Children from six cultures reliably help their peers-but in different ways.

Helping others is an integral part of human sociality, but systematic cross-cultural comparisons of children's helping behavior are rare. Existing work has mainly focused on interactions between adults and children, paying less attention to peer dynamics-which are more relevant in many cultural settings. Here, we report a study of 4- to 9-y-old children's (N = 336) spontaneous helping in 6 highly diverse populations in Latin America, Africa, and Europe (Wichí, Quechua, ≠Akhoe Hai||om, Samburu, Kikuyu, and Germans). In all settings, we observed pairs of same-aged children in an experimental tas

Sharing is ethicizing: Examining the impact of sharing observed unethical behavior with family members on ethical voice at work.

"It takes a village" to build an ethical workplace, and employees who witness unethical behavior in the workplace play a crucial role in alerting organizations to wrongdoing and preventing its recurrence. While prior research has primarily focused on personal and intraorganizational factors shaping observer responses to workplace unethical behavior, the potential influence of extraorganizational factors has been largely overlooked. Recognizing that employees often share workplace experiences with close others, such as their family members, we explore how the extent of sharing with family membe

Barriers and Facilitators to Community-Based Physical Activity Participation Among Children and Adolescents With Developmental Disabilities in South Korea: Professionals' and Parents' Perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Children and adolescents with developmental disabilities often encounter substantial barriers to physical activity. However, prior research has rarely provided a comprehensive understanding that integrates multiple perspectives. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with nine parents and seven sports professionals in South Korea. Data were analysed thematically using Braun and Clarke's six-phase framework. RESULTS: Identified barriers included inaccessible or poorly maintained facilities, societal stigma, insufficient instructor qualifications, fragmented administrativ

Understanding food behavior through territorial identity: evidence on locavorism, certification awareness, and novel food acceptance.

Global agri-food systems face increasing challenges related to sustainability, public health, and food security, requiring a transition toward more integrated and demand-oriented approaches. In this context, consumer behavior plays a key role, as food choices are shaped not only by economic factors but also by social and psychological dimensions, including identity. This study examines how configurations of territorial identity encompassing local, national, and global attachments are associated with food-related dispositions and behaviors. Using survey data from 1,237 consumers living in a met

Narrative 2 Numbers (N2N): Leveraging a Hackathon Approach to Generate Ideas and Approaches for Using Mixed Methods to Strengthen Public Health Preparedness and Response.

Public health emergencies require rapid decision making using incomplete and evolving information, yet tools to quickly integrate actionable qualitative and quantitative data remain limited. To address this gap, we describe a replicable hackathon model that enabled the development of mixed-methods solutions to inform public health preparedness and response. The NYC Preparedness & Recovery Institute hosted Narrative 2 Numbers (N2N), a one-day mixed methods hackathon to generate innovative approaches for real-time, data-informed public health action. Fifty-six participants from diverse backgroun

Supportive Care in What? Myths and Misconceptions That Prevent the Provision of Excellent Cancer Care.

Supportive cancer care focuses on the prevention and management of the adverse effects of cancer and its treatment, with the aim of preserving quality of life, physical functioning, social and vocational well-being, treatment adherence, and survival. As cancer survival rates improve and poor-quality survivorship has become increasingly recognized, supportive care has become more important than ever, forming the basis of compassionate care that places the person, not their cancer, at the center of their treatment. Despite its proven benefits, supportive care remains undervalued, inconsistently

Using a virtual reality role-playing game to enhance interaction dynamics and improve social attitudes toward transgender people.

While virtual reality (VR) interventions have demonstrated efficacy in reducing intergroup prejudice, they have yet to be applied to transprejudice. Accordingly, we developed a VR role-playing game (RPG) that integrates perspective-taking and intergroup-contact for transgender identities. We evaluated the RPG's impact on cisgender individuals' movement dynamics and social attitudes toward transgender people using a mixed experimental design, in which 162 participants embodied a self-customised transgender avatar and interacted with a cisgender or transgender virtual colleague. Empathy increase

The Socio-Spatial Dynamics of Aging: Evidence From Kamrup Metropolitan District.

Aging presents intensifying challenges including physical vulnerability, social isolation, and financial insecurity, predicted by biological age yet critically shaped by environmental context. This qualitative study explores how these vulnerabilities accumulate across World Health Organization (WHO)- age groups (Young-Old, Old-Old, and Oldest-Old) using in-depth narratives from thirty diverse older adults in urban Assam, India. Moving beyond purely biological understandings, the study adopts an integrated framework synthesizing Lawton's Ecological Model, Cumulative Disadvantage (CAD) Theory, a

Research on the influence mechanism of AI developmental feedback on job crafting.

Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) are continuously reshaping the design, demand, and boundaries of job skills, leading to the marginalization of work reliant on fixed processes and repetitive knowledge. In human-AI collaborative work settings, employees must engage in job crafting to adapt to this new environment. Integrating social information processing theory (SIPT) and self-determination theory (SDT), this study proposes and tests a theoretical model to investigate the impact of AI developmental feedback on job crafting. Across three studies-a critical incident survey (Study 1) and

China's carbon emission trading and income inequality: evidence from factor substitution.

As carbon pricing mechanisms gain global prominence, understanding their distributional impacts, particularly in developing economies, becomes crucial for the design of equitable climate policies. We explore the effect of carbon emission trading (CET) policy on income inequality in China through integrated theoretical and empirical analysis. We find that the CET policy significantly reduces income inequality, and this conclusion passed the robustness tests. Theoretical analysis shows that if carbon emission allowances are treated as an input factor of production, when carbon prices are relativ

Integrating Phosphatidylethanol to Enhance Alcohol Quantification in Steatotic Liver Disease and Clinical Trials.

Accurate quantification of alcohol intake is essential for the diagnosis, subclassification, and management of steatotic liver disease (SLD). In everyday clinical practice, alcohol histories rely primarily on physician-assisted self-report, with validated questionnaires used variably. Both provider-level inconsistencies in documentation and patient-level factors (e.g., recall and social-desirability biases) can contribute to misclassification of SLD subtypes. Phosphatidylethanol (PEth), a direct alcohol biomarker detectable for ~2-4 weeks, has emerged as a promising objective tool that can com

Vaccines, Bias, and the Perils of Non-peer-reviewed Studies: Fueling Misinformation and Vaccine Hesitancy.

Unvetted scientific claims about vaccines can spread rapidly and undermine decades of progress in immunization and public trust. A recent non-peer-reviewed analysis, promoted at political hearings, in the documentary "An Inconvenient Study," and on social media, has been used to suggest that vaccinated children experience higher rates of chronic illness than unvaccinated peers. Despite standard regression models, critical flaws - uncontrolled confounding, exposure misclassification, unequal follow-up, and outcome multiplicity, invalidate causal inference. An independent group of international

Preclinical models of female pelvic pain disorders.

Pain is influenced by a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and social factors. Sex has emerged as a key determinant of vulnerability to chronic pain and a major risk factor for poor response to available pharmacological treatments. Women report higher rates of chronic pain and exhibit greater pain sensitivity; however, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Preclinical models are essential to uncover sex-specific biological pathways involved in pain and to guide the development of novel, targeted therapies through translational approaches. This review summarizes anima

Cuprizone-induced demyelination model mice exhibit antisocial maltreating behavior: an experimental animal study.

PURPOSE: The structural integrity of white matter in the human brain, including myelination, is important not only for brain pathology but also for cognitive functions, including social behavior. Here, we investigated the relationship between myelination abnormalities and antisocial maltreating behavior in mice. METHODS: The demyelination model was generated by feeding cuprizone to C57BL/6 mice. Luxol fast blue staining was performed to visualize myelin. The demyelination model was subjected to a maltreating behavioral task. Oxytocin (OXY), haloperidol (HAL), and 8-hydroxy-2-(di-n-propylamino

A wireless modular platform for neuro-behavioral recording and closed-loop manipulation in small animals.

Investigating the neural mechanisms of social group interactions and other naturalistic behaviors in small animals remains limited by current technology. Tethered neural recording systems are incompatible with many of these behaviors, while existing wireless devices for small animals are constrained by weight, bandwidth, recording duration and the lack of closed-loop modulation capabilities. Here we overcome these limitations by developing a Wireless, Interactive, Lightweight Datalogger (WILD) with integrated flexible neural probes, optogenetics, an inertial measurement unit, an ultrasonic mic

Neural Mechanisms of Bidirectional Visuo-Linguistic Transformation in Interactive Communication.

Human communication requires the flexible transformation of visual input into verbal descriptions and the reconstruction of mental imagery from language. However, the neural mechanisms underlying these bidirectional transformations during social interaction remain poorly understood. Using hyperscanning fMRI and a role-switching communicative task, we investigated how individuals alternately encode visual stimuli into language and decode language into mental imagery within an interactive context. Whole-brain analyses identified brain regions implicated in these processes. Based on these finding

Health effects of air pollution on chronic respiratory diseases.

Exposure to both outdoor and indoor air pollution poses significant global public health challenges at all life stages. As the respiratory system serves as the primary entry route for inhaled pollutants, extensive evidence has demonstrated the detrimental effects of various air pollutants on respiratory health. Air pollution is a well-established risk factor for the development, exacerbation, and mortality of chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs), including airway diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, interstitial lung disease, and lung cancer. This review summarizes th
