The influence of poverty and rabies knowledge on healthcare seeking behaviors and dog ownership, Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: Rabies is a fatal encephalitis caused by lyssaviruses, with most human cases worldwide resulting from rabid dog bites. Although effective animal and human vaccines have been available for over 100 years, control efforts have not been adequately implemented on the global scale and rabies remains one of the greatest global zoonotic threats to human health. We conducted a knowledge, attitudes and practices survey in Northern Cameroon to describe dog ownership characteristics, rates of dog bites, and post-bite healthcare seeking behaviors. METHODS: The survey was performed in four rur

Neuroinflammation, Stress-Related Suicidal Ideation, and Negative Mood in Depression.

IMPORTANCE: Brain translocator protein 18k Da (TSPO) binding, a putative marker of neuroinflammatory processes (eg, gliosis), is associated with stress and elevated in depressed and suicidal populations. However, it is unclear whether neuroinflammation moderates the impact of daily life stress on suicidal ideation and negative affect, thereby increasing risk for suicidal behavior. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of TSPO binding in participants with depression with real-world daily experiences of acute stress-related suicidal ideation and negative affect, as well as history of suicidal b

Adaptation and Utilization of a Postmarket Evaluation Model for Digital Contact Tracing Mobile Health Tools in the United States: Observational Cross-sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Case investigation and contact tracing are core public health activities used to interrupt disease transmission. These activities are traditionally conducted manually. During periods of high COVID-19 incidence, US health departments were unable to scale up case management staff to deliver effective and timely contact-tracing services. In response, digital contact tracing (DCT) apps for mobile phones were introduced to automate these activities. DCT apps detect when other DCT users are close enough to transmit COVID-19 and enable alerts to notify users of potential disease exposure.

Impact of Digital Phenotypes and Question-Asking on Emotional Disorders in Adolescents: 4-Week Field Study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is the period with the highest incidence of mental disorders, with approximately one-third, half, and two-thirds of cases emerging by ages 14, 18, and 25 years, respectively. Proactive interventions are essential, and digital phenotyping has emerged as a promising approach for timely detection and management. However, passive digital phenotyping is limited to sensor-detectable behaviors, while active phenotyping is often confined to clinical scales, missing the opportunity to capture users' subjective perspectives and emotional nuances. Furthermore, the potential therap

Supplemental Intervention for Alcohol Use Disorder Treatment Patients With a Co-Occurring Anxiety Disorder: Technical Development and Functional Testing of an Autonomous Digital Program.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders are common in alcohol use disorder (AUD) treatment patients. Such co-occurring conditions ("comorbidity") have negative prognostic implications for AUD treatment outcomes, yet they commonly go unaddressed in standard AUD care. Over a decade ago, we developed and validated a cognitive behavioral therapy intervention to supplement standard AUD care that, when delivered by trained therapists, improves outcomes in comorbid patients. However, this validated intervention, like many others in addiction care, has not been taken up in community-based AUD treatment programs

Convergent and divergent intranetwork and internetwork connectivity patterns in patients with remitted late-life depression and amnestic mild cognitive impairment.

INTRODUCTION: Both remitted late-life depression (rLLD) and amnesiac mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) alter brain functions in specific regions of the brain. They are also disconnection syndromes that are associated with a high risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD). OBJECTIVES: Resting-state functional connectivity magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fcMRI) was performed to define the shared and distinct aberrant patterns in intranetwork and internetwork connectivity between rLLD and aMCI and to determine how knowledge of these differences might contribute to our essential understanding of t

An Empirical Bayes Mixture Model for Effect Size Distributions in Genome-Wide Association Studies.

Characterizing the distribution of effects from genome-wide genotyping data is crucial for understanding important aspects of the genetic architecture of complex traits, such as number or proportion of non-null loci, average proportion of phenotypic variance explained per non-null effect, power for discovery, and polygenic risk prediction. To this end, previous work has used effect-size models based on various distributions, including the normal and normal mixture distributions, among others. In this paper we propose a scale mixture of two normals model for effect size distributions of genome-

Predictors of depressive symptoms among spouse caregivers in Parkinson's disease.

The objective of this work was to determine the predictors of depressive symptoms among spouse caregivers of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. Little is known about the strain in giving care to PD patients and how the motor, cognitive, and behavioral complications of PD contribute to depression among spouse caregivers. Forty-five consecutive PD patients and their spouse caregivers agreed to be evaluated after a routine clinic visit. Patient demographic data and the presence of hallucinations, delusions, incontinence, and sleep disturbances were obtained. The patients were assessed using the U

Clinical-psychosocial archetypes predict short-term outcomes in inflammatory arthritis: an unsupervised segmentation study.

BACKGROUND: Heterogeneity in inflammatory arthritis (IA) outcomes limits the effectiveness of non-individualized treatment approaches, and digital health platforms can capture psychosocial and behavioral signals that may stratify responses beyond diagnosis or baseline severity. OBJECTIVE: To identify clinically interpretable patient clusters and evaluate their associations with 12-week outcomes in IA, testing whether cluster membership adds information beyond demographics, diagnosis, and baseline symptom burden. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the use of a CE-certified rheumatology appl
