Systemic mastocytosis is an extremely rare disease characterised by abnormal mast cell production and accumulation of mast cells in the bone marrow or organs, and to some extent also in the skin (urticaria pigmentosa). To date there have been no descriptions of death caused by systemic mastocytosis. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: IgA deficient patients are at risk of severe anaphylactic reaction on being transfused blood and blood products, and its prevalence varies in different parts of the world. No data are available from India. We did a blood donor survey to look for prevalence of IgA deficiency in north India.
METHODS: A sensitive enzyme linked immunosorbent assay developed in-house was used to detect IgA deficiency in a total of 3818 blood donors. Complete IgA deficiency was defined as value less than 5 mg/dl whereas partial IgA deficiency was defined as value between 5-30 mg/dl.

A 72-year-old male patient was scheduled for coronary artery bypass graft surgery because of severe three-vessel disease. Induction of anaesthesia was uneventful. The safety of i.v. immunoglobulin therapy, as compared to other therapeutic measures used in modern medicine today, is rather good. However, a number of side effects may become serious in patients at risk. BACKGROUND: The clinical and immunologic consequences of discontinuing venom immunotherapy are not well-defined. To determine which patients can safely stop treatment, we accepted all volunteers who had completed at least 5 years of maintenance venom immunotherapy regardless of the severity of the historical sting reaction, the persistence of venom skin test sensitivity, or any other variable.
