Afterbirth support provision for women following a traumatic/distressing birth: Survey of NHS hospital trusts in England.

OBJECTIVE: Despite recommendations within postnatal care guidelines, many National Health Service (NHS) hospital trusts in the UK provide an afterbirth, debriefing type service for women who have had a traumatic/distressing birth. Currently there are a lack of insights into what, how, and when this support is provided. The aim of this study was to explore afterbirth provision for women who have had a traumatic/distressing birth in NHS hospital trusts in England. DESIGN: An online survey comprising forced choice and open text comments was disseminated via direct email and social media to NHS h

From stigma to support: the mediating role of sympathy between nurses' perceived stigma and helping behavior tendency for alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: The detrimental effect of stigma on healthcare for individuals with alcohol use disorders (AUDs) is well-established, often resulting in social distance and diminished helping behavior tendencies. However, contemporary neuroscience reconceptualizes addiction as a brain disease, potentially altering emotional responses to stigma. This study examines a seemingly paradoxical possibility: that under specific conditions, perceived stigma is primarily associated with sympathy (rather than anger or fear), which in turn is linked to helping behavior tendencies among nurses. METHODS: A cro

Postgraduate Medical Education in Arthroplasty: Between Ambition and Reality.

INTRODUCTION: The number of arthroplasty procedures on hip and knee joints is expected to continue to rise in the coming years. At the same time, postgraduate training in arthroplasty faces significant structural challenges in German-speaking countries. This study aimed to assess the current state of postgraduate clinical training, the role of external education offered by the German Society of Arthroplasty (AE), and the ways in which young physicians can access AE-YOUTH (the AE's youth organisation). METHODOLOGY: An online survey was distributed to members of AE-YOUTH. The structured questio

Perceptual Evaluation of Voice and Parental Reports of Vocal Behaviors in Primary School Children in Chennai, India: A Cross-Sectional Observational Study.

INTRODUCTION: The human voice plays a pivotal role in communication, influencing social interactions and overall development. Voice disorders among children, ranging from 6% to 9%, can hinder communication, academic, and social performance. Despite the prevalence, limited research examines parental observations alongside professional evaluations. This study bridges this gap, integrating parental perspectives with speech-language pathologist (SLP) assessments to provide a comprehensive understanding of children's vocal health. AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY: The aim of the study was to invest

TlyC, a conserved hemolysin in Rickettsia, contributes to spotted fever pathogenesis in mice.

UNLABELLED: Rickettsia circulates between mammalian hosts and hematophagous arthropod vectors by exploiting their intracellular environment. With advances in rickettsial genetic tools, recent studies have identified novel molecular mechanisms involved in Rickettsia-host-vector interactions. However, a significant knowledge gap exists in understanding how Rickettsia modulates its virulence functions to survive in two drastically different environments (mammalian hosts vs arthropod vectors). Bacterial hemolysins play a crucial role in neutralizing innate immune functions through pore-forming act

Fat embolism: a systematic review to facilitate the development of standardised procedures in pathology.

Fat embolism (FE) is a historically recognised but still actively researched topic in forensic pathology. Several aspects remain not fully elucidated, such as its aetiopathogenesis, its causal role in death determination, the impact of interfering factors (e.g. cardiopulmonary resuscitation or other medical procedures) and both qualitative and quantitative diagnostic methodologies in clinical and forensic contexts. These issues are further underscored by the potential involvement of FE in the causal determination of non-traumatic deaths, which often raises questions of professional liability.

A novel approach to frontline health worker support: a case study in increasing social power among private, fee-for-service birthing attendants in rural Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Expanding the health workforce to increase the availability of skilled birth attendants (SBAs) presents an opportunity to expand the power and well-being of frontline health workers. The role of the SBA holds enormous potential to transform the relationship between women, birthing caregivers, and the broader health care delivery system. This paper will present a novel approach to the community-based skilled birth attendant (SBA) role, the Skilled Health Entrepreneur (SHE) program implemented in rural Sylhet District, Bangladesh. CASE PRESENTATION: The SHE model developed a public-

Behavioral health outcomes and social determinants of health in children with diabetes and juvenile arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Children with chronic illnesses, including arthritis, are at increased risk for adverse psychosocial outcomes influenced by social determinants of health (SDOH). Comparing psychosocial outcomes in families affected by juvenile arthritis compared to other chronic illnesses may help identify areas in need of special attention vs areas that may be addressed through adopting other disease examples' care models. We examined child and parent behavioral health outcomes for families with juvenile arthritis compared to diabetes, accounting for SDOH. METHODS: Secondary data analysis of the N

Exploring factors influencing chiropractors' adherence to radiographic guidelines for low back pain using the Theoretical Domains Framework.

