Changes in myocardial blood flow during development of and recovery from tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy.

BACKGROUND: Chronic supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) causes a dilated cardiomyopathy and myocyte injury. Termination of SVT improves left ventricular (LV) function but is associated with LV hypertrophy. Changes in myocardial blood flow (MBF) that may accompany the development of and recovery from SVT cardiomyopathy might have a significant effect on LV function and myocyte structure. The goal of this study was to relate changes in LV function, myocyte composition, and coronary vascular structure to changes in MBF with the development and recovery of SVT cardiomyopathy. METHODS AND RESULTS:

Spectrophotometric studies on NAD(P)H oxidase of leukocytes. 1. The relationship between granule-NAD(P)H oxidase and myeloperoxidase.

The NAD(P)H oxidase located in granules from resting leukocytes seems to be identical with myeloperoxidase on the basis of the following results. Spectral changes representing the difference between granules with and without NAD(P)H under various conditions represented the formation of compound III of myeloperoxidase, corresponding to the oxidation of NAD(P)H. The KCN difference spectrum of granules from both resting and phagocytizing leukocytes was in agreement with the KCN difference spectrum of myeloperoxidase. The affinity of KCN for myeloperoxidase was the same in both resting and phagocy

Prognostic relevance of exercise pulmonary hypertension: results of the multicentre PEX-NET Clinical Research Collaboration.

BACKGROUND: Exercise pulmonary hypertension (PH) was defined by a mean pulmonary arterial pressure (mPAP)/cardiac output (CO) slope >3 mmHg·min·L-1 between rest and exercise in the 2022 European Society of Cardiology/European Respiratory Society PH guidelines. However, large, multicentre studies on the prognostic relevance of exercise haemodynamics and its added value to resting haemodynamics are missing. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The PEX-NET (Pulmonary Haemodynamics during Exercise Network) registry enrolled patients who underwent clinically indicated right heart catheterisations both at rest an

A review of selective indoor residual spraying for malaria control.

BACKGROUND: Indoor residual spraying (IRS) is one of the most effective malaria control tools. However, its application has become limited to specific contexts due to the increased costs of IRS products and implementation programmes. Selective spraying-selective spray targeted to particular areas/surfaces of dwellings-has been proposed to maintain the malaria control and resistance-management benefits of IRS while decreasing the costs of the intervention. METHODS: A literature search was conducted to find (1) studies that assessed the resting behaviour of Anopheles mosquitoes and (2) studies

Technical note: A method for quantification of saliva secretion and salivary flux of metabolites in dairy cows.

Salivary flow and net jugular flux of metabolites were studied during resting and rumination in 3 lactating dairy cows (BW 548 ± 17.2 kg, days in milk 113 ± 4 d). The method was based on the concentration difference between arterial and jugular blood, and jugular blood flow measured by downstream dilution of p-aminohippuric acid (pAH). Cows were surgically prepared with a permanent arterial catheter in A. intercostales dorsales before the trial. On sampling days, cows were prepared with left and right side jugular, and ear vein catheters for blood sampling and infusion of pAH, respectively. Bl

Subject-specific multivariate modeling for regenerative rehabilitation of bone healing.

Rehabilitation can help promote functional restoration following surgical reconstruction of severe bone injuries, yet prescribed regimens are often conservative due to limited understanding of their impact on healing. This study examined rodent physical activity parameters, including wheel running duration, distance, bout frequency, bout duration, velocity, and rest time, assessing their combined impact on bone healing in 2 and 3 mm segmental defects. Artifical intelligence (AI)-based genetic programming generated high-accuracy nonlinear models, revealing a "goldilocks" phenomenon: some rehabi

Injections of the Hand and Wrist: Part II. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Ganglion Cyst, Intersection Syndrome, Triangular Fibrocartilage Complex Injury, and de Quervain Tenosynovitis.

Family physicians are well-positioned to provide injections for patients who have wrist pain, especially when initial treatments such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and rest fail. Although corticosteroid injections can offer pain relief, possible risks (e.g., infection, cartilage damage, skin depigmentation) should be discussed. Techniques and procedures for injections vary. Studies have shown significant improvement in carpal tunnel syndrome severity over 12 weeks using ultrasound-guided injections compared with landmark-guided injections. Ganglion cyst aspiration can be helpful for

Budd-Chiari syndrome computed tomographic imaging: Elucidating the devil in the details.

Hepatic venous outflow obstruction, due to hepatic venous thrombosis is the hallmark of Budd-Chiari Syndrome (BCS), a relatively uncommon disorder. The aim of this study was to explore imaging details and causes, and define invasive and non-invasive interventions for achieving successful portosystemic shunting (PSS). The variations in imaging topology and associated risk factors in BCS cases, diagnosed during the past 20 months, were studied. Of the 53 cases (32 males, 21 females; mean age: 34.4±13.5 years), 5 (9%) were Hepatitis-B virus (HBV) positive, 12 (23%) were HCV positive and 6 (11%) w

Are articulatory settings mechanically advantageous for speech motor control?

We address the hypothesis that postures adopted during grammatical pauses in speech production are more "mechanically advantageous" than absolute rest positions for facilitating efficient postural motor control of vocal tract articulators. We quantify vocal tract posture corresponding to inter-speech pauses, absolute rest intervals as well as vowel and consonant intervals using automated analysis of video captured with real-time magnetic resonance imaging during production of read and spontaneous speech by 5 healthy speakers of American English. We then use locally-weighted linear regression t

Left ventricular filling pressure assessed by exercise TDI was correlated with early HFNEF in patients with non-obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

BACKGROUND: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) patients are more susceptible to suffer from heart failure with normal ejection fraction (HFNEF). Therefore, it is critical to evaluate the relationship between left ventricular filling pressure (LVFP) and HFNEF, even if a large proportion of HCM patients have normal LVFP at rest. The objective was to assess the correlation between exercise tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) and early HFNEF in HCM patients by treadmill exercise echocardiography combined with cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET). METHOD: Twenty-seven non-obstructive HCM patients and 31 a
