Perinatal markers of estrogen exposure and risk of testicular cancer: follow-up of 1,333,873 Danish males born between 1950 and 2002.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether indicators of an increased prenatal estrogen exposure correlate with risk of testicular cancer. METHODS: This nationwide follow-up study was conducted by linking data on prenatal exposures obtained from medical and birth records for information on incident testicular cancer cases identified from the Danish Cancer Registry. The study population included all boys born between 1950 and 2002 and alive in April 1968 or later with restriction to sons of mothers born after 1935 and alive in April 1968. RESULTS: A total of 2,151 incident testicular cancer cases were ide

Early postnatal blood pressure in preterm infants: effects of chorioamnionitis and timing of antenatal steroids.

Previous studies suggest postnatal blood pressure in preterm infants to be decreased by chorioamnionitis and increased by antenatal steroids (AS). We examined the adjusted effects of both antenatal modulators on postnatal blood pressure (BP), with separate effects reported for histologic chorioamnionitis with or without fetal involvement and timing of AS. General characteristics, BP, and heart rate values during the first 72 h after birth were obtained from 271 infants with gestational age <or=32.0 wk. In unadjusted analyses, chorioamnionitis was associated with lower BP, most prominently so i

Non-pathogenic bacterial flora may inhibit colonization by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in extremely low birth weight infants.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate our hypothesis that non-pathogenic bacterial flora inhibit later colonization with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants, we performed a retrospective investigation of the association between non-pathogenic bacterial flora and later inhibition of colonization by MRSA in ELBW infants. METHODS: A total of 110 preterm infants with birth weight <1,000 g admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Nagano Children's Hospital from January 1997 to December 2003 were analyzed retrospectively with regard to colonizati

Intentional infliximab use during pregnancy for induction or maintenance of remission in Crohn's disease.

AIM: To study the effects of infliximab on pregnancy and foetal outcome. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of women with Crohn's disease treated intentionally with infliximab during pregnancy. The primary outcome measure was the occurrence of congenital malformations. Secondary outcome measures were the rate of premature birth, low-birth weight, small for gestational age infants, intrauterine growth retardation and caesarean section. RESULTS: Ten women were identified. Eight women received maintenance infliximab infusions throughout their pregnancy and two women received the

[Perioperative management of two neonates with severe Ebstein's anomaly with pulmonary atresia].

Ebstein's anomaly appearing during the neonatal period carries a high mortality rate. We report the perioperative management of two neonates with severe Ebstein's anomaly associated with pulmonary atresia. Their chest radiography revealed massive cardiomegaly, with cardiothoracic ratio of 90% and 100%, respectively. Their tracheas were intubated immediately after birth because of severe respiratory distress. The babies were laid in the prone position and one of them was managed with high frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFO) for prevention of pulmonary barotrauma and extensive atelectasis in

A study of fetal macrosomia.

We describe the maternal characteristics in pregnancy with fetal macrosomia, fetal and maternal complications related to macrosomia, and the risk of impaired glucose tolerance. The study is based on a comparison of maternal and neonatal data in 956 cases of fetal macrosomia (birthweight > or =4000 g) in non-diabetic pregnancy with data in a control group of 6407 mothers with non-macrosomic infants (birthweight 3000-3999 g). The main factors investigated were maternal age, weight, parity, gestosis rate, maternal and fetal birth injuries, maternal oral glucose tolerance test results and umbilica

The protective role of bilirubin in oxygen-radical diseases of the preterm infant.

We hypothesized that because bilirubin is a potent free-radical quencher, infants without disorders that have oxygen-radical disease (ORD)-mediated mechanisms may have higher bilirubin levels than infants suffering from conditions possibly associated with ORD-mediated mechanisms (e.g., necrotizing enterocolitis, broncopulmonary dysplasia, intraventricular hemorrhage, and retinopathy of prematurity). We identified 25 infants (birth weight 912 +/- 208 gm, gestational age 27 +/- 3 weeks) who comprised the ORD group and compared them with 57 controls (birth weight 1242 +/- 248 gm, gestational age

Outcome of pregnancy in women treated at an alcohol clinic.

