Mycobacterium abscessus (M. abscessus) is a ubiquitous, rapidly growing non-tuberculous mycobacterium, which is known to cause life-threatening lung infections in immunocompromised individuals following exposure to contaminated injectable products. We report a case of M. abscessus osteomyelitis of the right wrist in a 28-year-old patient with a history of intravenous drug use and a recent surgical repair of the right radial artery pseudoaneurysm. The patient underwent surgical debridement of the right distal radius infection. Histopathological examination and culture of the debrided tissue rev

The distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) allows supination and pronation of the distal forearm and wrist, an integral motion in everyday human activity. DRUJ injury and chronic instability can be a significant source of morbidity in patients' lives. Although often linked with distal radius fractures, DRUJ injury may occur in a variety of other upper extremity injuries, as well as an isolated pathology. Diagnosis of this injury requires the clinician to have a high index of suspicion and low threshold for clinical testing and further imaging of the DRUJ. The purpose of this article is to provide a re

We present a novel method to estimate the 3D pose and curvature of bendable interventional devices using a single X-ray image. A preliminary experiment was performed to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method. The mean estimation accuracies were 3.48mm and 0.59mm for the 3D pose and the radius of curvature of the bendable cardiac ablation catheter, respectively. This method has the potential to help clinicians to make a better intraoperative decision during the procedure, resulting in expedite surgery and reduce exposure to ionizing radiation.Clinical relevance- This novel method ha

The classic and congruent-arc Latarjet techniques are equally safe and effective in restoring glenohumeral stability, even when performed as a revision of a failed stabilization. The classic technique provides a broader contact area for healing and facilitates and improves screw fixation. The congruent-arc technique theoretically optimizes glenohumeral contact forces because of the matched radius of curvature, provides better restoration of glenoid depth, and restores larger glenoid defects. However, rotating the coracoid graft for the congruent-arc technique eliminates the possibility of imbr

Torus or buckle fractures typically affect children who have suffered indirect minor wrist injuries. They are axial compression-type metaphyseal fractures of cortical and cancellous bone, which are stable and their treatment therefore consists in immobilisation of the joint for three to four weeks. We present an atypical case of distal radius torus fracture in a 19-year-old adult male, which has not been previously reported in adults and can be considered a new type of occult fracture. Knowledge of this possibility is mandatory to be able to make a differential diagnosis of wrist sprain in adu

A 5-month-old girl was presented to us with a right orbital cyst covering a microphthalmic eye, absent digits (thumbs) in both hands, and absence of right radius and left kidney. The hematological profile of the patient was within normal limits. The patient had a family history of leukemia and the chromosomal analysis was suggestive of Fanconi's anemia (FA). The cyst was excised in toto and sent for histopathology. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of an orbital cyst covering a microphthalmic eye in a patient with FA. This case report also stresses the fact that FA ca

The scaphoid is vitally important for the proper mechanics of wrist function. Fracture of the scaphoid bone is the most common carpal fracture. Among all wrist injuries the incidence of scaphoid fracture is second only to fractures of the distal radius. Scaphoid fractures are significant because a delay in diagnosis can lead to a variety of adverse outcomes that include nonunion, delayed union, decreased grips strength, range of motion and osteoarthritis of the radiocarpal joint. To avoid missing this diagnosis, a high index of suspicion and a through history and physical examination are neces

Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic granulomatous disease caused by Rhinosporidium seeberi. It usually occurs in the mucous membranes of nose, nasopharynx, and eyes, and less commonly in extra nasal sites such as skin, bones, genitalia, and even the internal organs. Rhinosporidiosis occurs in the wrist joint with isolated bony involvement is rare. We report one such case in a 50-year-old man who presented with a non-tender, fixed swelling over his anterolateral aspect of left forearm. Radiography and computed tomography showed a lytic destructive lesion involving the distal radius, ulna, carpals, an

A 4.5-year-old intact male Labrador Retriever dog had a 1-month history of right forelimb lameness with painful swelling of the elbow. The radiographic findings of increased synovial mass with mineralized opacities and the gross and histologic findings in the synovial biopsy specimens were consistent with a diagnosis of primary (idiopathic) synovial osteochondromatosis. Twenty months after initial presentation, based on progression of clinical signs and radiographic evidence of marked bone lysis in the distal aspect of the humerus and proximal aspects of the radius and ulna, the affected leg w

It is presented an extremely rare condition characterised by total absence of tibia and fibular dimelia. Only few patients were presented till now. Our patient was observed and treated for 19 years. He was born with normal forearms (radiologically ulna and radius were present), syndactyly of hands, mirror feet and extremely equinus. The knees were normal in flexion and dislocated in extension. Radiologically there was total absent of tibia and duplication of fibula; moreover there was duplication of toes (right foot--9, left foot--10 toes), metatarsal bones, cuneiform, cuboid and calcaneal bon

