The callosal pattern in striate cortex is more patchy in monocularly enucleated albino than pigmented rats.

We investigated the effect of neonatal monocular enucleation on the pattern of interhemispheric connections through the corpus callosum in occipital cortex of pigmented and albino rats. Callosal connections were revealed in tangential sections through the flattened cortex following multiple injections of horseradish peroxidase into the opposite hemisphere. In pigmented rats, we found that monocular enucleation induces the development of an anomalous band-like accumulation of callosal connections in middle portions of striate cortex in the hemisphere ipsilateral to the remaining eye, as reporte

Shades of gray matter: noninvasive optical images of human brain responses during visual stimulation.

Recent theories about human brain function emphasize the need for imaging methods that allow the study of dynamic interactions among different structures. In this paper, we report on a new technique, based on the measurement of parameters of migration of near-infrared photons, that yields functional images of the human occipital cortex, combining a spatial resolution of 0.5 cm and a temporal resolution of 50 ms. This technique appears to be suitable for studying the dynamics of cortical activation.

Comparative potency of tactile, auditory, and visual stimulus repetition in eliciting activated forebrain EEG in the rabbit.

The experiments addressed the question of whether certain modalities of stimulation are more effective in eliciting immobility-related, atropine-sensitive neocortical low-voltage fast activity and hippocampal rhythmical slow activity from the rabbit. More pronounced activation and less pronounced habituation followed tactile than auditory and visual stimulation. On the basis of these results, and other studies, it is suggested that atropine-sensitive electroencephalographic activity may be importantly involved in the central programming, initiation, and guidance of movement.

Arachnoiditis and VECP change.

A five-year-old boy presented with tuberculous meningitis and subsequently developed amaurosis with optochiasmatic arachnoiditis (OCA) late in the convalescent stage of the illness. The visual evoked cortical potentials were correlated with the decreased and improved postoperative acuity. The diagnosis and classification of OCA have been discussed with emphasis given to prompt neurosurgical treatment.

Interocular transfer of the motion after-effect in normal and stereoblind observers.

The extent of interocular transfer of the motion after-effect was measured in 4 stereoblind subjects and in 19 subjects having varying degrees of stereopsis. Stereoblind individuals failed completely to show any interocular transfer of this after-effect, while subjects with good stereopsis exhibited between 55 and 82 percent transfer (mean 73 percent). Furthermore, normal subjects who manifested a clear eye dominance tended to show greater transfer from the dominant to the nondominant eye than vice versa. Individuals who either had a history of a strabismus or possessed some other early impedi

Radiological diagnosis of the inner ear malformations in children with sensorineural hearing loss.

Malformations in either the inner ear, vestibulocochlear nerve (VIIIth) or auditory cortex of the brain can lead to congenital sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). In most cases the underlying disorders involve the membranous labyrinth at a microscopic level and therefore radiological examinations are entirely normal. In a significant proportion however (up to 20%), there are abnormalities visualized in the inner ear and/or the VIIIth nerve; the type of abnormality is relevant for the surgical planning of a cochlear implant. Imaging and the accurate radiological identification of the affected in

Visualization of periventricular collaterals in moyamoya disease with flow-sensitive black-blood magnetic resonance angiography: preliminary experience.

Fragile abnormal collaterals in moyamoya disease, known as "moyamoya vessels," have rarely been defined. While flow-sensitive black-blood magnetic resonance angiography (FSBB-MRA) is a promising technique for visualizing perforating arteries, as of this writing no other reports exist regarding its application to moyamoya disease. Six adults with moyamoya disease underwent FSBB-MRA. It depicted abnormal collaterals as extended lenticulostriate, thalamic perforating, or choroidal arteries, which were all connected to the medullary or insular artery in the periventricular area and supplied the co

Functional abnormalities in the dyslexic brain: a quantitative meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies.

This study used foci from 17 original studies on functional abnormalities in the dyslexic brain to identify brain regions with consistent under- or overactivation. Studies were included when reading or reading-related tasks were performed on visually presented stimuli and when results reported coordinates for group differences. Activation likelihood estimation (ALE) was used for quantification. Maxima of underactivation were found in inferior parietal, superior temporal, middle and inferior temporal, and fusiform regions of the left hemisphere. With respect to left frontal abnormalities, we fo

[Temporal sequence of SWD emergence and spontaneous jerks in WAG/Rij rats with absence epilepsy].

