PURPOSE: Postactivation performance enhancement (PAPE), which refers to the phenomena associated with the attainment of enhanced performance in sport-specific tasks after a conditioning activity, is an important objective of warming-up practices in many sports. This is even more relevant for sprinters, as potential increases in sprinting speed will directly influence their competitive results. This systematic review with meta-analysis evaluated the effects of different PAPE protocols (ie, using plyometrics, strength-power exercises, and resisted/assisted sprints) on the sprinting performance (

INTRODUCTION: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by impairments in social interactions, social communication, and repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior. Previous studies have reported mixed findings regarding the links between language (i.e., phonology, morphosyntax, lexicon, and pragmatics), theory of mind (ToM), executive functions (EFs), and central coherence measures in children with ASD.
METHODS: A total of 163 Palestinian-Arabic-speaking children aged 4-11 participated: 76 with ASD and 87 with typical language development (TLD). The children`s phonological, morpho

OBJECTIVE: Abnormalities in impulse propagation and cardiac repolarization are frequent in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), leading to abnormalities in 12-lead electrocardiograms (ECGs). Computational ECG analysis can identify electrophysiological and structural remodeling and predict arrhythmias. This requires accurate ECG segmentation. It is unknown whether current segmentation methods developed using datasets containing annotations for mostly normal heartbeats perform well in HCM. Here, we present a segmentation method to effectively identify ECG waves across 12-lead HCM ECGs.
METHODS: W

Dynamic functional connectivity (FC) analyses have provided ample information on the disturbances of global functional brain organization in patients with schizophrenia. However, our understanding about the dynamics of local FC in never-treated first episode schizophrenia (FES) patients is still rudimentary. Dynamic Regional Phase Synchrony (DRePS), a newly developed dynamic local FC analysis method that could quantify the instantaneous phase synchronization in local spatial scale, overcomes the limitations of commonly used sliding-window methods. The current study performed a comprehensive ex

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Abnormalities in muscle tone, such as postural hypotonia, can significantly affect motor development and postural control in children, often presenting with unclear origins and subtle clinical manifestations. These disturbances may also be associated with broader musculoskeletal dysfunctions. The presented research aims to examine whether electromyographic signal analysis can support the objective evaluation of muscle tone abnormalities in children.
METHODS: Electromyography (EMG) signals were recorded from the sternocleidomastoid and rectus abdominis muscles during

Medical-image annotation is costly and limits the use of fully supervised learning. This study proposes the Self-Supervised Stacked Masked Denoising Autoencoder (S2MDAE) for four-class brain MRI classification. During pre-training, three convolutional encoder-decoder blocks perform layer-wise masked reconstruction under a 75% mask ratio and Gaussian corruption; the pretrained encoder stack is then fine-tuned for classification. On the primary dataset, S2MDAE achieved 87.207% Accuracy, while ablation studies supported the contributions of pre-training, masking, noise injection, and layer-wise r

The ability to ignore salient yet irrelevant stimuli is essential to accomplishing even simple tasks. Previous research has shown that observers are better able to suppress distracting stimuli via experience; yet the precise mechanisms of this learned suppression is a subject of debate. The current study (n = 230) employed a psychophysical approach combined with computational modeling to examine how learned spatial suppression affects perception and performance. The results show that items presented at suppressed locations are perceived as less bright than those in non-suppressed areas, sugges

We move our eyes and head to sample the visual environment. While these movements are essential for survival, they greatly complicate the analysis of retinal image motion. Our brain must account for the visual consequences of self-motion to perceive the 3D layout and motion of objects in a scene. We show that traditional models of visual compensation for eye movements fail when the eye both translates and rotates, and we propose a theory that computes both motion and depth in more natural viewing geometries. Consistent with our theoretical predictions, humans exhibit distinct perceptual biases

HIV activism has a long history of advancing HIV treatment and is critical in dismantling HIV-related stigma. This study evaluated the psychometric quality of the HIV Activist Identity, Commitment, and Orientation Scale (HAICOS) to assess clinicians' propensity towards HIV activism in Malaysia. From November 2022 to March 2023, 74 general practitioners and primary care physicians in Malaysia participated in the study. The exploratory factor analysis (EFA) extracted an internally consistent three-factor solution with 13 items: (1) HIV activist identity and commitment, orientation towards (2) da

Misokinesia is a prevalent condition characterized by strong, negative emotional reactions to the sight of repetitive fidgeting movements in others. Here we present the results of a study designed to explore the relationship between misokinesia sensitivity (MKS) and attentional sensitivity to affectively-valenced visual stimuli. In particular, we asked participants with either high or low levels of MKS to perform an emotional oddball task that included responding to faces that had either angry or happy expressions, while we recorded event-related potentials. We found that there were no signifi

The autonomous driving community has witnessed a rapid growth in approaches that embrace an end-to-end algorithm framework, utilizing raw sensor input to generate vehicle motion plans, instead of concentrating on individual tasks such as detection and motion prediction. End-to-end systems, in comparison to modular pipelines, benefit from joint feature optimization for perception and planning. This field has flourished due to the availability of large-scale datasets, closed-loop evaluation, and the increasing need for autonomous driving algorithms to perform effectively in challenging scenarios

Finite element models (FEM) of the tongue have facilitated speech studies through analysis of internal muscle forces indirectly derived from imaging data. In this work, we build a uniform hexahedral FEM of a tongue atlas constructed from magnetic resonance imaging data of a healthy population. The FEM is driven by inverse internal tongue tissue kinematics of speakers temporally aligned and deformed into the same atlas space, while performing the speech task "a souk" allowing muscle activation predictions. This work aims to investigate the commonalities in tongue motor strategies in the articul

The purpose of this study was to assess quantitatively the effects of compression garments (CGs) on fatigue behaviour during sport activities such as running, which are the subject of a series of qualitative and physiological studies. A quantitative biomechanical analysis of the effects of CGs could assist coaches and athletes to adopt these types of performance enhancement garments. In this research, kinematic changes are measured using 2D phase portraits to study the influence of CGs on fatigue behaviour. Fifteen healthy male intermediate athletes participated in this study and the kinematic

Improper manual material handling (MMH) techniques are shown to lead to low back pain, the most common work-related musculoskeletal disorder. Due to the complex nature and variability of MMH and obtrusiveness and subjectiveness of existing hazard analysis methods, providing systematic, continuous, and automated risk assessment is challenging. We present a machine learning algorithm to detect and classify MMH tasks using minimally-intrusive instrumented insoles and chest-mounted accelerometers. Six participants performed standing, walking, lifting/lowering, carrying, side-to-side load transferr

Postmarketing population pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) studies can be useful to capture patient characteristics affecting PK or PD in real-world settings. These studies require longitudinally measured dose, outcomes, and covariates in large numbers of patients; however, prospective data collection is cost-prohibitive. Electronic health records (EHRs) can be an excellent source for such data, but there are challenges, including accurate ascertainment of drug dose. We developed a standardized system to prepare datasets from EHRs for population PK/PD studies. Our system handles a

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are major causes of morbidity among workers. They comprise several signs and symptoms, as e.g. pain, paresthesia, fatigue and limited range of motion, which can be related to work tasks. Workplace-related factors include physical, psychological, social and biomechanical hazards. The main kinetic factors associated with MSDs include repetitive movements, exerting excessive force, awkward postures, compression and mechanical vibration. Accurate knowledge of epidemiological aspects, evaluation of ergonomic hazards and musculoskeletal symptoms, and workplace exerci