The studies in man concerning foetal alcohol damage have mostly covered skid row female alcoholics, and no study has described the outcome of pregnancy of a larger group of women receiving inpatient care for alcoholism. In another study we have described the medical and social characteristics of such a group (n = 92) of women, as well as those of an age-matched control group. This article reports retrospectively on the pregnancies and the infants of these women. The pregnancies and deliveries were normal in both groups. There was no significant difference in rate of stillbirths, neonatal morta

Perinatal Factors Associated With Congenital Hypothyroidism in Very Low Birth Weight Infants: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

This retrospective cohort study analyzed perinatal risk factors for congenital hypothyroidism (CH) in 1073 very low birth weight (VLBW) infants (<1500 g) admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit. The overall CH incidence was 6.0% (65 cases), with significantly higher rates in extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants (11.1%) and extremely preterm infants <28 weeks' gestation (11.3%). Multivariate analysis identified maternal thyroid disease (odds ratio [OR]: 2.12, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.10-4.12) and patent ductus arteriosus (OR: 2.25, 95% CI: 1.33-3.79) as independent risk factors,

Fetal Loss and Preterm Birth Caused by Intraamniotic Haemophilus influenzae Infection, New Zealand.

Invasive Haemophilus influenzae infection during pregnancy can cause preterm birth and fetal loss, but the mechanism is unclear. We investigated 54 cases of pregnancy-associated invasive H. influenzae disease in 52 unique pregnancies in the Auckland region of New Zealand during October 1, 2008‒September 30, 2018. Intraamniotic infection was identified in 36 (66.7%) of 54 cases. Outcome data were available for 48 pregnancies. Adverse pregnancy outcomes, defined as fetal loss, preterm birth, or the birth of an infant requiring intensive/special care unit admission, occurred in 45 (93.8%) of 48 (

Outcome and Associated Factors of Neonatal Surgeries at University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia, A 7-Year Period.

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal surgery is complex and time-sensitive, with a narrow margin for error. While neonatal surgical conditions account for approximately 11% of the global disease burden, data on their impact in Ethiopia remains limited. METHODS: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital by reviewing medical records of 268 neonates who underwent surgery between 2017 and 2023. Data were analyzed using Stata version 14. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify predictors of mortality. Statistical significan

Dexterity of the Less Affected Hand in Children With Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy.

BACKGROUND: To determine if the "unaffected" hand in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy (CP) is truly unaffected. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of manual dexterity as measured by the Functional Dexterity Test (FDT) in 66 children (39 boys, 27 girls, mean age: 11 years 4 months) with hemiplegic CP. Data were stratified by Manual Ability Classification System (MACS) level, birth weight, and gestational age at birth, and compared with previously published normative values. RESULTS: The FDT speed of the less affected hand is significantly lower than typically developing (TD)

Management of nasopharyngeal teratomas associated with cleft palate.

Nasopharyngeal teratomas are rare tumours, responsible for a high birth mortality rate from acute respiratory distress. Palatine localization can lead to an embryopathogenic mechanical obstacle responsible for a cleft palate. The aim of this study was to update current knowledge concerning the management of this rare pathological association. We conducted a multicentre, retrospective study by case analysis. The inclusion criteria were patients of any age under care for a nasopharyngeal teratoma associated with a velopalatine cleft. The diagnosis of the teratoma was confirmed by histological an

Parity Conditions the Risk for Low Birth Weight after Maternal Exposure to Air Pollution.

Multiparous mothers have greater umbilical blood flow and thus more efficient transport of pollutants than primiparous mothers. We tested a hypothesis that multiparous mothers are more prone to have an infant with low birth weight (LBW) after prenatal exposure to air pollution. A study was conducted on a representative group of more than 74,000 singleton, live, full-term infants. Birth data were obtained from the birth registry, while pollution data were from an environmental monitoring system (Poland). Multiple comparisons were controlled by the false discovery rate procedure (FDR). After sta

Effect of parental physiological conditions and assisted reproductive technologies on the pregnancy and birth outcomes in infertile patients.

Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) are widely used to treat infertility. Emerging evidence suggested that ART was associated with perinatal or neonatal problems, however, little is known about the ART related risk factors. Here using 21136 ART cases, we determined the impacts of parental physiological conditions in the ART mediated pregnancy outcomes. In addition, we further evaluated the effects of three different ART methods (frozen-thawed embryo transfer [FET], in vitro fertilization [IVF] and intracytoplasmic sperm injection [ICSI]) in the pregnancy and birth outcomes in ART mediated
