Hematological changes in formaldehyde-exposed workers: A critical review and meta-analysis.

Formaldehyde (FA) is a widely used chemical with known carcinogenic properties, particularly for the upper respiratory tract. Concerns about probable FA-induced hematotoxicity and leukemia have sparked investigations into its health risks. This review scrutinized the quality of exposure evaluations in studies exploring the hematotoxicity of FA and assessed the association between FA exposure and blood dyscrasias. A total of 22 studies were included in the systematic review; among them, 10 provided sufficient data for meta-analysis. FA exposure was significantly associated with changes in blood

Towards the clinical use of peripheral bile acids: Recommendations to limit their preanalytical and analytical sources of variability.

Despite more than three decades of research, the use of peripheral bile acids as biomarkers for human liver injury remains inconclusive due to inconsistent findings. Identifying the factors contributing to the variability in published peripheral bile acid data in humans is needed to propose experimental recommendations that could enhance the robustness and reproducibility of future studies. Besides the peripheral blood bile acid data, the metadata on subject demographics (number of subjects, average age, sex distribution, health status, fasted/fed status), the blood matrix analyzed, the matrix

GC-MS and GC-MS/MS measurement of malondialdehyde (MDA) in clinical studies: Pre-analytical and clinical considerations.

Malondialdehyde (MDA; 1,3-propanedial, OHC-CH2-CHO) is one of the most frequently measured biomarkers of oxidative stress in plasma and serum. L-Arginine (Arg) is the substrate of nitric oxide synthases (NOS), which convert L-arginine to nitric oxide (NO) and L-citrulline. The Arg/NO pathway comprises several members, including the endogenous NOS-activity inhibitor asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) and its major metabolite dimethyl amine (DMA), and nitrite and nitrate, the major NO metabolites. Reliable measurement of MDA and members of the Arg/NO pathway in plasma, serum, urine and in other

Circulating neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin and preeclampsia: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies evaluating the association between circulating neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and the risk of preeclampsia (PE) showed inconsistent results. A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to summarize the relationship between circulating NGAL and PE. METHODS: Studies comparing the circulating NGAL between pregnant women with PE and controls with no PE were found by searching Medline, Web of Science, Cochrane's Library, and Embase. Pooling results was performed using a random-effects model incorporating heterogeneity. RESULTS: In the study,

Autoimmune disease and oral squamous cell carcinoma: A systematic review.

BackgroundOral cancer is typically related to environmental carcinogen exposure including tobacco and alcohol. Other less investigated risk factors may be related to a suppressed or dysregulated immune state, and in oral cancer, various levels of immune dysregulation have been found to affect survival and recurrence rates. The rationale for this systematic review was to investigate the possible role that a growing chronic host condition like an autoimmune disease may play in this disease.MethodsA systematic search of the literature was carried out using four electronic databases in order to id

Nutrition Support and Tight Glucose Control in Critically Ill Children: Food for Thought!

Numerous studies have examined the strategy of tight glucose control (TGC) with intensive insulin therapy (IIT) to improve clinical outcomes in critically ill adults and children. Although early studies of TGC with IIT demonstrated improved outcomes at the cost of elevated hypoglycemia rates, subsequent studies in both adults and children have not demonstrated any benefit from such a strategy. Differences in patient populations, variable glycemic targets, and glucose control protocols, inconsistency in attaining these targets, heterogeneous intermittent sampling, and measurement techniques, an

[Value of sleep and neuroendocrine tests as biological markers of depression in children and adolescents].

