Potential of Limosilactobacillus reuteri in modulating neuroplasticity and ameliorating behavioral deficits in a maternal separation rat model of autism.

Limosilactobacillus reuteri has attracted attention for its potential to modulate the gut-brain axis. This study investigates whether L. reuteri administration mitigates autism-related abnormalities in a maternal separation rat model of autism. Male Wistar rats were divided into maternal-separated L. reuteri-treated (MS+LR), maternal-separated placebo-treated (MS), and non-separated control groups. Behavioral assessments evaluated autism-related behaviors, including social interaction, repetitive behavior, anxiety, and hyperactivity. Immunohistochemical analysis of the hypothalamus assessed ox

Exploring the role of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for the treatment of fibromyalgia: a narrative review.

INTRODUCTION: Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain syndrome characterized by widespread nociplastic pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and mood symptoms. Conventional treatments often yield limited benefits, prompting interest in noninvasive brain stimulation techniques such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). AREAS COVERED: This review synthesizes evidence from 31 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of tDCS in fibromyalgia. A systematic search of Embase and Medline were conducted without date or language restrictions. Most studies as

Increased default mode network activation in depression and social anxiety during upward social comparison.

Social comparisons are a core feature of human life. Theories posit that social comparisons play a critical role in depression and social anxiety triggering negative evaluations about the self, as well as negative emotions. We investigated the neural basis of social comparisons in participants with major depression and/or social anxiety (MD-SA, n = 56) and healthy controls (n = 47) using functional magnetic resonance imaging. While being scanned participants performed a social comparison task, during which they received feedback about their performance and the performance of a coplayer. Upward

Body weight moderates the benefits of physical exercise on brain health in multiple sclerosis: An MR volumetric and spectroscopy study.

BACKGROUND: There is limited information regarding exercise training and brain health in people with multiple sclerosis (MS). This study investigated body weight as a moderator of exercise training effects on CNS volume and metabolism. METHODS: Sixty people with MS were randomly selected (based on sex and weight classification) and allocated into exercise training (n = 30) or control (n = 30) conditions considering weight classification (normal weight vs. overweight/obese). The exercise training program consisted of 6 months of home-based exercise. Whole brain and regions-of-interest (ROI) vo

Multisensory flicker modulates widespread brain networks and reduces interictal epileptiform discharges.

Modulating brain oscillations has strong therapeutic potential. Interventions that both non-invasively modulate deep brain structures and are practical for chronic daily home use are desirable for a variety of therapeutic applications. Repetitive audio-visual stimulation, or sensory flicker, is an accessible approach that modulates hippocampus in mice, but its effects in humans are poorly defined. We therefore quantified the neurophysiological effects of flicker with high spatiotemporal resolution in patients with focal epilepsy who underwent intracranial seizure monitoring. In this interventi

Gray matter correlates of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in boys versus girls with sensory processing dysfunction.

Neuroimaging shows volumetric alterations of gray matter in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); however, results are conflicting. This may be due to heterogeneous phenotypic sampling and limited sensitivity of volumetric analysis. Creating more homogenous cohorts and investigating gray matter microstructure may yield meaningful biomarkers for scientific and clinical applications. Children with sensory processing dysfunction (SPD) have differences in white matter microstructure, but not gray matter volumetric differences. Approximately 40% of SPD children meet research criteria for

Default mode network scaffolds immature frontoparietal network in cognitive development.

The default mode network (DMN) is a workspace for convergence of internal and external information. The frontal parietal network (FPN) is indispensable to executive functioning. Yet, how they interplay to support cognitive development remains elusive. Using longitudinal developmental fMRI with an n-back paradigm, we show a heterogeneity of maturational changes in multivoxel activity and network connectivity among DMN and FPN nodes in 528 children and 103 young adults. Compared with adults, children exhibited prominent longitudinal improvement but still inferior behavioral performance, which pa

TREM2 gene expression associations with Alzheimer's disease neuropathology are region-specific: implications for cortical versus subcortical microglia.

Previous post-mortem assessments of TREM2 expression and its association with brain pathologies have been limited by sample size. This study sought to correlate region-specific TREM2 mRNA expression with diverse neuropathological measures at autopsy using a large sample size (N = 945) of bulk RNA sequencing data from the Religious Orders Study and Rush Memory and Aging Project (ROS/MAP). TREM2 gene expression of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, posterior cingulate cortex, and caudate nucleus was assessed with respect to core pathology of Alzheimer's disease (amyloid-β, and tau), cerebrovasc

Major gender differences in relations between life stressor frequency and gray matter in adolescence and emerging adulthood.

Adolescence and emerging adulthood is likely a sensitive period for the neural effects of stress due to increasing life stress, onset of stress-related disorders, and continued gray matter (GM) development. In adults, stress is associated with GM differences in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), hippocampus, and amygdala, but little is known about these relations, and whether they differ by gender, during adolescence and emerging adulthood. Further, it is unknown whether dependent (self-generated) and independent (fateful) stressors have distinct associations with GM, as each have distinct r

Vitamin D and diabetes.