BACKGROUND: The inappropriate use of lumbar spine imaging remains common in primary care despite recommendations from evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to avoid imaging in the absence of red flags. This study aimed to explore factors influencing ordering behaviours and adherence to radiographic guidelines for low back pain (LBP) in chiropractors in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL), Canada. METHODS: We conducted two focus groups in December 2018 with chiropractors in different regions of NL (eastern, n = 8; western, n = 4). An interview guide based on the Theoretical Domains Framework

Effects of Trunk Motion, Touch, and Articulation on Upper-Limb Velocities and on Joint Contribution to Endpoint Velocities During the Production of Loud Piano Tones.

Piano performance involves several levels of motor abundancy. Identification of kinematic strategies that enhance performance and reduce risks of practice-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMD) represents an important research topic since more than half of professional pianists might suffer from PRMD during their career. Studies in biomechanics have highlighted the benefits of using proximal upper-limb joints to reduce the load on distal segments by effectively creating velocity and force at the finger-key interaction. If scientific research has documented postural and expressive features of

Self-reported tobacco smoking practices among medical students and their perceptions towards training about tobacco smoking in medical curricula: A cross-sectional, questionnaire survey in Malaysia, India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco smoking issues in developing countries are usually taught non-systematically as and when the topic arose. The World Health Organisation and Global Health Professional Student Survey (GHPSS) have suggested introducing a separate integrated tobacco module into medical school curricula. Our aim was to assess medical students' tobacco smoking habits, their practices towards patients' smoking habits and attitude towards teaching about smoking in medical schools. METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was carried out among final year undergraduate medical students in Ma

Neurotoxic effects of aluminium among foundry workers and Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: In a cross-sectional case-control study conducted in northern Italy, 64 former aluminium dust-exposed workers were compared with 32 unexposed controls from other companies matched for age, professional training, economic status, educational and clinical features. The findings lead the authors to suggest a possible role of the inhalation of aluminium dust in pre-clinical mild cognitive disorder which might prelude Alzheimer's disease (AD) or AD-like neurological deterioration. METHODS: The investigation involved a standardised occupational and medical history with particular attent

Organ Wet Mount (Squash) Preparations in Fish Pathology: An Underused, Rapid and Low-Cost Tool for Tissue-Level Diagnosis During Necropsy.

Rapid, practical diagnostic approaches are essential for effective fish health management, yet cytological wet mount assessment of internal organs remains underused and inconsistently described in peer-reviewed aquatic veterinary literature. Organ wet mount (squash preparation) cytology offers a simple, low-cost method for immediate evaluation of fresh tissues. Unlike impression smears and aspirates, in which cells are assessed largely in isolation, squash preparations retain structural relationships within the tissue, providing tissue-level information at the point of examination that would o

Multiple paths to privatisation in healthcare? Comparing England and Italy beyond the public-private divide.

English and Italian national health systems are predominantly funded by general taxation and treat patients primarily free at the point of delivery. Both healthcare systems are facing increasing financial pressures given population ageing, the rise in chronic and non-communicable diseases, and fiscal restraint. In recent years, pressures on public healthcare have revived debate around the role of the private sector, but discussion is mired in a lack of conceptual clarity. We seek to bring greater analytical order by distinguishing seven distinct 'trajectories of privatisation', each reflecting

Research Nurse Roles and Functions in Clinical Trials for Assisted Reproductive Drugs.

Assisted reproductive drug clinical trials require close coordination between reproductive medicine, nursing, embryology, pharmacy, laboratory, data management, and regulatory teams. Their implementation is complicated by cycle-dependent treatment schedules, frequent endocrine and ultrasound monitoring, strict medication timing, reproductive specimen handling, pregnancy follow-up, and safety reporting. These features create specific demands for clinical research nurses (CRNs), whose responsibilities extend beyond routine nursing care. This review summarizes the roles and functions of CRNs in a