In this article, we systematically reviewed the results of application of biological markers of depression to children and adolescents. Concerning sleep EEG, only three studies on a total of twelve among 267 depressed children and adolescents aged 6 to 19 years found the typical sleep abnormalities described in depressed adults (eg, shortened REM latency and decreased sleep efficiency). Most authors insisted on the age-related sleep changes as a major confounding factor. Two studies of the effect of antidepressant therapy on sleep showed a decrease in sleep efficiency but a discrepancy in the

Minimally invasive autopsy for fetuses and children based on a combination of post-mortem MRI and endoscopic examination: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Less invasive perinatal and paediatric autopsy methods, such as imaging alongside targeted endoscopy and organ biopsy, may address declining consent rates for traditional autopsy, but their acceptability and accuracy are not known. OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to provide empirical data on the acceptability and likely uptake for different types of autopsy among key stakeholders (study 1); and to analyse existing autopsy data sources to provide estimates of the potential efficacy of less invasive autopsy (LIA) and its projected utility in clinical practice (study 2). Oxidative Stress and Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is the most common arrhythmia after cardiac surgery and is linked to higher mortality and hospitalizations. Oxidative injury may contribute to its development; therefore, we aimed to systematically evaluate the relationship between oxidative stress biomarkers and POAF. MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched from inception to August 2026 for studies reporting oxidative stress biomarkers and POAF in adults undergoing cardiac surgery. Altogether, 31 studies (4,983 patients) were included; most were at high risk of bias by QUIPS assessment.

Monitoring antimicrobial resistance in care homes through wastewater surveillance: a scoping review.

Antimicrobial resistance poses a growing threat, especially in care homes where older residents are particularly vulnerable due to frequent antibiotic use and comorbidities. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a growing focus on wastewater surveillance for detecting and monitoring pathogens in healthcare settings. This study followed the Joanna Briggs Institute scoping review framework to map the extent of available literature on wastewater-based epidemiological studies addressing antimicrobial resistance in care homes for older adults. Six electronic databases (Medline, Embase, Sc

The apelinergic-axis in human preeclamptic pregnancies: A systematic review.

The apelinergic-axis (Apelin, Elabela and their receptor APJ) is involved in many physiological and pathological processes. Both Elabela/APJ and Apelin/APJ are implicated in the pathophysiology of preeclampsia in rodents. However, the findings regarding the apelinergic axis in human preeclamptic placental development have been rather conflicting. In this systematic review we present an overview of the current evidence regarding the pathophysiological role of Apelin, Elabela and their receptor in human preeclamptic pregnancies. The databases used for this systematic review were Pubmed, Scopus,

Exposure to PFOA and PFOS and fetal growth: a critical merging of toxicological and epidemiological data.

UNLABELLED: Toxicological and epidemiological evidence on the association between perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) or perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and birth/fetal weight was assessed. An extensive search for toxicological information in rats and mice, and a systematic search for epidemiological evidence were conducted. The linear regression coefficient (LRC) of birth weight (BrthW) on PFOA/PFOS was considered, and separate random effects meta-analyses for untransformed (i.e. not mathematically transformed) and log-transformed values were performed. Toxicological evidence: PFOA: 12 studies

Metabolomics: a tool for early detection of toxicological effects and an opportunity for biology based grouping of chemicals-from QSAR to QBAR.

BASF has developed a Metabolomics database (MetaMap(®) Tox) containing approximately 500 data rich chemicals, agrochemicals and drugs. This metabolome-database has been built based upon 28-day studies in rats (adapted to OECD 407 guideline) with blood sampling and metabolic profiling after 7, 14 and 28 days of test substance treatment. Numerous metabolome patterns have been established for different toxicological targets (liver, kidney, thyroid, testes, blood, nervous system and endocrine system) which are specific for different toxicological modes of action. With these patterns early detectio

The assessment of regional skeletal metabolism: studies of osteoporosis treatments using quantitative radionuclide imaging.

Studies of bone remodeling using bone biopsy and biochemical markers of bone turnover play an important role in research studies to investigate the effect of new osteoporosis treatments on bone quality. Quantitative radionuclide imaging using either positron emission tomography with fluorine-18 sodium fluoride or gamma camera studies with technetium-99m methylene diphosphonate provides a novel tool for studying bone metabolism that complements conventional methods, such as bone turnover markers (BTMs). Unlike BTMs, which measure the integrated response to treatment across the whole skeleton, r
