[Neonatal presentation of Prader-Willi syndrome: A report of five cases].

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a fingerprint disease caused by the loss of paternally inherited chromosome 15q11.2-q13. In several populations studied, prevalence is estimated to be from 1/10,000 to 1/25,000 births. The disease initially manifests by neonatal hypotonia associated with orality disorders. Secondly, hyperphagia appears with significant obesity and hypogonadism. Motor milestones and language development are delayed, and all individuals have variable degrees of cognitive disability during childhood. Frequently, the most prominent features do not become evident until the later child

Strategies for increasing adolescent immunizations in diverse ethnic communities.

PURPOSE: We sought to identify attitudes and knowledge of adolescent vaccination recommendations for tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis (Tdap); quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate (MCV4); and human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines among Hispanic, Somali, and Ethiopian/Eritrean communities in King County, Washington. METHODS: In-person surveys of Hispanic, Somali, and Ethiopian/Eritrean adolescents (n = 45) and parents of adolescents (n = 157), and three focus groups with mothers of 11- to 18-year-olds were conducted to assess knowledge, attitudes, and barriers related to recommended a

Strabismus surgery before versus after completion of amblyopia therapy in children.

BACKGROUND: Normal visual development occurs when the brain is able to integrate the visual input from each of the two eyes to form a single three-dimensional image. The process of development of complete three-dimensional vision begins at birth and is almost complete by 24 months of age. The development of this binocular vision is hindered by any abnormality that prevents the brain from receiving a clear, similar image from each eye, due to decreased vision (e.g. amblyopia), or due to misalignment of the two eyes (strabismus or squint) in infancy and early childhood. Currently, practice patte

Parent and professional perspectives on behavioral inflexibility in autism spectrum disorders: A qualitative study.

Restricted and repetitive behaviors are a core feature of autism spectrum disorder; however, research on the functional impact of these behaviors on the quality of life for individuals with autism spectrum disorder and their families remains scarce. We conducted focus groups with parents of children with autism spectrum disorder and clinicians in order to better characterize the functional impact of behavioral inflexibility, which represents one potential dimensional construct that could account for the breadth of behaviors comprising the restricted and repetitive behavior domain. Is children's listening effort in background noise influenced by the speaker's voice quality?

The present study aims at exploring the influence of voice quality on listening effort in children performing a language comprehension test with sentences of increasing difficulty. Listening effort is explored in relation to gender ( = cisgender). The study has a between-groups design. Ninety-three mainstreamed children aged 8;2 to 9;3 with typical language development participated. The children were randomly assigned to two groups (n = 46/47) with equal allocation of boys and girls and for the analysis to four groups depending of gender and voice condition. Working memory capacity and executi

Differences in speech and language abilities between children with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome and children with phenotypic features of 22q11.2 deletion syndrome but without microdeletion.

BACKGROUND: 22q11.2DS is the most common microdeletion syndrome in humans, usually associated with speech and language delay (SLD). Approximately 75% of children with 22q11.2 microdeletion have congenital heart malformations (CHM) which after infant open-heart surgery might lead to SLD. AIMS: The purpose of this study was to determine whether factors associated with microdeletion contribute to SLD in children with 22q11.2DS. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: We compared speech and language abilities of two groups of school-aged children: those with 22q11.2 microdeletion (E1) and those with the phenoty

An etiologic classification of autism spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) represent a common phenotype related to multiple etiologies, such as genetic, brain injury (e.g., prematurity), environmental (e.g., viral, toxic), multiple or unknown causes. OBJECTIVES: To devise a clinical classification of children diagnosed with ASD according to etiologic workup. METHODS: Children diagnosed with ASD (n = 436) from two databases were divided into groups of symptomatic cryptogenic or idiopathic, and variables within each database and diagnostic category were compared. RESULTS: By analyzing the two separate databases, 5.4% of th

[Gonosomal trisomy syndrome. Five case reports and review of literature].

Gonosomal trisomies (GT) or so called sex chromosome trisomies (SCTs) are the most common chromosomal abnormalities in humans. The addition of extra X and/or Y chromosomes leads to neurodevelopmental differences, with increased risk for developmental delays, cognitive impairments, executive dysfunction, and behavioural and psychological disorders. Attentional problems, hyperactivity, autistic spectrum disorders and impulsivity are commonly described. Rates of language and communication problems are high in all 3 trisomies. Especially in cases of language impairment ENT specialists may be the m

[Developmental amnesia in the premature infant].

All types of memory disorders have been observed in children, although these reports are rare. Developmental amnesia selectively involves episodic daily life memory while semantic learning is respected and general intelligence is not affected. Daily life is severely disturbed by this cognitive disorder usually occurring after hypoxic ischemic injury with bilateral hippocampal atrophy on MRI. Memory disorders are underdiagnosed in at-risk patients and rarely reported. We report on a former small-for-gestational-age preterm infant with no obvious hypoxic event during perinatal life. Estimating the neurocognitive effects of an early intervention program for children with prenatal alcohol exposure.

