and historically recognized as having the poorest visual prognosis. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a novel imaging modaility providing high-resolution microcirculation maps and enhancing visualization of the optic disc and peripapillary capillary beds. We herein exploit the advantages of OCTA, f

Unraveling the Enigma of Nonarteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy.

Non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAON) is the second most common optic neuropathy in adults. Despite extensive study, the etiology of NAION is not definitively known. The best evidence suggests that NAION is caused by an infarction in the region of the optic nerve head (ONH), which is perfused by paraoptic short posterior ciliary arteries (sPCAs) and their branches. To examine the gaps in knowledge that defies our understanding of NAION, a historical review was performed both of anatomical investigations of the ONH and its relevant blood vessels and the evolution of clinical u

Changes in Corneal Keratocytes and Collagen Fibrils as an Indicator of Keratoconus Onset: A Preliminary Study Based on OCT Subchannel Images.

BACKGROUND: Keratoconus (KC) is a corneal disease that causes changes in corneal topography, leading to central/paracentral cone formation, which affects visual acuity. METHODS: We studied in vivo optical coherence tomography (OCT) images of normal and KC corneas images. The relative cellular and collagen content in the control and KC human corneas was measured by collecting OCT images and then dividing the images into low (green), medium (blue), and high pixel intensity (red) subchannel images. The green image was used to evaluate the cellular content in the cornea, the blue image presented

On-chip large-scale all-optical interconnect for ultra-low-latency deep neural network inference.

As artificial intelligence models continue to expand rapidly and evolve at an accelerating pace, the sustainability of scaling law faces challenges as computational resources cannot expand indefinitely. A more promising strategy is to use high-performance interconnections to compose multiple modest-capacity computing chips into a high-efficiency system, enabling comparable capability to that of much larger resource-intensive systems. However, an effective on-chip communication and network that provides high bandwidth, low latency, and large-scale parallelism to accelerate distributed computati

Freeform holographic curved-waveguide retinal projection near-eye display.

Augmented reality (AR) displays face persistent challenges in a wide field of view (FOV) and a large depth of field (DOF), while conventional planar waveguide systems suffer from poor ergonomic compatibility and lack diopter correction capability. To address these limitations, we propose a curved-waveguide retinal projection display (CW-RPD) system using freeform optics and freeform holographic optical elements (FHOEs). An ergonomically designed cylindrical curved waveguide (CW) serves as the optical combiner and, together with retinal projection, enables a wide FOV and an extended DOF in a co