In rat model of absence epilepsy, abnormal complex movements of cervicothorathic part (jerks) were observed in the state of passive wakefulness. When a desynchronized low-amplitude electrical activity was recorded in the parietal and visual cortex, either SWD or jerks were observed. The SWD appearance prevented a jerk. If the discharge appeared between jerks, the interval between jerks increased. Particularly important is the fact that after subtraction of the discharge duration, the distribution of intervals between jerks became the same as in the absence of the SWD. This finding shows that a

Physostigmine enhances blood flow-metabolism ratio in neocortex.

Inhibition of central nervous system cholinesterase with a single pulse of physostigmine induces a pronounced increase of blood flow in the neocortex, cingulate gyrus, claustrum, and amygdala. This phenomenon is not accompanied by an increase in energy metabolism and may help explain the effect of this drug on memory in normal humans and patients with Alzheimer's disease, as well as other conditions. In contrast, a parallel increase of blood flow and metabolism was observed in the superior colliculus, a component of the visual pathways. Prolonged administration of physostigmine lead to persist

Neurophysiologically-informed markers of individual variability and pharmacological manipulation of human cortical gamma.

The ability to quantify synaptic function at the level of cortical microcircuits from non-invasive data would be enormously useful in the study of neuronal processing in humans and the pathophysiology that attends many neuropsychiatric disorders. Here, we provide proof of principle that one can estimate inter-and intra-laminar interactions among specific neuronal populations using induced gamma responses in the visual cortex of human subjects - using dynamic causal modelling based upon the canonical microcircuit (CMC; a simplistic model of a cortical column). Using variability in induced (spec

Impaired visuocortical discrimination learning of socially conditioned stimuli in social anxiety.

In search of causative factors of social anxiety disorder (SAD), classical conditioning has been discussed as a potential trigger mechanism for many years. Recent findings suggest that the social relevance of the unconditioned stimulus (US) might play a major role in learning theories of SAD. Thus, this study applied a social conditioning paradigm with disorder-relevant US to examine the electrocortical correlates of affective learning. Twenty-four high socially anxious (HSA) and 23 age- and gender-matched low socially anxious (LSA) subjects were conditioned to 3 different faces flickering at

Human Ecstasy use is associated with increased cortical excitability: an fMRI study.

The serotonergic neurotoxin, 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA/Ecstasy), is a highly popular recreational drug. Human recreational MDMA users have neurocognitive and neuropsychiatric impairments, and human neuroimaging data are consistent with animal reports of serotonin neurotoxicity. However, functional neuroimaging studies have not found consistent effects of MDMA on brain neurophysiology in human users. Several lines of evidence suggest that studying MDMA effects in visual system might reveal the general cortical and subcortical neurophysiological consequences of MDMA use. We used 3

Exploring vision-related acupuncture point specificity with multivoxel pattern analysis.

Acupoint specificity is one of the central issues of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies of acupuncture and has been under discussed. However, strong and consistent proof has not been provided for the existence of acupoint specificity, and unsuitable analysis approach applied could be the reason. We observed that previous researches of acupoint specificity were mostly based on model-based methods which were limited to make exploration of acupoint specificity because of the inaccurate specified prior. Here we applied multi-voxel pattern analysis (MVPA) to investigate the specif

Making the link between dorsal stream sensitivity and reading.

Different levels of dorsal stream functioning were teased apart to determine whether the observed deficits in dyslexic readers may exist as early as the retinal level, and to explore the relative contribution that the different aspects of dorsal processing may make to reading. The paradigm combining frequency doubled stimuli with endogenous cueing demonstrated that dyslexic readers possess a retinal level magnocellular deficit. Regression analyses provided evidence to suggest that different levels of dorsal processing relates to various aspects of reading skills, with low-level magnocellular M

Evidence for both reaching and grasping activity in the medial parieto-occipital cortex of the macaque.

In humans, the caudal pole of the superior parietal lobule is involved in the control of both reaching and grasping movements, whereas in monkey it is reported to be involved only in the control of reaching. Using single-unit recordings from trained macaque monkeys, we investigated whether area V6A, a visuomotor area located in the caudal part of the posterior parietal cortex, is involved in both components of prehension, the hand transport towards the visual target and the grip formation to secure the grasp. In Experiment 1, neural activity was recorded in V6A while two monkeys performed two

Hemispheric, attentional, and processing speed factors in the treatment of developmental dyslexia.

Aim of the study is to analyze the contributions of hemispheric, attentional, and processing speed factors to the effects of neuropsychological treatment of developmental dyslexia. Four groups of dyslexic children (M-type dyslexia) were treated over a period of four months. A first group (n = 9) underwent Bakker's Hemisphere-Specific Stimulation, with presentation of words in the right and left visual field. A second group (n = 7) received the same stimuli randomly in either visual hemifield. A third group (n = 8) received the same words presented centrally at fixation point. A fourth group (n