OBJECTIVES: Emerging evidence associates chronic pain syndrome, such as fibromyalgia, with endogenous pain modulatory system dysfunction, leading to an impaired descending pain inhibition. In this study, using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we aimed at seeking possible functional connectivity changes of the periaqueductal gray (PAG), a brainstem area that belongs to the endogenous pain modulatory system, in patients with fibromyalgia. METHODS: In 20 patients with fibromyalgia and 15 healthy subjects, we investigated PAG functional connectivity using resting-state

Alterations in Retrotransposition, Synaptic Connectivity, and Myelination Implicated by Transcriptomic Changes Following Maternal Immune Activation in Nonhuman Primates.

BACKGROUND: Maternal immune activation (MIA) is a proposed risk factor for multiple neuropsychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia. However, the molecular mechanisms through which MIA imparts risk remain poorly understood. A recently developed nonhuman primate model of exposure to the viral mimic poly:ICLC during pregnancy shows abnormal social and repetitive behaviors and elevated striatal dopamine, a molecular hallmark of human psychosis, providing an unprecedented opportunity for studying underlying molecular correlates. METHODS: We performed RNA sequencing across psychiatrically rele

Ancestral Stress Alters Lifetime Mental Health Trajectories and Cortical Neuromorphology via Epigenetic Regulation.

Experiences during early development are powerful determinants of lifetime mental health. Here we investigated if ancestral stress regulates the brain's epigenetic memory to alter neuromorphology and emotionality in the remote F4 progeny. Pregnant female rat dams of the parental F0 generation were exposed to stress on gestational days 12-18. To generate a transgenerational stress lineage, their pregnant daughters (F1), grand-daughters (F2) and great-grand-daughters (F3) remained undisturbed. To generate a multigenerational stress lineage, pregnant dams of each generation (F1-F3) were stressed.

Eye-gaze processing in the broader bipolar phenotype revealed by electrical neuroimaging.

Previous studies have documented atypical brain responses to faces in individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) and in their relatives. In view of previous findings of atypical face processing in youths at risk for BD, the aim of this study was to examine whether BD patients and offspring would show differential activation in networks of the social brain when processing eye-gaze. Data from 18 euthymic BD patients and 18 offspring, as well as 36 age-matched healthy controls, were collected using a delayed face-matching paradigm, event related potentials and electrical neuroimaging methods. Altered Functional Connectivity within Default Mode Network in Patients with Transient Ischemic Attack: A Resting-State Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study.

Default mode network (DMN) is an important functional brain network that supports aspects of cognition. Stroke has been reported to be associated with functional connectivity (FC) impairments within DMN. However, whether FC within DMN changes in transient ischemic attack (TIA), an important risk factor for stroke, remains unclear. Forty-eight TIA patients and 41 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HCs) were recruited in this study. Using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging seed-based FC methods, we examined FC alterations within DMN in TIA patients, tested its associations w

Self-injuring adolescent girls exhibit insular cortex volumetric abnormalities that are similar to those seen in adults with borderline personality disorder.

Self-inflicted injury (SII) in adolescence is a serious public health concern that portends prospective vulnerability to internalizing and externalizing psychopathology, borderline personality development, suicide attempts, and suicide. To date, however, our understanding of neurobiological vulnerabilities to SII is limited. Behaviorally, affect dysregulation is common among those who self-injure. This suggests ineffective cortical modulation of emotion, as observed among adults with borderline personality disorder. In borderline samples, structural and functional abnormalities are observed in

GABAergic neurons in the olfactory cortex projecting to the lateral hypothalamus in mice.

Olfaction guides goal-directed behaviours including feeding. To investigate how central olfactory neural circuits control feeding behaviour in mice, we performed retrograde tracing from the lateral hypothalamus (LH), an important feeding centre. We observed a cluster of retrogradely labelled cells distributed in the posteroventral region of the olfactory peduncle. Histochemical analyses revealed that the majority of these retrogradely labelled projection neurons expressed glutamic acid decarboxylase 65/67 (GAD65/67), but not vesicular glutamate transporter 1 (VGluT1). We named this region cont

Theory of Mind Skills Are Related to Resting-State Frontolimbic Connectivity in Schizophrenia.

Patients with schizophrenia (SCH) often demonstrate impairment in social-cognitive functions as well as disturbances in large-scale network connectivity. The ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) is a core region of the default mode network, with projections to limbic structures. It plays an important role in social and emotional decision-making. We investigated whether resting-state functional connectivity (FC) relates to the cognitive and affective domains of theory of mind (ToM). Twenty-three SCH patients and 19 healthy controls (HCs) underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance i

Altered Resting State Effective Connectivity of Anterior Insula in Depression.

Depression has been associated with changes in both functional and effective connectivity of large scale brain networks, including the default mode network, executive network, and salience network. However, studies of effective connectivity by means of spectral dynamic causal modeling (spDCM) are still rare and the interaction between the different resting state networks has not been investigated in detail. Thus, we aimed at exploring differences in effective connectivity among eight right hemisphere brain areas-anterior insula, inferior frontal gyrus, middle frontal gyrus (MFG), frontal eye f
