UNLABELLED: The Hippo kinases MST1 and MST2 initiate a highly conserved signaling cascade called the Hippo pathway that limits organ size and tumor formation in animals. Intriguingly, pathogens hijack this host pathway during infection, but the role of MST1/2 in innate immune cells against pathogens is unclear. In this report, we generated Mst1/2 knockout macrophages to investigate the regulatory activities of the Hippo kinases in immunity. Transcriptomic analyses identified differentially expressed genes (DEGs) regulated by MST1/2 that are enriched in biological pathways, such as systemic lup

INTRODUCTION: In the dairy industry, calves are typically fed diets rich in highly fermentable carbohydrates and low in fibrous feeds to maximize ruminal papillae and tissue development. Calves on such diets are vulnerable at developing ruminal acidosis. Prevalent in cattle, liver abscess (LA) is considered a sequela to ruminal acidosis. LAs can cause significant liver function condemnation and decreased growth and production. Currently, we know little about the liver microbiome in calves with feed-induced acidosis.
METHODS: Using our established model of ruminal acidosis, where young calves

BACKGROUND: Falciparum and endemic Burkitt lymphoma (eBL) are co-endemic in Africa, but the malaria experience in eBL patients is unknown. A lower prevalence of falciparum has been reported in eBL patients, but those results are anecdotally attributed to pre-enrollment anti-malaria treatment.
METHODS: We studied 677 eBL patients and 2920 community controls aged 0-15 years enrolled in six regions in Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya during 2010-2016. Falciparum was diagnosed using thick blood film microscopy (TFM) and antigen-capture rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs). Guardians of the children answered

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is a globally important zoonotic disease, with complex exposure pathways that depend on interactions between human beings, animals, and the environment. Major drivers of outbreaks include flooding, urbanisation, poverty, and agricultural intensification. The intensity of these drivers and their relative importance vary between geographical areas; however, non-spatial regression methods are incapable of capturing the spatial variations. This study aimed to explore the use of geographically weighted logistic regression (GWLR) to provide insights into the ecoepidemiology

Infections by larval stages of tapeworms of the genus Echinococcus (echinococcosis or hydatid disease) are zoonotic infections of major public health importance throughout much of the world. Humans become infected through accidental ingestion of eggs passed in faeces of canid definitive hosts. Tibetan populations of China have some of the highest documented levels of infections by both Echinococcus granulosus and E. multilocularis, the causes of cystic and alveolar echinococcosis, respectively. In this study we measured the prevalence of cystic (CE) and alveolar (AE) echinococcosis disease in

It is now known that pheromonal communication plays an important role in mammalian behaviour and reproductive processes. Chemical communication with pheromones is one means of transmitting such information. In mammals, signalling and priming pheromones are thought to act either singly or in combination through olfaction, auditory, visual (sight) or tactile stimuli. Pheromones are air-borne chemical substances ("signals") released in the urine or feces of animals or secreted from cutaneous glands that are perceived by the olfactory system and that elicit both behavioural and endocrine responses

As quarantine control of international travellers dies away, health screening of immigrants becomes more important. Port health controls attempt to identify the sick immigrant, thereby limiting disease spread among susceptibles and sparking early treatment. Port health controls also ease the impact of immigrants arriving at destinations by alerting relevant authorities so that they can begin health education procedures early, if they wish. Two problems arise: some destination authorities make little attempt to trace their immigrants and even those that do cannot find more than 70 per cent so n

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway is critical for liver homeostasis. We have previously shown that hepatocyte β-catenin plays a pleiotropic role in cholestatic injury. However, the role of cholangiocyte β-catenin signaling during cholestasis remains unclear.
METHODS: Inducible-Osteopontin (OPN)-Cre-β-catenin-floxed C57BL/6 mice were used in two cholestasis models. Mdr2 knockout (KO)-β-catenin-floxed:OPN-Cre mice were administered tamoxifen to delete β-catenin from cholangiocytes. Wild-type and cholangiocyte β-catenin KO mice were also administered a 3,5-diethoxycarbonyl-1

