OBJECTIVE: We report what we believe to be a unique aetiology of the superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome, a recently described condition in which vestibular imbalance and/or hearing loss results from the loss of continuity of the bone overlying the superior semicircular canals.
CASE REPORT: A 58-year-old woman presented with autophony in the right ear and momentary imbalance when shouting (Tullio phenomenon). Temporal bone computed tomography revealed a defect of the right superior semicircular canal caused by an enlarged superior petrosal sinus receiving drainage from a large cer

The purpose of this study was to examine if a pre-determined exposure level and duration of MP3 player music would result in significant changes in cochlear function when measured with audiometric and physiological methods. Distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs), synchronized spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SSOAEs), and hearing thresholds were measured in 20 normal-hearing adults before and after a 30-minute MP3 player music exposure. DPOAEs were acquired with 65/45 dB SPL primary tones (f(2)=0.842-7.996 kHz) with a frequency resolution of 8 points/octave. A probe microphone syst

We conducted a cross-sectional study to determine the prevalence of hearing loss among 1,500 Nigerian schoolchildren aged 9 to 15 years who had chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM). We also attempted to ascertain the effect that this hearing loss had on their academic performance. The study population was drawn from three schools in different socioeconomic tiers-low (n = 300), medium (n = 400), and high (n = 800). Overall, CSOM was present in 35 of these children (2.3%)-12 from the low-status school (4.0%), 11 from the middle-status school (2.8%), and 12 from the high-status school (1.5%);

Potential links between the language and motor systems in the brain have long attracted the interest of developmental psychologists. In this paper, we investigate a link often observed (e.g., [Wolff, P.H., 2002. Timing precision and rhythm in developmental dyslexia. Reading and Writing, 15 (1), 179-206.] between motor tapping and written language skills. We measure rhythmic finger tapping (paced by a metronome beat versus unpaced) and motor dexterity, phonological and auditory processing in 10-year old children, some of whom had a diagnosis of developmental dyslexia. We report links between pa

OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence, characteristics, and evolution of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in infants with a congenital cytomegalovirus infection (cCMV).
STUDY DESIGN: In a prospective 10-year study, 14 021 unselected live-born infants were screened for cCMV by virus isolation in urine. Congenitally infected newborns were evaluated for SNHL during the first 5 years of life.
RESULTS: A total of 74 of the 14 021 infants (0.53%) were congenitally infected; of these, 4 (5.4%) were symptomatic at birth. Hearing testing could be performed in 60 of the infants. SNHL was found in 21%

BACKGROUND: Congenital cytomegalovirus infection is the leading identified nongenetic cause of congenital sensorineural hearing loss. Most of the infections are asymptomatic but may be detected from umbilical cord vein and/or newborn serum positivity for human cytomegalovirus immunoglobulin M, and from urine positivity (on polymerase chain reaction) for human cytomegalovirus deoxyribonucleic acid in the newborn period. Children infected by cytomegalovirus may later develop sensorineural hearing loss. In symptomatically infected infants, ganciclovir therapy administered in the neonatal period p

This report shows the changes that occurred in consecutive audiograms of a patient who underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal cancer and the histopathological examination of the temporal bones. Both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss developed, but followed different modes of progression. In the left ear, an air-bone gap appeared and deepened, while in the right ear, severe conductive hearing loss was present upon admission and improved after treatment. Sensorineural hearing loss was worse in the right ear, but deteriorated gradually in both ears. Histology revealed

A peripheral origin is typically contemplated in a patient presenting with sudden hearing loss (HL) and dizziness without other neurologic manifestations. Although symptoms of anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA) infarction include sudden HL and vertigo, the clinical picture usually shows ipsilateral facial anesthesia or paralysis, Horner's syndrome, contralateral body anesthesia, or cerebellar dysmetria. A 68-year-old female patient developed sudden HL in the right ear and vertigo. A left-beating horizontal torsional nystagmus was observed, and caloric weakness in the right side was not

Age-related hearing loss or presbycusis is hearing loss that progressively worsens with age. With the expected increase in the number of elderly in the United States, the problem is anticipated to be increasingly common, and the impact widely felt in coming years. This article discusses the causes and mechanisms of this type of hearing loss and current research that may lead to new treatments.

Contralateral suppression of transient otoacoustic emissions in 42 premature babies (84 ears; post-conceptional age [PCA] 30-36 weeks) was compared to that of 39 full-term babies (78 ears; PCA: 37-45 weeks). Eighteen healthy adults and ten young children (5-14 years old) were studied as controls. Risk factors for hearing loss were registered in both preterm and full-term groups. An ILO-92 otoacoustic emission recording system was used to deliver linear clicks to the ear examined and broadband noise to the contralateral ear in an alternating on and off mode. Suppression in full-term babies was

The relationship between poor health and cognitive impairment is not fully understood yet. People with Down syndrome are prone to a number of health problems, including congenital heart defect, visual impairment, hearing loss, autoimmune diseases, epilepsy, early-onset Alzheimer's disease and intellectual disability. Our aim was to assess the impact of impaired health on cognitive performance in people with Down syndrome. A series of people with Down syndrome (n=129) were studied for their intellectual disability, sensory impairments and health concerns. The medical and psychological records o

In 2003, it was reported that superior semicircular canal dehiscence can mimic otosclerosis because of low-frequency bone conduction hearing gain and dissipation of air-conducted acoustic energy through the dehiscence. We report the case of a 17-year-old girl with left-sided combined hearing loss thought to be due to otosclerosis. Bone conduction thresholds were -10 dB at 250 and 500 Hz and she had a 40 dB air-bone gap at 250 Hz. When a tuning fork was placed at her ankle she heard it in her left ear. Acoustic reflexes and vestibular evoked myogenic potentials could be elicited bilaterally. Im

Continuous exposure to high sound pressure in aeronautical workers can be associated with inner ear hearing loss. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of deafness among all maintenance workers from a Brazilian Air Force helicopter unit. The methods included the application of individual questionnaires and audiometric tests. The results showed a high prevalence (32.4%) of hearing loss related to time on the job (p < 0.05; RP = 2.11; 95%CI: 1.03-4.32) and the 41-50-year age bracket (p = 0.00; RP < 3.94; 95%CI: 2.04-7.62). No influence was found from selected variables that might result in

Traumatic facial nerve neuroma is rare. There are only 10 reported cases in the literature, caused either by physical trauma or chronic inflammation. Traumatic facial neuromata differ from true facial nerve neoplasms in radiological, macroscopic and microscopic appearance, but clinical presentation is less reliable in differentiating the two. Management depends on the pre-operative grade of facial palsy, as this is a benign condition and surgical management carries a risk of further affecting facial nerve function. We present a further case of traumatic facial nerve neuroma following surgery f

Although there are numerous publications in the literature describing the wide range of diagnosis, classifications and treatment of malformations of the hearing apparatus, even more variations can be found in clinical practice. Indeed, each individual case is unique as far as concerns pathogenesis, clinical course and treatment. The case reported herein describes a 12-year-old boy affected by cranio-facial dysmorphism and monolateral conductive hearing loss in the right ear: followed from radiological diagnosis--carried out to study a malformation of the ear pinna--to surgical treatment.
