This is a retrospective study of the benefit of transconjunctival cryotherapy for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in 43 eyes of 22 infants (birth weight 716-1675 g) from July 1985 to January 1988. Nine eyes were treated at ROP stage 4A (early), 14 eyes at stage 3 plus disease, and 20 eyes at stage 3. Cryotherapy was applied to the retinal avascular zone. In 13 eyes the ridge of extraretinal fibrovascular proliferation was also treated. Two eyes with peripheral exudative retinal detachment in two quadrants had additional treatment of the area of elevated retina. Reexamination was performed at

Syringobulbia is a term which has been clinically applied to brain stem symptoms or signs in patients with syringomyelia. Syringobulbia clefts are found on investigation or at necropsy caused by cutting outwards of the CSF under pressure from the fourth ventricle into the medulla. These should be differentiated from the ascending syringobulbia which may occur from upward impulsive fluid movements in a previously established syringomyelia. Clinical analysis of 54 patients suggests that bulbar features are most often found with neither of the above mechanisms but are due to the effects of pressu

One hundred and four cases of osteoarticular tuberculosis were studied. There were 74 boys (71.2%) and 30 girls (28.8%). The mean age at the onset of symptoms was 7.3 years, ranging from 9 months to 18 years. Seventy four cases (71%) reported 3 months after onset of symptoms. The spine was the commonest site involved (43%) followed by hip (14.9%) and knee joints (10.3%). Evidence of active or inactive pulmonary tuberculosis was found in 16.2%. All cases were treated by three drug regimen of rifampicin, isoniazid and ethambutol; rifampicin was discontinued after 6 months, ethambutol after 12-14

The effect of local administration of thrombin via a newly devised four-way balloon indwelling catheter was investigated on 89 patients who underwent transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). The catheter was introduced into the bladder immediately after TURP, the balloon was inflated with sterile water and mild moist sponge traction was applied to seal the bladder neck for 15 minutes. At the same time, the thrombin solution, 5,000 U in 5 ml of saline, was then injected into the prostatic fossa via the newly added infusion channel to promote early hemostasis. The results were compared wi

The author analyses the results of 20 eyes with retinal detachment (RD) treated by the Pneumatic Retinopexy procedure (intra-vitreal gas injection and coagulation of the retinal breaks). The selected RD's were caused by peripheral retinal breaks located in the superior 270 degrees of the retina and of less than 45 degrees width. Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) was grade C1 or less. In 15% of the cases, the RD was a recurrence after previous surgery and 10% of the eyes were aphakic. The anatomic success rate was 95% both initially and after 6 months follow up. Three (15%) recurrences of R

After lumbar puncture (LP) an epidural CSF leakage caused by delayed closure of a dural defect leads to a decrease in CSF pressure. The resultant venous dilatation as well as downward shift of the brain with traction on pain-sensitive blood vessels and nerves frequently evokes post-lumbar puncture headache (PLPH), when the patient assumes the upright position. In previous studies differing opinions have been expressed about the prophylactic value of the posture taken by the patient after LP. The present study was designed to evaluate the benefit of the decrease of hydrostatic CSF pressure on t

In the webbed-neck deformity, a horizontal excess of cervical skin creates bilateral and often asymmetrical skin webs from the mastoid to the acromion. Hair extends laterally to the free edge on the posterior web surface, creating a wide nuchal hairline. A technique of correction is presented. Through an incision along or within the hairline, the glabrous anterior web surface is undermined with the platysma muscle into the anterior cervical triangle until posterosuperior traction will obliterate the web. The posterior hair-bearing web surface is also elevated, and an excess of scalp is excised

The authors report 188 patients with acute cervical spine injury with fracture who underwent Halo-thoracic brace immobilization. The majority of the fractures were considered unstable. Early neurological assessment revealed 24 patients without neurological deficit. There were 164 patients with associated cervical cord injury; 84 patients with incomplete, and 80 patients with complete tetraplegia. Management consisted of skull traction and application of the Halo-thoracic brace about 1.3 weeks after admission. The average radiological union time was 11.5 weeks following a mean of 10.2 weeks of

Subtotal open-sky vitrectomy can be used to improve visual function in some eyes for which closed vitrectomy is useless. Open-sky vitrectomy allows easier access for surgical instruments, especially to anterior fundus structures. The technique also improves the visibility of intraocular structures. The surgical procedure, which uses special instruments and high-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid, is divided into four stages: preparation, operating inside the vitreous cavity, wound closure, and retinal reattachment. In 290 consecutive operations for which complete follow-up data are available, re

Stenosis of the vertebral canal is a form of compressive stenosis in contrast to transport stenosis of vessels or other channels. The concept, definition and pathomorphological properties are discussed. As it is a form of compressive stenosis, the diagnosis is based on measurements of diameters rather than of cross-sectional surfaces. The biomechanical action of compressive stenosis is compression of the fixed living content at two opposite sites or at all sites. The special properties of sciatica in stenosis are described and presented in tabular form. Some properties of neurogenic intermitte

