Field-Portable Vapor and Trace Residue Detection of Drugs and Explosives.

Detecting vapor from drugs and explosives is challenging due to their extremely low vapor pressures, often in the parts-per-trillion (pptv) to parts-per-quadrillion (ppqv) range. Atmospheric flow tube-mass spectrometry (AFT-MS) overcomes this limitation by extending ion-molecule reaction times, achieving detection of ppqv levels of vapor and femtogram levels of residue. However, the prior AFT-MS system was large (∼435 lbs.), limiting field deployment. To enhance portability, the AFT was integrated with a miniaturized, ruggedized, field-portable linear ion trap mass spectrometer (∼45 lbs.). Thi

An overview of atmospheric non-methane hydrocarbons over the Indian subcontinent: perspective for future research.

This critical review delves into non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs), a class of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that consist of carbon and hydrogen atoms, and are distinguished from methane due to their higher reactivity in the atmosphere. NMHCs play a critical role in tropospheric ozone formation and secondary aerosol production, with implications for air quality and human health. This review synthesizes existing findings on NMHC species, sources, and measurement techniques across diverse regions of India, highlighting elevated BTEX levels in urban-industrial regions, and the significant data

The Influence of the Ozonation Process on the Quality Parameters and Physicochemical Stability of Horse Meat.

The aim of this study was to demonstrate the effect of gaseous ozonation at a concentration of 10 ppm on the quality of horse meat. Samples of the longissimus thoracis (LT) muscle were exposed to ozone for 1, 5, and 15 min and then stored at 4 °C for 6 and 48 h. Ozonation caused a deterioration in the water-holding capacity of muscle tissue. Significant changes in the color of horse meat were observed, as longer exposure to ozone intensified oxidative processes in the meat. The volatile compound profile after 48 h indicated significant lipid degradation and an increase in aldehydes, typical of

Cheeseomics of Grana Padano PDO cheese: Microbial diversity and flavour profiles compared to non-PDO cheeses.

Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) schemes define technological constraints that may shape cheese microbiota and, consequently, volatilome and sensory quality. Here, a "cheesomics" approach to compare Grana Padano PDO (n = 13) with hard cooked cheeses of the same type and ripening time (9 months) produced outside the PDO framework (non-PDO; n = 15). Shotgun metagenomics was used to characterize bacterial and fungal communities and functional profile, while the volatilome was profiled by HS-SPME/GC-MS and sensory attributes were evaluated by trained ONAF panelist. A subset of samples (4 PDO

Effects of light-shielding treatment on the quality and flavor of 'Ziyan' tea wine during storage: Insights from color, taste, and aroma.

Light exposure during storage is crucial for colored alcoholic beverages. 'Ziyan' tea wine is an anthocyanin-rich low-alcohol beverage, while the impact of light on its quality during storage remains unclear. Here, effects of light-shielding storage on the color, chemical composition, and aroma of 'Ziyan' tea wine were systematically investigated. Results showed that light-shielding suppressed the increase in hue angle, which increased by 7.17 (13.3 in unshielded group). It slowed the decline in anthocyanins content (11.5% retention after 12 months). Besides, the light-shielded group exhibited

Effect of roasting pretreatment of macadamia nut (Macadamia integrifolia) kernels on the physicochemical properties and flavour of macadamia nut-based beverages.

This study investigated the influence of nut roasting pretreatment (85-145 °C, 10-30 min) on the physicochemical, sensory properties and flavour of macadamia nut-based beverages. The results revealed that roasting conditions influenced various quality parameters, with an increase in roasting temperature having a greater impact on the beverage than an extension of roasting time. Roasting at 125 °C for 20 min was identified as the optimal condition, producing beverages with higher total soluble solids content, improved stability, and superior sensory acceptability. The fatty acid compositions of

Structural dynamics and environmental safety of thyme essential oil-based nanoemulsions: a look at nanoscale organization and ecotoxicological outcomes.

The development of stable, high-concentration oil-in-water nanoemulsions (NEs) incorporating thyme essential oil (TEO) is hindered by intrinsic instability mechanisms, such as Ostwald ripening, and by challenges in characterizing concentrated, optically complex systems. Here, a rational, inquiry-driven formulation strategy, aligned with Formulation by Design principles, was applied to produce NEs containing 25% w/w oil phase. By systematically evaluating surfactant type, HLB, and the incorporation of neem oil as a ripening inhibitor, three stable formulations (TT80, TNT80, and TL) were obtaine

In vitro Testing of Trichophyton indotineae Susceptibility to Essential Oil Components Citral and Thymol.

Tinea corporis caused by Trichophyton indotineae infection is a worldwide epidemic and represents a growing challenge, given that many strains of this dermatophyte are resistant to the antifungal drugs (allylamine and azoles) typically used to treat dermatophytosis. Phytochemicals isolated from essential oils are effective alternatives for inhibiting microbial pathogens. In the present study, we performed in vitro susceptibility testing of the phytochemicals citral and thymol against T. indotineae strains, including a multi-drug-resistant isolate. The susceptibility of T. indotineae to citral,
