Effect of natural extracts obtained from food industry by-products on nutritional quality and shelf life of chicken nuggets enriched with organic Zn and Se provided in broiler diet.

This study investigated the influence of an organic mineral-supplemented broiler diet on the quality of nuggets. The resulting chicken nuggets were enriched with inorganic and organic forms of Zn and Se. The nuggets were processed by incorporating extracts from food industry by-products (rosemary [RH and RL], hydroxytyrosol [HYT], pomegranate [P], grape [GS], and Harpagophytum [H]). The physiochemical, microbiological, and sensory characteristics of the chicken nuggets were evaluated over a 12-month period of frozen storage. The addition of natural extracts did not affect the pH, proximate com

Parenteral immunization of Salmonella Typhimurium ghosts with surface-displayed Escherichia coli flagellin enhancesTLR-5 mediated activation of immune responses that protect the chicken against Salmonella infection.

The present study investigates the enhancement of immunogenicity and protection efficacy of Salmonella Typhimurium ghosts surface-displayed with FliC against chicken salmonellosis. The membrane-anchored FliC is a potential TLR-5 agonist, delivers an essential adjuvant effect for the ghost vaccine candidate. The present ghost plasmid pJHL184 construct carries a convergent dual promoter system that has the temperature-dependent induction of the phage lysis gene E and the target antigen FliC at the same time. Under permissible conditions of temperatures, less than 30 °C at the presence of 20 mM l

Interaction Differences of the Avian Host-Specific Salmonella enterica Serovar Gallinarum, the Host-Generalist S. Typhimurium, and the Cattle Host-Adapted S. Dublin with Chicken Primary Macrophage.

Most Salmonella serovars cause disease in many host species, while a few serovars have evolved to be host specific. Very little is known about the mechanisms that contribute to Salmonella host specificity. We compared the interactions between chicken primary macrophages (CDPM) and host-generalist serovar Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, host-adapted Salmonella enterica serovar Dublin, and avian host-specific Salmonella enterica serovar Gallinarum. S Gallinarum was taken up in lower numbers by CDPM than S Typhimurium and S Dublin; however, a higher survival rate was observed for this se

Salmonella isolated from chicken carcasses from a slaughterhouse in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil: antibiotic resistance profile, serotyping, and characterization by repetitive sequence-based PCR system.

Salmonella is one of the major causative agents of foodborne infections. Salmonellosis becomes more dangerous when strains resistant to several antibiotics are found in food, especially in chicken, one of the primary transmission vehicles of this pathogen for humans. The present study aimed to estimate the occurrence of Salmonella in chicken carcasses from the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil, as well as determine the antibiotic resistance profile and genotypic characteristic of multi-drug resistant (MDR) isolates. During a 15-month period, from 01/2014 to 05/2015, 850 samples of chilled fresh chi

Utility of Combining Whole Genome Sequencing with Traditional Investigational Methods To Solve Foodborne Outbreaks of Salmonella Infections Associated with Chicken: A New Tool for Tackling This Challenging Food Vehicle.

High consumption rates and a multitude of brands make multistate foodborne outbreaks of Salmonella infections associated with chicken challenging to investigate, but whole genome sequencing is a powerful tool that can be used to assist investigators. Whole genome sequencing of pathogens isolated from clinical, environmental, and food samples is increasingly being used in multistate foodborne outbreak investigations to determine with unprecedented resolution how closely related these isolates are to one another genetically. In 2014, federal and state health officials investigated an outbreak of

Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) stimulates cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript gene (CART1) expression through CRH type 1 receptor (CRHR1) in chicken anterior pituitary.

Cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) peptide(s) is generally viewed as neuropeptide(s) and can control food intake in vertebrates, however, our recent study revealed that CART1 peptide is predominantly expressed in chicken anterior pituitary, suggesting that cCART1 peptide is a novel pituitary hormone in chickens and its expression is likely controlled by hypothalamic factor(s). To test this hypothesis, in this study, we examined the spatial expression of CART1 in chicken anterior pituitary and investigated the effect of hypothalamic corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) on pit

Beak condition and cage density determine abundance and spatial distribution of northern fowl mites, Ornithonyssus sylviarum, and chicken body lice, Menacanthus stramineus, on caged laying hens.

Adult White Leghorn hens (Hy-Line strain W-36) were inoculated with either northern fowl mites or chicken body lice, and the ectoparasite populations were monitored over periods of 9 to 16 wk. Two beak conditions (beak trimmed or beak intact) and 2 housing densities (1 or 2 hens per 25 × 31 cm suspended wire cage) were tested. Populations of both ectoparasites were at least 10 times lower on beak-intact hens compared with populations on beak-trimmed hens. Cage density did not influence mite numbers, but higher numbers of lice (2 to 3 times) developed on hens held at the higher cage density. Lo

Identification of the chicken growth hormone-releasing hormone receptor (GHRH-R) mRNA and gene: regulation of anterior pituitary GHRH-R mRNA levels by homologous and heterologous hormones.

