Individual and Binary Mixture Toxicity of Five Nanoparticles in Marine Microalga Heterosigma akashiwo.

The investigation of the combined toxic action of different types of nanoparticles (NPs) and their interaction between each other and with aquatic organisms is an important problem of modern ecotoxicology. In this study, we assessed the individual and mixture toxicities of cadmium and zinc sulfides (CdS and ZnS), titanium dioxide (TiO2), and two types of mesoporous silicon dioxide (with no inclusions (SMB3) and with metal inclusions (SMB24)) by a microalga growth inhibition bioassay. The counting and size measurement of microalga cells and NPs were performed by flow cytometry. The biochemical

Hereditary alpha-tryptasemia modifies clinical phenotypes among individuals with congenital hypermobility disorders.

Hereditary alpha-tryptasemia (HαT) is an autosomal dominant (AD) genetic trait characterized by elevated basal serum tryptase ≥8 ng/mL, caused by increased α-tryptase-encoding TPSAB1 copy number. HαT affects 5% to 7% of Western populations and has been associated with joint hypermobility. Hypermobility disorders are likewise frequently AD, but genetic etiologies are often elusive. Genotyping of individuals with hypermobility spectrum disorder (n = 132), hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (n = 78), or axial skeletal abnormalities with hypermobility (n = 56) was performed. Clinical features of i

Research progress of radiation-induced hypothyroidism in head and neck cancer.

This paper reviews the factors related to hypothyroidism after radiotherapy in patients with head and neck cancer to facilitate the prevention of radiation-induced hypothyroidism and reduce its incidence. Hypothyroidism is a common complication after radiotherapy in patients with head and neck cancer, wherein the higher the radiation dose to the thyroid and pituitary gland, the higher the incidence of hypothyroidism. With prolonged follow-up time, the incidence of hypothyroidism gradually increases. Intensity modulated radiotherapy should limit the dose to the thyroid, which would reduce the i

Banking sector reactions to COVID-19: The role of bank-specific factors and government policy responses.

This paper examines the impact of bank-specific factors and variations in the context of stringency of government policy responses on bank stock returns because of the COVID-19 pandemic. A sample of 1,927 publicly listed banks from 110 countries is used for the period of the first major wave of COVID-19, that is, January to May 2020. Our findings indicate that stock returns of banks with higher capitalization and deposits, more diversification, lower non-performing loans, and larger size are more resilient to the pandemic. While banks' environment and governance scores do not have a significan

[Postural effect of vestibular galvanic stimulation in patients with Parkinson's disease and camptocormia: Case series].

The objective of this paper is to explore the postural effect of galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) in camptocormia. It is a retrospective case series of 7 Parkinson disease and camptocormia patients. Binaural monopolar GVS was administered. Main outcome variable was trunk forward flexion (TFF), assessed pre and immediately post GVS, and one month after. The TFF was assessed in the standing position, with open and closed eyes. The Berg balance scale was assessed before and 1 month after GVS. The TFF immediately after the GVS showed a reduction of 2.3 cm (p = 0.091) in the first reading, and

The relationship between common cognitive screening tests (Standardised Mini-Mental State Examination and Rowland Universal Dementia Assessment Scale) and the Cognitive Functional Independence Measure.

OBJECTIVES: To assess whether the Cognitive Functional Independence Measure (Cog-FIM) is correlated with the Standardised Mini-Mental State Examination (SMMSE) and Rowland Universal Dementia Assessment Scale (RUDAS) and whether there is agreement between the Cog-FIM and these two tests. METHODS: Functional Independence Measure assessments were undertaken on 98 subacute patients. Forty-eight (48) patients were administered the SMMSE, and 50 were administered the RUDAS. Agreement was examined using the Bland-Altman plot. RESULTS: Correlation was observed between the Cog-FIM and both the SMMSE

A global assessment of surveillance methods for dominant malaria vectors.

The epidemiology of human malaria differs considerably between and within geographic regions due, in part, to variability in mosquito species behaviours. Recently, the WHO emphasised stratifying interventions using local surveillance data to reduce malaria. The usefulness of vector surveillance is entirely dependent on the biases inherent in the sampling methods deployed to monitor mosquito populations. To understand and interpret mosquito surveillance data, the frequency of use of malaria vector collection methods was analysed from a georeferenced vector dataset (> 10,000 data records), extra

Noninvasive Assessment of Schistosoma-Related Periportal Fibrosis.

Schistosomiasis affects nearly 250 million individuals in the world. Hepatosplenic schistosomiasis (HSS) results in periportal fibrosis (PPF) and portal hypertension (pHTN). Ultrasound has been extensively used for the diagnosis of Schistosoma-related PPF and a number of staging methods have been validated for this purpose such as Strickland classification and Niamey protocol. Nevertheless, the application of noninvasive techniques, particularly elastography modalities, has not been well explored. In this review, we describe the various noninvasive diagnostic tools for assessment of Schistosom

The Effect of Implanted Functional Electrical Stimulation on Gait Performance in Stroke Survivors: A Systematic Review.

