OBJECTIVE: To analyze male and female sex differentiation in monozygotic twins.
DESIGN: Retrospective study.
SETTING: Multiple academic centers.
PATIENT(S): A pair of monozygotic twins.
INTERVENTION(S): Skin and blood samples were obtained for DNA analysis and karyotyping.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Mutation within the SRY gene was analyzed by the polymerase chain reaction-single-stranded conformation polymorphism test. Monozygosity was ascertained by short tandem repeat analysis. Karyotypes were studied in blood and skin fibroblasts.

Antioxidant enzymes together with trace elements in 26 patients with chronic renal failure treated with hemodialysis and 25 healthy subjects were investigated. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx) in plasma and erythrocytes were examined immediately before and after hemodialysis. PATIENTS AND METHOD: 17 patients (8 female, 9 male; age 8.2 +/- 3.7 years) with phenylketonuria under phenylalanin restricted diet were investigated prior to and after 3 months of selenium substitution (sodium selenite, 115 micrograms Se/m2 BSA/d). Different parameters in blood were determined: selenium, glutathione peroxidase (Gpx) activity, thyroid hormones, blood cell count, lymphocytic antigen expression, muscle function and -enzymes, cardiac ultrasound.

The effects of some parasitic infection (bilharziasis, toxocariasis and trichinosis) on the brain of experimentally infected mice were investigated. Eighty animals were classified into four groups, group I contained five non infected animals as a control group. We have determined the incidence of autoimmune thyroid disorders in patients with Addison's disease. The material comprised 212 patients, 128 women and 84 men, aged 9-74 years. In 58 patients tuberculosis and in six patients other adrenal disorders were diagnosed. In the remaining 148 patients the auto-immune mechanism was the most probable cause of adrenocrotical insufficiency. The trace element status (copper, iron, zinc, manganese, chromium, and selenium) of 20 dietetically treated phenylketonuric (PKU) children was assessed.
