Visual hallucinations in the 19th century: research in a medical archive.

The authors have gathered and analyzed the visual hallucinations described in the mid- to late-19th century from archived medical records of the former psychiatric hospital "Osservanza" in Imola, northern Italy. Though the investigation was not intended as a statistical survey, the principal aim being to classify the hallucinations according to their outward characteristics, the authors have tried to locate the possible sources of these phenomena in folklore and religious iconography.

Abnormal processing of visual motion in dyslexia revealed by functional brain imaging.

It is widely accepted that dyslexics have deficits in reading and phonological awareness, but there is increasing evidence that they also exhibit visual processing abnormalities that may be confined to particular portions of the visual system. In primate visual pathways, inputs from parvocellular or magnocellular layers of the lateral geniculate nucleus remain partly segregated in projections to extrastriate cortical areas specialized for processing colour and form versus motion. In studies of dyslexia, psychophysical and anatomical evidence indicate an anomaly in the magnocellular visual subs

Using self-view television to distinguish between self-examination and social behavior in the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus).

In mirror mark tests dolphins twist, posture, and engage in open-mouth and head movements, often repetitive. Because postures and an open mouth are also dolphin social behaviors, we used self-view television as a manipulatable mirror to distinguish between self-examination and social behavior. Two dolphins were exposed to alternating real-time self-view ("mirror mode") and playback of the same to determine if they distinguished between them. The adult male engaged in elaborate open-mouth behaviors in mirror mode, but usually just watched when played back the same material. Mirror mode behavior

Different uses of chromatic signals in patients with congenital and acquired colour vision deficiencies.

Chromatic signals can be used to generate perceived colour and also to detect spatially structured objects defined only by chromatic differences. These two attributes have previously been investigated in dichromats and cerebral achromatopsic patients using a new colour vision test developed at City University that makes possible the isolation of pure chromatic signals (Barbur et al. Proc. R. Soc. London B 258, 327-334, 1994). We have investigated acquired colour vision changes in a 69-year-old patient, after conventional colour vision tests gave ambiguous results. His ability to detect an obje

Signal-detection analysis of the Müller-Lyer and the Horizontal-Vertical illusions.

Perceptual error in the Müller-Lyer and the Horizontal-Vertical illusions was quantified using nonparametric signal-detection measures of sensitivity and response bias. Sensitivity scores were positively related to signal strength with the greatest values observed for the strongest signals. Sensitivity at each signal strength did not differ between the two illusions. Response-bias scores were inversely related to signal strength, with the most conservative biases observed for the strongest signals. Response biases for each signal strength were significantly more conservative for the Horizontal

Rotational swimming tendencies in the dolphin (Tursiops truncatus).

Anecdotal evidence suggests that dolphins placed in a pool exhibit stereotypic swimming in circles. The present study confirmed these observations in a sample of thirteen dolphins. The majority of dolphins (84.6%) showed highly consistent directional swimming in counterclockwise circles. The latter directionality held throughout the circadian cycle and resisted environmental manipulations. Only social interaction was capable of altering the directionality of circumnavigation. The consistency of unidirectional swimming is considered paradoxical in view of the existing evidence regarding the alt

Do autistics have a generalized face processing deficit?

The study presents results from a clinical test battery (Bruyer & Schweich, 1991; Schweich & Bruyer, 1993) that is used to study components in the face recognition system of autistic children. The results of the autistics are compared with the performance of two age groups of normal children (7-10 years, 12-16 years) and an adult control group. Autistic subjects, like young children, make more errors on a task in which they have to match facial features in the context of a complete face but not when the features are presented in isolation or in a simplified facial context. Finally, the sensiti

Attentional dyslexia: a single case study.

A single case study of an attentional dyslexic is reported. The patient B.A.L. was able to read single letters and single words presented in isolation without difficulty. However, his reading of prose was very disrupted and his ability to read rows of letters and words was significantly impaired. A "flanking" procedure, in which there was a single target item, flanked by other stimuli, was used in a series of experiments to analyse his dyslexic impairment. First it was established that his attentional deficit was specific to reading in so far as the patient did not have comparable difficulties

Diffractive multifocal intraocular lens implants for unilateral cataracts in prepresbyopic patients.

Multifocal intraocular lenses allow pseudophakic patients to obtain good near and distance visual acuities without an additional near correction. We report our experiences in implanting diffractive multifocal intraocular lenses in prepresbyopic patients with acquired unilateral cataracts and assess their postoperative visual acuities and stereoscopic vision. Accommodative function in patients following cataract surgery is discussed.

