Three millennia of lizard and snake consumption by Natufian foragers.

Squamate (lizard and snake) exploitation provides a rarely documented window into human dietary flexibility at the end of the Pleistocene. This study analyzes over three millennia of squamate remains from el-Wad Terrace (Israel), revealing that large-bodied snakes and lizards formed a substantial and consistent part of Natufian subsistence. Repeated evidence of butchery on snake vertebrae indicates regular consumption across all occupation phases. Shifts in squamate abundance and bone modification patterns correspond to shifts in site-use intensity and the relative contribution of human and an

Metabolic and body composition alterations in normal-weight adults with prediabetes: A DEXA-based analysis.

INTRODUCTION: This study examines clinical, biochemical, and body composition differences between healthy and prediabetic normal-weight individuals (BMI 18.5-24.9 kg/m²), with a focus on central fat distribution. METHODS: Sixty participants (30 prediabetic, 30 healthy) underwent clinical evaluations, including body composition analysis using DEXA. RESULTS: • Women: Multivariate regression analysis demonstrated that the android-to-gynoid fat ratio remained an independent and significant predictor of prediabetes (p = 0.014). • Men: GFR and creatinine levels were significantly impaired (p = 0.0

Comparative assessment of growth performance and meat quality in Water Hyacinth and antibiotic (growth promoter) supplemented broilers.

The use of growth promoters in broiler feed is a common practice to enhance feed efficiency and accelerate growth rates. Ciprofloxacin, a widely used antibiotic in poultry farming, promotes growth and disease prevention but raises concerns about antibiotic residues in meat and the development of antibiotic resistance. This study examines the dietary effects of WH and ciprofloxacin on broiler growth rate, feed conversion ratio (FCR), meat quality, and muscle histology. Ninety broilers were randomly assigned to one of three groups: a control group, a WH-supplemented group (2.5% of daily feed), a

Age-dependent impairment of cardiac function and physical performance in male mice with diet-induced obesity.

Aging in the context of obesity exacerbates the risk of morbidity and mortality related to cardiovascular disease. However, the maladaptive responses in the heart that arise from prolonged obesity and the specific influence of biological age remain somewhat elusive. This study investigated the effects of diet-induced obesity (DIO) and aging on physical performance and cardiovascular function in mice. 22- and 76-week-old male C57BL/6J mice were randomized to 8 weeks of chow or high-fat diet. Body weight was assessed weekly. Body composition was measured at the beginning and the end of the diet

Economic connectivity and clustering: The influence of social connections on maternal and infant health.

Recent influential work in the US finds that bridging capital (i.e., friendships across socioeconomic strata) appears to increase upward economic mobility over the life course. Examinations of the role of these social connections on health, however, remain relatively unexplored. We exploit a recent effort which made publicly available ZIP-level measures of bridging capital and bonding capital (i.e., depth of friend networks within the same stratum) using Facebook information on >70 million Americans. We test in California (8 million births; California Birth Cohort File 2005 to 2021) the relati

Metabolism disrupting effects in human pre-adipocytes: Influence of donor sex and body composition.

There is growing attention on the global, worsening rates of metabolic disorders, including obesity. Numerous attempted interventions have provided only modest effects, with current rates of obesity in the United States remaining high (e.g., 42.4 % of adults and 8.9 % of infants and toddlers). Metabolism-disrupting chemicals (MDCs) are one proposed causal factor and are chemicals that can disrupt adipocyte development and differentiation in vitro and/or metabolism in vivo (e.g., increased weight, adipose). High costs prohibit comprehensive rodent screening for MDCs, necessitating the use of in

In Vivo Evaluation of ZnAg3-A New Bioabsorbable Material in Fracture Treatment Compared to Biodegradable Mg Alloys.

Permanent implants, which are primarily used to treat fractures, are either removed during a subsequent procedure or remain in the body after being surgically inserted. Bioabsorbable implants are designed to be reabsorbed by the body, minimizing the risk of chronic infections or foreign body reactions. The qualification of a novel zinc-silver alloy containing 3.3 wt% silver (ZnAg3) as a bioabsorbable implant was investigated in this in vivo study on New Zealand white rabbits. The osteointegration of ZnAg3 pins and MAGNEZIX pins, which served as controls, was evaluated histomorphometrically and

Ingestion of foreign bodies and caustic substances in children: a narrative review on clinical evaluation and management update.

The ingestion of foreign bodies and caustic substances represents a significant clinical concern in pediatric populations, particularly among children aged 1-5 years. These events can result in a wide spectrum of complications ranging from acute, life-threatening emergencies to delayed sequelae with long-term morbidities. The severity and clinical course are influenced by multiple factors, including ingested material's nature, size, shape, and chemical composition, as well as its anatomical location, particularly when esophageal impaction occurs. High-risk foreign bodies- such as button batter

Anti-sarcopenic effects of active vitamin D through modulation of anabolic and catabolic signaling pathways in human skeletal muscle: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The muscle-building and strengthening effects of the active form of vitamin D in humans remain unclear. METHODS: In this ancillary study of the Diabetes Prevention with active Vitamin D trial, we examined clinical and experimental aspects to investigate the effects and mechanisms of eldecalcitol, an active form of vitamin D, in preventing sarcopenia. We examined changes in molecules involved in muscle synthesis and degradation pathways in muscle samples from 32 participants before and after 1 year of eldecalcitol or placebo treatment. The protein levels of molecules involved in mu

Penetrating Sphenoid Sinus Injuries in Children: A Comprehensive Literature Review.

Penetrating foreign bodies in the pediatric sphenoid sinus are exceptionally rare and pose significant diagnostic and surgical challenges due to the sinus's proximity to critical neurovascular structures. We present the case of an 11 year-old boy who sustained a penetrating injury from a 7 mm bullet that entered through the floor of the frontal sinus, traversed the ethmoid sinus, and lodged in the right sphenoid sinus near the carotid canal and optic nerve. Initial assessment revealed hemodynamic stability and no active bleeding or neurological deficits. Non-contrast computed tomography precis

Women in space: A review of known physiological adaptations and health perspectives.

Exposure to the spaceflight environment causes adaptations in most human physiological systems, many of which are thought to affect women differently from men. Since only 11.5% of astronauts worldwide have been female, these issues are largely understudied. The physiological nuances affecting the female body in the spaceflight environment remain inadequately defined since the last thorough published review on the subject. A PubMed literature search yielded over 2200 publications. Using NASA's 2014 review series 'The effects of sex and gender on adaptation to space' as a benchmark, we identifie