GHRH stimulates GH secretion in chickens as in mammals. However, nothing is known about the chicken GHRH receptor (GHRH-R). Here we report the cDNA sequence of chicken GHRH-R. Comparison of the cDNA sequence with the chicken genome localized the GHRH-R gene to chicken chromosome 2 and indicated that the chicken GHRH-R gene consists of 13 exons. Expression of all exons was confirmed by RT-PCR amplification of pituitary mRNA. The amino acid sequence predicted by the GHRH-R cDNA is homologous to that in other vertebrates and contains seven transmembrane domains and a conserved hormone-binding dom

Isolation, identification and characterization of group A rotavirus from a chicken: the inner capsid protein sequence shows only a distant phylogenetic relationship to most other avian group A rotaviruses.

Rotavirus particles were identified in the intestinal content of a 35-day-old stunted chicken. The virus was isolated, RNA pattern was analysed and the viral genome segment 6 was sequenced. In particular, the sequence data showed a very close similarity to the chicken rotavirus isolate Ch-1 (99.2% amino acid homology), this is distantly related to all known avian rotaviruses and supports the existence of different VP6 types amongst avian group A rotaviruses.

wecB Gene of Salmonella Gallinarum Plays a Critical Role in Systemic Infection of Fowl Typhoid.

Salmonella enterica serovar Gallinarum (S. Gallinarum) is a host-specific pathogen causing fowl typhoid, a severe systemic infection in poultry, which leads to substantial economic losses due to high morbidity and mortality in many developing countries. However, less is known about the pathogenic characteristics and mechanism of S. Gallinarum-induced systemic infection in chickens. In this study, we deleted the S. Gallinarum UDP-N-acetylglucosamine-1-phosphate transferase gene, which contributes to the biosynthesis of enterobacterial common antigen (ECA), and studied the pathogenicity of this

Development and evaluation of a multi-epitope subunit vaccine against Mycoplasma synoviae infection.

Mycoplasma synoviae is an extremely significant avian pathogen, causing substantial financial harm to poultry farmers worldwide, and impacting both chicken and turkey production. Multi-epitope vaccines offer higher immunity and lower allergenicity compared to conventional vaccines. In this study, our objective is to develop a multi-epitope vaccine for M. synoviae (MSMV) and to evaluate the immune responses and protective efficacy of MSMV in chickens. We successfully identified a total of 14 B-cell, 5 MHC-I, and 16 MHC-II binding epitopes from the immunodominant proteins RS01790, BMP, GrpE, RS0

Research Note: Intestinal morphology and gene expression changes in broilers supplemented with lysolecithin.

Lysolecithin is used as a feed additive to aid fat digestion and absorption in broiler chickens. Previous research has shown that dietary fat source influences how broilers respond to lysolecithin supplementation. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the effect of lysolecithin on a diet formulated with soybean oil on jejunum morphology and expression of selected genes in broiler chickens. Male Cobb 500 chickens were fed a Control diet or the Control diet supplemented with lysolecithin (TRT) from day of hatch to day 28. Jejunal samples were collected at day 10 for morpholog

Molecular and serological prevalence of influenza A viruses in poultry and poultry farmers in the Ashanti region, Ghana.

For an analysis of the prevalence of influenza A viruses (IAVs) circulating in chickens and their farmers in the Ashanti region, Ghana, we examined 2,400 trachea and cloaca swabs (chickens) and 102 oropharyngeal swabs (farmers) by qRT-PCR. Sera from 1,200 (chickens) and 102 (farmers) were analysed for IAV antibodies by ELISA and haemagglutination inhibition (HI). Avian influenza virus (AIV) was detected in 0.2% (n = 5) of chickens but not farmers. Virus detection was more pronounced in the cloacal (n = 4, 0.3%) than in tracheal swabs (n = 1, 0.1%). AIV antibodies were not detected in chickens.

[Methods of analgesia and euthanasia in backyard poultry].

The keeping of chickens in the backyard is growing in popularity in urban and suburban areas, numbers of animals are increasing and as a result small animal practitioners are more and more frequently faced with chickens as patient. Clinical conditions in backyard poultry often require the treatment of pain. The challenges regarding the adequate use of analgesics include: 1. Recognition and assessment of pain, which necessitates good knowledge of chicken behaviour, 2. Selection of the adequate drug and dosage based on evidence that is often not available for chickens, but spread over different

Effects of novel vaccine/adjuvant complexes on the protective immunity against Eimeria acervulina and transcriptome profiles.

SUMMARY. This study investigated the ability of two novel adjuvant formulations, QCDC (Quil A/cholesterol/DDA/ Carbopol) and QCDCR (QCDC/Bay R1005), in combination with a recombinant profilin vaccine, to modulate host protective immunity and to alter gene expression during experimental avian coccidiosis. Vaccination with profilin plus QCDCR significantly reduced the severity of intestinal lesions and increased mitogen-induced lymphocyte proliferation in infected chickens compared with immunization with profilin alone or profilin plus QCDC. Immunization with profilin plus QCDC or profilin plus

Broad dissemination of Histomonas meleagridis determined by the detection of nucleic acid in different organs after experimental infection of turkeys and specified pathogen-free chickens using a mono-eukaryotic culture of the parasite.

Histomonas meleagridis, a flagellated protozoan parasite, is the causative agent of histomonosis (syn. histomoniasis, blackhead) in turkeys and chickens. The organs primarily affected by the parasite are the caeca and the liver. Until now, only few reports exist in which the parasite has been diagnosed in tissues other than those mentioned above. Hence, the aim of this study was to perform a systematic investigation of various organs of turkeys and specified pathogen-free chickens following an experimental infection with a mono-eukaryotic culture of Histomonas meleagridis in order to determine
