The prevalence of myopia remains stable under tighter COVID-19 social restriction in preschoolers receiving a school-based eyecare program.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the impact of different levels of COVID-19 social restrictions (social distancing in 2020, large-scale home confinement in 2021) on myopia prevalence and behaviours in a preschool population with school-based eyecare programme. METHODS: Repeated cross-sectional surveys were conducted between August and December in 2019, 2020 and 2021. Children aged 5-6 years received ocular examinations, and questionnaires were answered by caregivers before the day of the examination. The main outcome measures were the changes in after-school time spent on homework, screen-bas

Prevalence, trend and contributing factors of geriatric syndromes among older Swedes: results from the Stockholm County Council Public Health Surveys.

BACKGROUND: Evidence is scarce on the trend in prevalence of geriatric syndromes (GS). This study assesses how GS prevalence changes over time in Swedish older community-dwellers by socio-demography, and attempts to highlight factors that may contribute to explain the trend. METHODS: Data from Stockholm County Council Public Health Surveys in 2006, 2010 and 2014 were used. Old adults, aged 65-84 years, with measurements on GS items were identified. Thus, a total of 17,560 participants were selected in 2006 (n = 6295), 2010 (n = 6733) and 2014 (n = 4532). Data on socio-demographics, lifestyles

Knowledge about infection is the only predictor of treatment in patients with chronic hepatitis C.

HCV is the leading cause of cirrhosis and liver cancer in the U.S. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has recently recommended 'Birth Cohort Screening' of the U.S. Adult population to reduce the future burden of undiagnosed HCV infections in the U.S. Our aim was to assess independent predictors of receiving treatment in a cohort of HCV-infected patients. The Hepatitis C follow-up questionnaires of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) conducted from 2001 to 2010 were used. The NHANES participants who tested positive for HCV RNA were followed by CDC 6 months after ini

Investigating the Use of Melatonin in Children With Atopic Dermatitis: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Children with atopic dermatitis (AD) frequently experience sleep disturbances. Melatonin, an over-the-counter supplement, is increasingly used in the general pediatric population; however, its prevalence and perceived effectiveness in children with AD remain unclear. METHODS: Caregivers of pediatric patients (ages 1-17 years) with physician-diagnosed AD completed surveys on melatonin use, Patient Oriented Eczema Measure (POEM), and age-appropriate sleep questionnaires. RESULTS: Among 102 total respondents, 27.5% reported a history of melatonin use, with 10.8% using it

Patients' and paediatric gastroenterologists' assessments of the follow-up of coeliac disease in Spain.

INTRODUCTION: There is high variability in the follow-up of paediatric patients with coeliac disease (CD) in Europe. The aim of this study was to know the current reality of paediatric CD follow-up in Spain through professionals and the patients themselves and their families. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted using 2 anonymous web surveys, one aimed at paediatric gastroenterologists, and the other at members of CD patients' associations. RESULTS: A total of 96 responses from paediatricians and 4745 from patients (1362<15 years) were analysed. Among the p

STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive Psychometrics Study OBJECTIVES: Neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD), or "neurogenic bladder" is a common and disruptive condition for individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) and disease (including multiple sclerosis, MS). Our team has developed patient-centered instruments of urinary symptoms specific to patients with NLUTD, across bladder management methods. Validity evidence is needed to support the use of two new instruments, Urinary Symptom Questionnaires for people with Neurogenic Bladder (USQNB) for those who manage their bladder with indwelling

Responsiveness of the University of California-Los Angeles Prostate Cancer Index.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the responsiveness of the University of California-Los Angeles Prostate Cancer Index (UCLA-PCI) by studying its sensitivity to clinically perceptible changes in health over time in men treated for localized prostate cancer. METHODS: All subjects underwent radical prostatectomy (n=253), external beam radiotherapy (n=66), or interstitial seed brachytherapy (n=73). We assessed health-related quality of life (HRQOL) outcomes using the UCLA-PCI to capture disease-specific outcomes and the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form-36 to study general HRQOL. We assessed the UCLA-PCI

Tablet Acceptability in Older Outpatients Undergoing Cancer Chemotherapy.

Background/Objectives: Patient acceptability of oral anticancer drugs is a critical factor that influences treatment in older outpatients receiving cancer chemotherapy and plays a central role in enhancing adherence and treatment effectiveness. Identifying older outpatients receiving cancer chemotherapy who exhibit poor tablet acceptability before initiating oral anticancer therapy and offering alternative treatment options are beneficial. Therefore, we investigated the characteristics of patients with poor tablet acceptability by focusing on the tablet size, geriatric assessment, and polyphar

Cross-cultural adaptation of mental health screening instruments for Samoan adolescents.

Mental health problems appear common among Pacific Islander adolescents. The lack of culturally adapted mental health screening instruments is a barrier to establishing prevalence estimates needed to inform resource allocation and health system budgeting. Following the Gjersing et al. (2010) guidelines, we adapted five clinical mental health screening instruments to measure symptoms of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, and suicide-related indicators for Samoan adolescents. In collaboration with clinical experts and American Samoan adolescents, we employed a four-stage incremental app

The impact of adverse childhood experiences and social support on psychological abuse of elderly females in rural areas of China: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: As the population continues to age rapidly, the issue of elder abuse has become increasingly prominent. Compared to men, elderly women generally encounter greater challenges and are more susceptible to abuse, with psychological abuse being the most prevalent form. Is joint hypermobility linked to self-reported non-recovery from COVID-19? Case-control evidence from the British COVID Symptom Study Biobank.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to explore whether generalised joint hypermobility (GJH, a common marker of variant connective tissue) was a risk factor for self-reported non-recovery from COVID-19 infection. DESIGN: Prospective observational study. SETTING: COVID Symptom Study Biobank (https://cssbiobank.com/) UK. PARTICIPANTS: Participants were surveyed in August 2022. 3064 (81.4%) reported at least one infection with COVID-19. These individuals self-reported on recovery and completed a self-report questionnaire to detect GJH (Hakim and Grahame 5-part questionnaire, 5PQ). MAIN OUTCOME MEAS

Contemporary Imaging Practice Patterns Following Ureteroscopy for Stone Disease.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Routine imaging following ureteroscopy for treatment of renal/ureteral calculi continues to be a topic of debate. However, with the increasing focus on healthcare costs and quality, judicious use of diagnostic imaging to optimize outcomes while minimizing resource utilization is a priority. We sought to identify post-ureteroscopy imaging practices among experienced urologists. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A REDcap questionnaire was sent to urologists in North America. The questionnaire surveyed demographic data, clinical volume, and imaging preferences post-ureteroscopy. Add
