Dissolving microneedle array size influences physical adjuvanticity for dose-sparing vaccination.

Dissolving microneedles (DMNs) are an emerging biomaterial platform for transdermal vaccination, enabling precise antigen delivery into antigen-presenting cell-rich skin layers. Here, we identify a previously underappreciated size dependent immunomodulatory biomaterial function of DMNs: their ability to act as physical adjuvants through controlled tissue micro-injury. Microneedle insertion generates spatially distributed and transient skin micro-injury that induces the release of damage-associated molecular patterns, prominently high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB-1), thereby establishing a locali

Enhancement of LTE and NR systems through efficient physical cell identity allocation.

As mobile communication systems continue to evolve to support higher data rates, ultra-low latency, and greater reliability, the effective management of Physical Cell Identities (PCI) becomes increasingly important. The pool of available identifiers is limited-504 in fourth-generation networks and 1008 in fifth-generation networks-so reuse of these identities is unavoidable. Improper reuse can lead to collisions and confusion, resulting in interference, failed handovers, and reduced network throughput. This work addresses these challenges by exploring advanced automated techniques for optimizi

Effects of carbon dioxide on physical and cognitive performance in a simulated spacesuit contingency scenario.

Crewmembers on future Lunar and Mars surface missions will perform numerous surface exploration extravehicular activities (EVAs). NASA standards dictate a nominal upper limit to the inspired partial pressure of CO2 (PICO2) of 15 mmHg in spacesuits; however, there is no suited PICO2 standard for emergency or contingency EVA scenarios. A laboratory-based study was conducted to characterize physical and cognitive performance, and self-reported symptomology during a simulated emergency one-hour EVA return to habitat scenario while being exposed to different PICO2 levels. Fifteen healthy subjects (

Barriers and Facilitators to Physical Activity for Rural and Remote Children and Youth: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Engagement in regular physical activity throughout childhood is fundamental to physiological development and prevention of chronic disease. Despite strong evidence supporting its benefits, many young Australians fail to achieve recommended physical activity levels, with rural children and youth in particular experiencing challenges to participation. Understanding the reasons for low participation and identifying strategies to enhance engagement within rural communities is critical to equitable health promotion. This scoping review synthesized current literature to identify barriers

Physical and biological fate of protozoan (oo)cysts in slow sand filtration: A review.

Cryptosporidium is a leading cause of waterborne disease globally, in part due to its chlorine-resistant oocysts, low infectious dose, and ability to cause widespread outbreaks. Multiple barriers are employed in drinking water treatment to reduce risks from Cryptosporidium and other pathogens. Slow sand filtration (SSF), a low-carbon drinking water treatment system, has widely varying log removal values (LRVs) (0.09 to >7.2-log; median 2.64-log across published studies). This has been attributed to filter maturity, sand grain size, filter depth, and hydraulic loading rates. Additional enhancem

Regulation of autophagy-mediated pathways by diet, physical activity, and sleep in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive, age-related, neurodegenerative disorder marked by cognitive decline, memory loss, and accumulation of amyloid beta (Aβ) plaques and tau tangles. A key feature of AD is impaired protein homeostasis, often driven by autophagy dysfunction. Autophagy, a cellular degradation and recycling process, plays a vital role in maintaining neuronal health and is increasingly recognized as a therapeutic target in AD. Lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity, and sleep can positively influence autophagy and support cognitive function. Intermittent fasting (I

Impact of Iron (II) Chloride Treatment on the Physical and Metabolic Changes in Mungbean Sprouts.

Legume crops are rich in carbohydrates, proteins, and various secondary metabolites such as isoflavones. Micronutrient treatments regulate plant biological activities, including stomatal function, hormone balance, and antioxidant accumulation, thereby improving resistance to environmental stress. This study investigated the effect of FeCl2 treatment, which changed the seed coat color, on the physical and biochemical characteristics of mungbean sprouts. After 72 h of cultivation with FeCl2 (Fe-72 h), no significant differences in physical traits were observed compared with the control. However,

Psychosocial mediators of a physical activity and dietary intervention in pregnant women with overweight or obesity.

BACKGROUND: Mediation analyses provide insight into both ‘pieces’ of the mediation chain; they allow us to look into the ‘black box’ that is behavior change. They allow researchers to better understand the ‘how’ of an intervention’s effects and/or the ‘why’ behind why an intervention worked or did not work. The lack of publications in pregnant populations highlights the need for additional studies to be conducted and published. The purpose of this study is to examine the psychosocial mediators of physical activity and dietary outcomes in a sample of pregnant women with overweight or obesity pa

Understanding Physical Activity Demands and Reported Perceptions of Fatigue in Children with Developmental Disabilities.

Children with developmental disabilities are less physically active and at increased risk for chronic conditions that physical activity might ameliorate. This study examined the relationships between the impact of physical activity (e.g., muscles burning, body tiredness), physical activity time and fatigue in children with Cerebral Palsy (CP) and Down Syndrome (DS) in comparison to typically developing (TD) children. A convenience sample of children and parents was enrolled. All children were between 4 and 10 years, ambulatory, medically stable, not taking sleep-aid medications and were either

ACR Appropriateness Criteria® Suspected Physical Abuse-Child: Update 2025.

For suspected physical abuse in infants and toddlers (<24 months), a radiographic skeletal survey and noncontrast head CT are usually appropriate first-line imaging, even if no injuries are apparent. These studies often reveal occult fractures or intracranial hemorrhages. For children >24 months without neurologic or visceral signs of injury, imaging is more targeted: radiographs of areas of concern are obtained, and skeletal surveys are used selectively, reflecting the lower yield of occult injuries in this older group. Neurologic symptoms or signs of head trauma warrant immediate neuroimagin

Preliminary development of a child physical abuse algorithm using emergency department records.

BACKGROUND: Victims of child physical abuse (CPA) disproportionately use the emergency department, yet identifying CPA remains challenging in this setting. An urgent need to develop tools that aid providers in recognising violence-related injuries in children exists. Developing a CPA predictive algorithm could improve identification and clinical familiarity with risk factors. We aimed to develop a CPA predictive algorithm and assess its performance. METHODS: Using data from May 2017 to March 2022 involving patients aged 0-17 years treated at a large paediatric hospital in Connecticut, we used