Focal fibrocartilaginous dysplasia is an uncommon, benign bone lesion that causes deformity of the long bones in young children. It has most commonly been encountered in the proximal tibia, and very rarely in the long bones of the upper limb, that is, the proximal humerus, distal radius, ulna and proximal phalanx. Only one case of focal fibrocartilaginous dysplasia of the proximal humerus has been reported previously. The present study reports two such additional cases that were diagnosed in late childhood. The clinical presentation and radiographic findings are described with an emphasis on t

A 45-year old polytraumatized female patient presented with an ankylosed elbow two years after a traffic accident. A skin graft adherent to the proximal radius was painful and precluded any attempt at total elbow arthroplasty. Local muscular, cutaneous and vascular sequelae contraindicated the usual local regional flaps or made risky elbow coverage with free flaps. The patient's breast hypertrophy, an obstacle to a random-pattern flap on the torso, offered enough tissue to cover the injured elbow with an axial-pattern flap of the left breast lower-outer quadrant. Six months later the patient h

Nine cadaver upper extremities were tested to evaluate the constraint properties of the dorsal and palmar radioulnar ligaments at their foveal and styloid attachments to the ulna. The specimens were tested by anterior and posterior displacement of the radius relative to the ulna with the forearm in pronation, supination, and neutral rotation. There were no statistically significant differences in the relative percent of constraint contribution of the styloid and foveal ligament insertions. In neutral forearm rotation total displacement after sectioning both ligament insertions tended to be lar

INTRODUCTION: This is a report of 2 consecutive cases of the Galeazzi-equivalent fracture in children.
CLINICAL PICTURE: In both cases, the mechanism of injury was falls onto the outstretched hand. Radiographs showed fracture of the radius with separation of the distal ulnar physis.
TREATMENT: Initial treatment by closed manipulation failed; hence, open reduction and internal fixation was required. The cause of failure of closed manipulation in both cases was interposition of soft tissue into the ulnar fracture site.
OUTCOME: Both cases showed good functional outcome after open reduction an

An identical pattern of malformations was found in two brothers both having microcephaly and severe developmental delay. Additionally, they had hypotelorism, epicanthic folds, and convergent strabismus. There was shortening of either the radius or the tibia and shortening of the first metacarpals. Persistently dorsally flexed fingers and toes were noted, all of which are unusually long. Both boys had a high-pitched voice and were unable to communicate verbally at the age of 4.5 years. They both developed short stature. One brother has anal atresia; the other had a pulmonary artery atresia, VSD

Patients with scaphoid nonunion with humpback deformity and collapse of the wrist were treated with palmar wedge bone grafting combined with reduction of the lunate to correct the dorsal intercalated segment instability deformity. Union was obtained at an average of 3 months, and patient satisfaction with functional outcome and pain relief was high. Palmar wedge bone grafting combined with correction of lunate malalignment successfully achieved scaphoid union, restored scaphoid length, and avoided the potential complication of scaphoid malunion. This report revisits a technique that facilitate

The clinical history and diagnosis of a dog with leishmaniasis involving both elbow joints and the skin is described. The dog, a female, five-year-old crossbreed, had been imported from Majorca (Balearic Islands, Spain) four years before the diagnosis was made. For two years, the dog had had bilateral forelimb lameness. Physical examination revealed swollen, painful and crepitating elbow joints. Furthermore, an ulcerating dermatitis was found on the concave surface of the left pinna and necrotising margins on both ears. Radiographs of the elbow joints revealed complete destruction of the joint

Results of treatment for 104 forearm shaft fractures in 70 patients have been presented. In all cases included in this study an open reduction of the fracture was followed by AO plate stabilization. Functional and radiological assessment was carried out according to the criteria of Anderson et al. Excellent and good functional results were achieved in 48 cases, fair in 10 and poor in 12 cases. The ulna united in 75%, the radius in 78% (delayed union included). Cross- union occurred in three patients, one case of destabilization at fracture site was observed, no infection has been noted. Post-traumatic ulnar carpal translocation is a rare, severe ligamentous injury to the wrist. Radiologic findings include widening of the radiocarpal joint space at the radial styloid process and ulnar displacement of the carpus. Less than 50% of the lunate articulates with the radius in the neutral position; the lunate is tilted dorsally with palmar subluxation due to a ruptured radio-scapholunate (RSL) ligament. This malposition should be called rotatory palmar subluxation of the lunate (RPSL), by analogy to rotatory subluxation of the scaphoid (RSS). In contrast to dorsiflexed intercalated s

Six cases of pseudarthrosis of the forearm are reported. One involved only the radius, one the ulna alone, and four both forearm bones. There was associated neurofibromatosis in five cases. All the cases were treated by wide resection and free vascularized fibular graft. In two cases, a single-bone forearm was created. In all cases, good results were achieved, with moderate forearm shortening. The literature suggests electrical stimulation, corticoperiosteal graft, osteotomy of the involved bone, and free vascularized bone grafting as treatment alternatives. Vascularized free bone grafting app
