We present the case of a 14-year-old boy who had secondary hyperkalemic periodic paralysis caused by Gordon's syndrome. This syndrome consists of hypertension, tubular acidosis, and hyperkalemia with normal glomerular filtration rate. The pathophysiological mechanism is still unknown. Pathophysiological studies suggest that in this disorder the kidney lacks sensitivity to atrial natriuretic peptide. After treatment with hydrochlorothiazide, serum potassium and plasma aldosterone values, plasma renin activity, and blood pressure became normal and the attacks of periodic paralysis disappeared.

Fifty-four patients treated with daunorubicin, cytosine arabinoside and thioquanine for acute myeloid leukemia were randomly assigned to receive oral lithium carbonate 1200 mg daily or no lithium. This paper examines official published statistics for various causes of death in the United Kingdom between 1970 and 1985. The variables selected were mainly those that had been linked to alcohol or cigarette use. In particular, changes in mortality due to acute myocardial infarction, cancer of trachea, bronchus and lung, cirrhosis of the liver and 'alcoholism' were found to be associated with each other. We report about 58 ultrasonographically guided transcervical chorionic villus biopsies from January 1985 to November 1987. Maternal age greater than 35 years (n = 28), followed by trisomy 21 or 18 (n = 10) were the mean indications. Biochemically evaluation of storage diseases (n = 6) and genomically DNA-analysis because of phenylketonuria (n = 2) were combined in each case with cytogenetic diagnosis. In the other cases certain indications were the reasons for biopsy. In 52 of 58 cases we were successful in biopsies and diagnoses. In the other 6 biopsy specimen we didn't found chorionic villi.

During normal growth in CBA/J mice, the volume of dorsal and ventral cochlear nuclei change very little between 1 and 3 days of age; then more than double between 6 and 12 days of age. Dietary restriction was imposed on CBA/J mice, animals which develop presbyacusis late in their lives. Animals restricted for their whole lives, as well as those restricted after midlife, had less presbyacusis than did control mice fed ad libitum. Dietary restriction did not increase the life spans of these mice. Restriction until midlife did not protect from presbyacusis, nor did it increase life span. In this genotype, dietary restriction protects against hearing loss only if it occurs at the age of most rapid decline of cochlear function.

Pharmacokinetic and clinical studies of ceftizoxime (CZX) in the perinatal period gave the following results: 1. The study of 414 measles cases, admitted in several childrens' hospitals in the Lyons area, underlines the important cost of this disease.