The clinical findings in a group of 32 rheumatoid patients with symptomatic myelopathy are described. The myelopathy appeared in late middle age after many years of rheumatoid disease (average duration, 18 years). The most common radiological abnormality was anterior subluxation of C1. Other patterns occurred in about half the cases. The most common neurological findings were those of a mild to moderate spastic paraplegia, often with atrophy of muscles of the hands and sensory changes in the hands. Symptoms originating above the foramen magnum (nystagmus, diplopia, slurred speech) appeared to

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of cervical spondylotic radiculopathy (CSR) remains high. Conventional conservative treatments have limited efficacy in relieving mechanical nerve root compression, while surgery is highly invasive. Both acupotomy release and ultrasound-guided brachial plexus hydrodissection are minimally invasive interventions for CSR. Nevertheless, high-level multicenter evidence-based medical data regarding the safety and efficacy of their combined application are still lacking.
METHODS: This multicenter retrospective study enrolled 264 patients with CSR treated at four traditio

BACKGROUND: We aimed to evaluate the image quality, feasibility, and diagnostic performance of three-dimensional ultrashort echo time magnetic resonance imaging (3D UTE-MRI) to assess idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) compared with high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) and half-Fourier single-shot turbo spin-echo (HASTE) MRI.
METHODS: A total of 36 patients with IPF (34 men; mean age: 62±8 years, age range: 43 to 78 years) were prospectively included and underwent HRCT and chest MRI on the same day. Chest MRI was performed with a free-breathing 3D spiral UTE pulse sequence and HASTE se

PURPOSE: To present outcomes in a series of patients with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS)-hypermobility type who underwent hip arthroscopy for associated hip pain and extreme capsular laxity.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review identified 16 hips with confirmed EDS--hypermobility type that underwent hip arthroscopy for continued pain and capsular laxity. All patients had complaints of "giving way" and pain, an easily distractible hip with manual traction under fluoroscopy, and a patulous capsule at the time of surgery. No patient had osseous evidence of acetabular hip dysplasia or prior confir

BACKGROUND: The main goal of treatment in early-onset scoliosis is to obtain and maintain curve correction while simultaneously preserving spinal, trunk, and lung growth. This study introduces a new surgical strategy, called the modified growing rod technique, which allows spinal growth and lung development while controlling the main deformity with apical and intermediate anchors without fusion. The use of intraoperative traction at the initial procedure enables spontaneous correction of the deformity and decreases the need for forceful correction maneuvers on the immature spine and prevents p

Understanding how stromal and immune cells regulate tumor mechanics is essential for deciphering cancer progression and therapy resistance. This study presents a microparticle-based traction force microscopy strategy for in situ quantification of compressive forces within 3D tumor spheroids. Multicellular spheroids composed of tumor cells (T), fibroblasts (F), and macrophages (M) were generated to mimic the tumor microenvironment and to understand the contribution of fibroblast-macrophage crosstalk in tumor mechanobiology. Tri-culture spheroids exhibited the highest proliferative capacity comp

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder primarily characterized by motor dysfunction; however, recent studies have highlighted a broad spectrum of non-motor symptoms, including cognitive impairment and psychological harm. While dopaminergic drugs effectively manage motor symptoms in the early stages, efficacy often declines, and symptoms may worsen as the disease progresses. Kinsenoside, the primary bioactive compound from Anoectochilus formosanus, exhibits diverse pharmacological effects, yet its potential in treating PD remains unexplored. This study evaluated whether

Cavernous sinus dural arteriovenous fistulas (CSdAVFs) pose technical challenges for transvenous embolization, particularly when the inferior petrosal sinus is inaccessible and transfacial venous routes are tortuous. We describe a "finger-assisted" technique involving percutaneous manual stabilization of the guide catheter microcatheter (GC-MC) construct to overcome instability during transfemoral transfacial navigation. A 33-year-old woman with progressive ocular symptoms and an angiographically confirmed Barrow Type D CSdAVF underwent transvenous embolization via the facial vein and superior

Since fetal ECG (FECG) produces much lower signal amplitudes than maternal ECG (MECG), it is highly susceptible to volume-conduction effects, respiration, and fetal movements. Therefore, the observed abdominal signals exhibit pronounced nonlinear mixing and time-varying characteristics, which severely limit extraction accuracy. To tackle this complex maternal-fetal mixing, this paper pro poses a tensor decomposition of multi-dimensional sub space representation (TD-MDSC) scheme for improving ex traction accuracy and robustness. First, an adaptive multi subspace decoupling (AMSD) mechanism is d

Patient rejection of unpalatable products can adversely affect therapeutic adherence, potentially leading to treatment failure. Taste masking is a goal in pharmaceutical development, particularly when developing formulations for paediatric patients. The use of an electronic tongue (e-tongue) enables rapid, objective, and robust taste evaluation. Its use is gaining traction in the quality assessment of pharmaceutical products. The capability of an Alpha Astree II taste-sensing system to evaluate the palatability of commercially available hyoscine butylbromide (HBB) syrup brands in South Africa,