UNLABELLED: The host-microbiome interface is rich in metabolite exchanges and exquisitely sensitive to diet. Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) is present at high concentrations at this interface, and is a product of both microbial and host metabolism. The mitochondrial enzyme, sulfide quinone oxidoreductase (SQOR), couples H 2 S detoxification to oxidative phosphorylation; its inherited deficiency presents as Leigh disease. Since an estimated two thirds of systemic H 2 S metabolism originates in gut, it raises questions as to whether impaired sulfide clearance in this compartment contributes to disease

BACKGROUND: Children with under-five year age disproportionally affected with foodborne illness. Campylobacteriosis is the most common foodborne disease next to Norovirus infection. Macrolides are commonly prescribed as the first line of treatment for Campylobacter gastroenteritis, with fluoroquinolone and tetracycline as secondary options. However, resistance to these alternatives has been reported in various regions worldwide.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence, associated risk-factors and antimicrobial resistance of Campylobacter jejuni and C. coli among under-five children with diarrh

In pregnant animals, communication between the mother and conceptus occurs via extracellular vesicles (EVs) that carry several biomolecules such as nucleic acids (miRNAs, mRNAs), proteins, and lipids. At the time of implantation, the endometrium undergoes several morphological and physiological changes, such as angiogenesis, apoptosis, and cell proliferation regulation at the implantation site, to attain a receptive state. This study was conducted to detect pregnancy-specific miRNAs derived from extracellular vesicles in the systemic circulation of Bubalus bubalis (water buffalo) and to assess

Archaea of the order Methanomassiliicoccales use methylated amines such as trimethylamine as the substrates for methanogenesis. They form two large phylogenetic clades and reside in diverse environments, from soil to the human gut. Two genera, one from each clade, inhabit the human gut: Methanomassiliicoccus, which has one cultured representative, and "Candidatus Methanomethylophilus," which has none. Questions remain regarding their distribution across biomes and human populations, their association with other taxa in the gut, and whether host genetics correlate with their abundance. To gain

BACKGROUND: In the Iraqi community, abnormal pregnancy forms a major social and psychological health problem. The underlying etiology of this health phenomenon was varied and included sets of infections and autoimmune diseases. Globally human parvovirus 19 infection is common and the infection attributes to bad obstetric outcomes. The global maternal parvovirus B19 remote infection rate was within a range of 13.2% to 97.9%, while the range of acute infection was between 0.5% to 97.9%. In Arab countries, the IgG seroprevalence was from 53.3% to 74%, while IgM seroprevalence range was 2.2% to 84

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Prosthechea karwinskii (Mart.) J.M.H. Shaw is a Mexican orchid used in traditional medicine by some indigenous communities to treat issues related to inflammation (cough, wounds, burns, and diabetes). Pharmacological research of this orchid could validate its therapeutic uses and demonstrate its potential for treating other health conditions of high prevalence in Mexico, including those associated with oxidative stress such as diabetes, cancer, atherosclerosis, and hypertension as well as inflammation.
AIM OF THE STUDY: The leaf extract from P. karwinskii was e

Porcine and human cysticercosis, caused by the larval stage of tapeworm Taenia solium, is a zoonosis in southern Africa and known to be endemic in South Africa, mainly in Eastern Cape Province. No efforts to control or eradicate this parasite have been made, despite the increasing occurrence in most Eastern Cape districts, except for routine meat inspection at local abattoirs. The parasite poses a potentially serious agricultural problem, public health risk and economic loss amongst Eastern Cape smallholder pig production communities. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiven

Waterfowl, especially ducks and geese, are primary reservoirs for influenza A viruses (IAVs) that evolve and emerge as important pathogens in domestic animals and humans. In contrast to humans, where IAVs infect the respiratory tract and cause significant morbidity and mortality, IAVs infect the gastrointestinal tract of waterfowl and cause little or no pathology and are spread by fecal-oral transmission. For this reason, we examined whether IAV infection is associated with differences in the cloacal microbiome of mallards (Anas platyrhyncos), an important host of IAVs in North America and Eur

The increasing interest for behavioural investigations in aquatic toxicology has heightened the need for developing tools that allow realistic exposure conditions and provide robust quantitative data. Calanoid copepods dominate the zooplankton community in marine and brackish environments. These small organisms have emerged as attractive models because of the sensitivity of their behaviour to important environmental parameters and the significance of self-induced motion in their ecology. Estuarine copepods are particularly relevant in this context because of their incessant exposure to high le