BACKGROUND: Animal studies suggest that early intervention in pups exposed heavily to ethanol in utero can mitigate their neurocognitive damage. No human studies on this promising mechanism exists. METHODS: Breaking the Cycle is an early intervention program for drug-and alcohol addicted mothers and their young children. We compared BSID-III scores between infants heavily exposed to ethanol and a group exposed only to drugs of abuse, mainly cocaine. Both groups benefited from all aspects of our early intervention program. RESULTS: The two groups did not differ in any aspect of the BSID-III.

Validity of the aberrant behavior checklist in a clinical sample of toddlers.

We investigated the congruent and criterion validity of the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC) in a clinical sample of toddlers seen over 1 year in Turkey. All consecutive patients (N=93), 14-43 months old (mean, 30.6 mos.), in a child psychiatry outpatient clinic were included. The ABC, Autism Behavior Checklist (AuBC), and Child Behavior Checklist 2/3 (CBCL) were completed by the children's parents. Internal consistency for ABC subscales was moderate to high. The total ABC score, which is interdependent with subscales (e.g., Irritability, Social Withdrawal) of the ABC, was significantly corre

Cyclothymic temperament as a prospective predictor of bipolarity and suicidality in children and adolescents with major depressive disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Although several recent studies suggest that bipolar disorder most commonly begins during childhood or adolescence, the illness still remains under-recognized and under-diagnosed in this age group. As part of the French Bipolar network and in line with the hypothesis that juvenile depression is pre-bipolar , we evaluated the rate of onset of bipolar disorders in a naturalistic 2-year prospective study of consecutive, clinically depressed children and adolescents, and to test whether the cyclothymic temperament underlies such onset. METHODS: Complete information was obtained from

[Neuropsychological assessment of ADHD subtypes].

Starting from a discussion of the validity of neuropsychological methods for the diagnosis of ADHD the results of an own study are presented. What is the diagnostic value of the German version of the CPT (Continuous Performance Task) and the DAT (Dortmunder Aufmerksamkeitstest) in discriminating ADHD subtypes (according to DSM-IV) and in which areas do the children of each subtype differ from a control group of normal children? The computer versions of the CPT and DAT were administered to 14 boys with the "combined subtype" of ADHD, 14 boys with the "predominantly inattentive type" of ADHD and

Autism: in search of susceptibility genes.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder of unknown etiology. There is convincing data for the involvement of genetic factors in the development of autism, and the absence of any consistent evidence for an environmental, neuroanatomical, or biochemical cause has led to an increasing number of genetic studies to determine the basis of this complex disorder. The results of recent genetic linkage and candidate gene studies are reviewed in relation to the challenge of clinical and genetic heterogeneity, and prospects for the future of genetic research in autism are considered.

Summary of the qualitative criticisms made during the ICD-10 field trial and remarks on the German translation of ICD-10.

The 1987 draft of ICD-10 presents many new aspects of the psychiatric diagnostic evaluation. Some were readily accepted by the participants of the field study, including: the purely descriptive approach with the abautonment of many theoretical concepts; the more operationalized descriptions of the diagnoses; similarity in structure and terms to DSM-III-R. Others proved controversial: extension of the term dementia to include even mild and moderately severe organic psychosyndromes; inclusion of all forms of depression in one chapter, and their subdivisioning only by severity; different time cri

Autism spectrum disorder: does neuroimaging support the DSM-5 proposal for a symptom dyad? A systematic review of functional magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion tensor imaging studies.

A systematic review of 208 studies comprising functional magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion tensor imaging data in patients with 'autism spectrum disorder' (ASD) was conducted, in order to determine whether these data support the forthcoming DSM-5 proposal of a social communication and behavioral symptom dyad. Studies consistently reported abnormal function and structure of fronto-temporal and limbic networks with social and pragmatic language deficits, of temporo-parieto-occipital networks with syntactic-semantic language deficits, and of fronto-striato-cerebellar networks with repetiti

Clinical and genetic features of luscan-lumish syndrome associated with a novel de novo variant of SETD2 gene: Case report and literature review.

Introduction: Luscan-Lumish syndrome (LLS) is currently recognized as a rarely-observed condition featured with overgrowth, macrocephaly, obesity, type I Chiari malformation, and linguistic retardation. So far, there have been only a few LLS cases registered worldwide, but with none of them reported from China. To acquire a deeper understanding on the clinical and genetic features of this disease, a Chinese boy with LLS caused by a heterozygous variant in SETD2 gene was investigated in the present study. Methods: The patient was clinically examined and the medical history of his family was col