Self-induced pattern-sensitive epilepsy in childhood.

We studied five children (1 boy and 4 girls) with self-induced pattern-sensitive epilepsy. All patients had refractory epilepsy with multiform, though mainly myoclonic, seizures and medium grade to severe mental retardation. Spontaneously self-induced seizures were documented in all cases by EEG. All the patients underwent full neurophysiological assessment (baseline EEG recording, with activation: eyelid closed, hyperventilation, ILS, EEG during the randomized presentation of 3 types of spatial structured stimuli, VEP-F and VEP-PR). The pattern that triggered the EEG anomalies was highly spec

Visual persistence and adult dyslexia.

Visual persistence was investigated in adults with and without dyslexia in order to determine whether the adults with dyslexia demonstrate problems similar to those found in childhood dyslexia. Using a temporal separation threshold measure and procedures derived from signal detection theory, sensitivity to sequentially presented form information was determined for the two types of adults. The results showed that the sensitivity of the adults with dyslexia was impaired relative to that of the nondisabled adults when parts of a test stimulus were presented to adjacent retinal areas. This result

Perceptual asymmetry for happy-sad chimeric faces: effects of mood.

Happy-sad chimeric face drawings were viewed in free vision by normal subjects. A significant and reliable perceiver bias toward the left hemiface when judging facial expression was found in right-handers whereas no consistent bias was found in non-right handers. This bias tended to be more pronounced in females. Subjects' current mood influenced their choice of facial affect but not their perceptual bias. In a further experiment, subjects were tested during induced elation and once more during induced depression. Again, though these moods increased the number of happy and sad choices respecti

Visuoperceptual function in visual agnosia.

Two patients with visual agnosia underwent visual recognition and neuropsychological tests to characterize their perceptual functioning. Both had an initial "apperceptive profile" and evolved from cortical blindness. One had carbon monoxide intoxication and incidental agenesis of the splenium of the corpus callosum; the other had the clinical features of MELAS (mitochondrial encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like syndrome). The agnosia profile showed impaired object recognition but adequate visual matching and copying of unrecognized items. The patients were successful on form discri

Retinal potentials in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma: physiological evidence for temporal frequency tuning deficits.

The pattern-reversal retinal potential is a bio-electrical signal which can be recorded from the cornea of the human eye when a phase-alternating (contrast-reversing) pattern is viewed. The PRRP is correlated with activity of the retinal ganglion cells and visual diseases which affect the proximal retinal layers (such as optic atrophy and optic neuritis) and cause significant alterations in the waveform of the human PRRP. This study examined the PRRP in 32 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and 32 age-matched visual normals (AMVNs). Counterphasing (2, 4, 8 and 16 reversals/sec) c

Cerebellar targets of visual pontine cells in the cat.

The cerebellum receives visual mossy fiber input from the cerebral cortex via visual cells in the pons. We identified the regions of cat cerebellum that receive cerebral visual input by injecting orthograde tracers among physiologically identified visual pontine cells. Cerebellar labeling following these injections indicates that the contralateral paraflocculus and the rostral folium of the uvula (vermal lobule IX) receive the heaviest projection from cortically activated pontine visual cells. Lighter visual input reaches much of the rest of the contralateral posterior lobe. A second experimen

Effects of different stimulus manipulations of the acquisition of word recognition in trainable mentally retarded children.

The present study was designed to assess the efficacy of different procedures for establishing transfer of stimulus control from pictorial representations to printed words in trainable mentally retarded school children. The study consisted of two experiments. In experiment 1, four training conditions were used, i.e. two conditions (stimulus shaping and stimulus connected prompt fading) in which the subjects' attention was guided to the training stimuli, and two conditions (stimulus disconnected prompt fading and no fading) in which the subjects were allowed to respond only to the prompts. Hierarchical planning disability in the drawings and constructions of a special group of severely aphasic children.

A small group of severely receptive aphasic children who appear to be suffering from a rare aphasic syndrome that has been referred to in the literature as "acquired aphasia with convulsive disorder in children" was tested on drawing and construction tasks which tap hierarchical planning abilities. Although they could draw and construct a complex figure when using a serial method, they could not do so when required to use hierarchical planning in building up the model in terms of its subunits. Their scores reflecting hierarchical ability were significantly lower than those of age-matched profo
