[West African tick-borne relapsing fever, a neglected disease of major public health importance in Senegal].

INTRODUCTION: Tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) is a zoonotic disease caused by various species of Borrelia that are transmitted to humans worldwide through the bite of soft ticks belonging to the genus Ornithodoros. In Senegal, as in other endemic regions of West Africa, cases of TBRF caused by B. crocidurae and transmitted by Ornithodoros sonrai ticks are underdiagnosed. The disease is not well known among doctors, nurses, or the general population. In some regions, TBRF is the leading cause of vector-borne fever, surpassing malaria. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This narrative and systematic revi

Global burden of MDR-TB and XDR-TB: trends, inequities, and future implications for public health planning.

BACKGROUND: Drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health threat, reflecting disparities in healthcare capacity, access, and socioeconomic development. Previous research often lacks geographic breadth. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of the global, regional, and national burden of Multidrug-resistant TB without extensive drug resistance (MDR-TB) and extensively drug-resistant TB(XDR-TB) from in Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2021 Study 1990 to 2021, with a focus on distributional inequities. The findings aim to guide resource prioritization, inform targete

Prevalence and molecular insights of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis in Sudanese Cattle: implications for control and public health.

Paratuberculosis (PTB) is a chronic intestinal disease affecting ruminants and somenon-ruminants, caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP). In the Sudan, published data on the incidence and prevalence of PTB are Limited. we detected MAP in human patients with gastrointestinal complaints highlights its zoonotic potential and raises public health concerns. This study aimed at assessing PTB prevalence in cattle and identifying risk factors for MAP infection as well as investigating the phylogeny of MAP circulating in the Sudan. Both serum and faecal samples were collected from

Seasonal and environmental drivers of antibiotic resistance and virulence in Escherichia coli from aquaculture and their public health implications.

Aquaculture is increasingly impacted by environmental stressors such as temperature and pH fluctuations, which influence the proliferation and antibiotic resistance of Escherichia coli (E. coli). This study investigates the effects of these factors on the prevalence, virulence, and antibiotic resistance of E. coli isolated from aquaculture environments in Egypt, with a focus on public health implications. A total of 328 Oreochromis niloticus (Nile tilapia) samples were collected from Egyptian fish farms over five sampling periods, representing different seasonal conditions. E. coli was isolate

Epidemiological disparities in pulmonary sarcoidosis between public and private healthcare sectors in haute-Garonne department (France).

INTRODUCTION: Sarcoidosis is a multisystem granulomatous disorder that affects mediastinal and pulmonary structures in nearly 90% of cases. Given the high prevalence of respiratory involvement, pulmonologists are crucial in managing the disease, from diagnosis through to follow-up. In France, epidemiological data on sarcoidosis are limited, despite notable regional and international variations in the incidence and prevalence of the disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The SARCOPIDEMIO study is a prospective, multicenter observational study designed to estimate the incidence and prevalence of pulmo

[Surveillance and public health at the borders: an analysis of immediate reporting events in Paraná State, Brazil (2010-2019)].

International borders pose health risks due to the intense movement of people and products, requiring surveillance and specific public health interventions. In Brazil, territorial diversity accentuates these challenges. The aim of the present study was to analyze the pattern of the mandatory immediate reporting of public health events in border regions of Brazil and more specifically in the state of Paraná from 2010 to 2019. Fourteen events from the National List of Compulsory Notification of Diseases that require immediate reporting to the three levels of government were analyzed using data f

Integrated environmental and health economic assessments of novel xeno-keratografts addressing a growing public health crisis.

Tissue scarcity poses global challenges for corneal transplantation and public health. Xeno-keratoplasty using animal-derived tissues offers a potential solution, but its environmental and economic implications remain unclear. This study evaluated two xeno-keratoplasty procedures at a single institution: (1) native corneas (Option 1) and (2) tissue-engineered corneal scaffolds derived from slaughterhouse waste (Option 2). Life cycle assessment (LCA) quantified environmental impacts across 18 midpoint indicators, while cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA) incorporated cost and environmental impact

OBJECTIVES: Drinking water containing optimal levels of cariostatic trace elements is an effective preventive approach against community-wide dental caries. This study aimed to (i) determine the concentrations of fluoride, copper, and zinc in commercially packaged and public tap water available in Qatar, (ii) assess the accuracy of the content of these cariostatic trace elements on commercial water brand labels, and (iii) check for seasonal fluctuations in the levels of these trace elements in commercial and public water samples. METHODS: Duplicate samples from 20 commercial and six public ta

Survival Rate of Metal Crowns Covered by Public Health Insurance System in Japan: A Quality-of-Care Perspective.

Rather than focusing solely on cost-effectiveness and accessibility, it is also important to assess the quality of treatments available under Japan's Public Health Insurance System (PHIS). The purpose of this retrospective study was to assess the survival rate of metal crowns used to replace first molars in a clinical setting. Only metal crowns made of 12% gold-silver-palladium alloy placed on first molars and available under the PHIS were included. The endpoint was removal/separation of a crown or extraction of the tooth. A total of 603 crowns fitted at 20 dental offices were investigated. Du

Nematodes of concern to public and animal health associated with the invasive snail Achatina fulica, in Sergipe, Northeastern Brazil.

The giant African land snail Achatina fulica is known to be the intermediate host of a number of nematode species that are prejudicial to human and veterinary health, being also an agricultural and urban pest. The present study investigated the presence of nematodes in A. fulica and other terrestrial mollusks in 24 municipalities of Sergipe State, northeastern of Brazil, in the dry and rainy seasons. In 2019 and 2020, the specimens were collected in standard 20 m × 10 m plots (10 min/01 collector), while in 2021, they were collected by convenience sampling. The nematode species were identified

Experiences of participant and public involvement in an international randomized controlled trial for people living with dementia and their informal caregivers.

BACKGROUND: This study was initiated and co-designed by a Participant and Public Involvement (PPI) group attached to HOMESIDE, a randomized controlled trial that investigated music and reading interventions for people living with dementia and their family caregivers across five countries: Australia, Germany, Norway, Poland, and the UK. The aim was to capture experiences of PPI across the five countries, explore the benefits and challenges of PPI in dementia research, and identify contributions made to the study. METHODS: We surveyed PPI members and academic researchers who collaborated on the