The emerging literature suggests that implantable functional electrical stimulation may improve gait performance in stroke survivors. However, there is no review providing the possible therapeutic effects of implanted functional electrical stimulation on gait performance in stroke survivors. We performed a web-based, systematic paper search using PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and EMBASE. We limited the search results to human subjects and papers published in peer-reviewed journals in English. We did not restrict demographic or clinical characteristics. We included 10 papers in the current syst

TiMEG: an integrative statistical method for partially missing multi-omics data.

Multi-omics data integration is widely used to understand the genetic architecture of disease. In multi-omics association analysis, data collected on multiple omics for the same set of individuals are immensely important for biomarker identification. But when the sample size of such data is limited, the presence of partially missing individual-level observations poses a major challenge in data integration. More often, genotype data are available for all individuals under study but gene expression and/or methylation information are missing for different subsets of those individuals. Here, we de

Assessment of polygenic architecture and risk prediction based on common variants across fourteen cancers.

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have led to the identification of hundreds of susceptibility loci across cancers, but the impact of further studies remains uncertain. Here we analyse summary-level data from GWAS of European ancestry across fourteen cancer sites to estimate the number of common susceptibility variants (polygenicity) and underlying effect-size distribution. All cancers show a high degree of polygenicity, involving at a minimum of thousands of loci. We project that sample sizes required to explain 80% of GWAS heritability vary from 60,000 cases for testicular to over 1,000

Olfactory Function in Depressed Adolescents.

Some researchers have suggested that olfactory deficits might be a sensitive marker for depression in adults. However, olfactory function has not been well studied in relation to depression among children and adolescents. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of depression on olfactory function of adolescents. The olfactory threshold, odor identification, and discrimination abilities of adolescents aged 12 to 17 (43 adolescents with major depressive disorder and 43 healthy controls) alongside their sum were evaluated using the Sniffin' Sticks extended test. Olfactory scores were sim

A Critical Look at a Diabetic Foot Randomized Controlled Trial: Can You Ever Have Too Many Patients?

The objective of this article series is to teach approaches for critical appraisal to consumers of medical literature. The aim is to build a deeper understanding of standard procedure in clinical research so clinicians can determine whether medical evidence can be applied to their practices. We will choose published articles with methodological flaws to serve as discussion points. In the first article of this series, we will proceed section by section through an article to teach readers what is usually reported, and illustrate what was done correctly and what was not. Subsequently, later artic

The light at the end of the tunnel gets vivid for spinal muscular atrophy: An Editorial Highlight for "Cerebrospinal fluid proteomic profiling in nusinersen-treated patients with spinal muscular atrophy" on page 650.

Kessler et al. in this current issue have attempted to discern biomarker(s) for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) by assessing alterations in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) proteomics profile. Recently, antisense oligonucleotide (nusinersen) therapy is shown to mitigate pathologies and provide behavioral improvements in patients. This Editorial highlights the study by Kessler et al on the proteomics of CSF from adult and young patients prior to, and 10 months after nusinersen intrathecal therapy. Although the study by Kessler et al. suffers from small sample size and mixed results that deterred a stron

C9orf72 Gene Expression in Frontotemporal Dementia and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

We studied the expression of C9orf72 gene in pathologies associated with hexanucleotide repeats expansion in this gene: frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The study included 7 patients with hexanucleotide repeats expansion in the C9orf72 gene and 9 patients of the control group. The expression of C9orf72 mRNA was evaluated in blood leukocytes by real-time PCR. Methylation of CpG-sites in C9orf72 promotor region was evaluated by DNA sequencing after bisulfite conversion. A 2-fold decrease in the C9orf72 gene expression was found in patients with hexanucleotid

Evidence and potential mechanisms of traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of psoriasis vulgaris: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Psoriasis vulgaris (PV) not only affects patients' skin health but also increases the risk of coronary heart disease and diabetes, which brings both physical and mental harms. Its pathogenesis is complex, and the multitarget effect of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is especially advantageous. Because a considerable number of randomized controlled trials related to TCM exhibit design defects, small sample size, or inadequate intervention time, so the status of TCM in the treatment of PV cannot be fully clarified. We reviewed the controlled clinical trials published over the past decade and

The current study examined the clinical utility of the Restructured Form of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2-RF) in a residential treatment program for homeless individuals. MMPI-2-RF scale scores from 146 participants with valid profiles were correlated with variables obtained at intake and during treatment. The sample was then followed 12 months postdischarge to test preregistered hypotheses regarding MMPI-2-RF predictors of hospital readmissions. The results indicated that a variety of MMPI-2-RF scale scores were correlated with historical and diagnostic variables a
