Myopia and inflammation.

The correlation between myopia and intraocular inflammation has rarely been explored. The aim of this article is to review myopic changes induced by inflammatory diseases and inflammatory diseases related to myopia, followed by a discussion on inflammatory choroidal neovascularization. Clinical cases are used to illustrate these conditions. The review does not include inflammatory conditions caused by surgical interventions employed for treatment of myopia. Uveitic conditions that can induce a myopic shift include sclero-choroidal inflammation, lens induced myopia due to steroid cataracts, juv

Diagnostic Value of Ocular Hemodynamics and Choroidal Thickness in Unilateral Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss: Non-Invasive Biomarkers of Systemic Microvascular Disease.

Background/Objectives: Although vascular mechanisms are increasingly implicated in the etiology of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL), the inability to directly visualize the labyrinthine artery remains a diagnostic obstacle. Sharing embryological and physiological parallels with the inner ear, the eye represents an accessible surrogate organ capable of reflecting systemic microvascular status. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic value of ocular hemodynamic and structural parameters in patients with acute unilateral idiopathic SSNHL. Methods: This prospective, comparative, cross

Caffeine Mitigates Adenosine-Mediated Angiogenic Properties of Choroidal Endothelial Cells Through Antagonism of A1 Adenosine Receptor and PI3K-AKT Axis.

Aging reduces the tissue regenerative capacity, promotes chronic inflammation, and contributes to neurodegenerative diseases, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD is a leading cause of vision loss in older adults and manifests as dry (atrophic) or wet (neovascular) disease. Although dry AMD is more prevalent, neovascular AMD (nAMD) causes the most severe vision impairment and remains a major public health burden. Oxidative stress-mediated inflammation and dysfunction of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells and choriocapillaris drive early AMD. Neovascular AMD is marked by pa

Effects of Intravitreal Methotrexate Injection on Choroidal Structure in Intraocular Malignant Lymphoma and Identification of Prognostic Factors for Central Nervous System Lymphoma Development.

Background: Vitreoretinal lymphoma (VRL) often presents with features resembling uveitis and is commonly associated with central nervous system lymphoma (CNSL). Intravitreal methotrexate (IVMTX) is widely used as local therapy; however, objective markers for treatment response and prognosis remain limited. This study investigated choroidal structural changes after IVMTX via enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) and explored prognostic indicators for subsequent CNSL development. Methods: This retrospective study included 18 patients (27 eyes) with VRL treated with IVMTX

Altered glymphatic function in nasopharyngeal carcinoma following radiotherapy: novel insights from choroid plexus volume and free-water fraction analyses.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Radiotherapy (RT) often causes delayed radiation-induced brain injury (RBI) with unclear pathophysiology; emerging evidence links this to glymphatic dysfunction, but radiation effects on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics and interstitial fluid-CSF exchange are unstudied. Thus, we used choroid plexus (CP) volume and free-water fraction (FWF) imaging to assess glymphatic changes in Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients after RT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional cohort of 101 NPC patients (45 pre-RT and 56 post-RT) underwent 3 T MRI, including T1-weighted

Optic disc parameters and choroidal vascular index as potential risk indicators in non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Although previous research has explored the involvement of the choroid in the pathogenesis of non- arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION), the relationship between optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) findings and choroidal features remains unclear. An understanding of this relationship may help clarify the vascular mechanisms underlying this disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between OCTA and choroidal parameters in patients with NAION during the post-acute phase, after the resolution of optic disc oedema. METHODS: This r

Age-associated oncocytic transformation correlates with an increased prevalence of small multiple Biondi body inclusions in human choroid plexus epithelial cells.

The choroid plexus epithelial cells (CPECs) at the blood-cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) interface possess an exceptionally high mitochondrial content to support CNS homeostasis. Oncocytic CPECs (O-CPECs), characterized by enlarged and granular eosinophilic cytoplasm composed of excessive abnormal mitochondria, likely contribute to an energetic failure of this energy-demanding tissue. The relationship between O-CPECs and other CPEC pathologies in humans, such as Biondi body (BB) amyloid inclusions, remains poorly defined. In the present study, using H&E-stained sections from 68 postmortem cases, we

Free water-mediated associations among choroid plexus enlargement, white matter lesions, and cognitive performance in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies indicate choroid plexus (CP) enlargement and glymphatic-related brain fluid changes in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), but how these alterations relate to white matter hyperintensities (WMH) and cognitive impairment in T2DM remains unclear. METHODS: This study comprised a total of 104 patients diagnosed with T2DM along with 56 healthy controls, who underwent brain MRI and neuropsychological assessment. CP volume, free water (FW) fraction, perivascular space (PVS) volume, and WMH volumes were quantified. Within the T2DM group, the relationship among imaging markers,

High resolution multi-delay arterial spin labeling with self-supervised deep learning denoising for pediatric choroid plexus perfusion MRI.

Choroid plexus (CP) is an important brain structure that produces cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). CP perfusion has been studied using multi-delay arterial spin labeling (MD-ASL) in adults but not in pediatric populations due to the challenge of small CP size in children. Here we present a high resolution (iso2 mm) MDASL protocol with 10-minute scan time and performed test-retest scans on 21 typically developing children aged 8 to 17 years. We further proposed a Transformer-based deep learning (DL) model with k-space weighted image average (KWIA) denoised images as reference for training the model.

Biomanufacturing and Curcumin-Loading of Human Choroid Plexus Organoid-Derived Extracellular Vesicles from a Vertical-Wheel Bioreactor to Alleviate Neuro-Inflammation.

Background: Choroid plexus is a complex structure in the human brain that is responsible for the secretion of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in cerebrospinal fluid. Few studies to date have generated choroid plexus (ChP) organoids differentiated from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) and analyzed their secreted EVs. The scalable Vertical-Wheel bioreactors (VWBRs) provide low shear stress and a controlled environment. Methods: This study utilized VWBRs for the differentiation of hiPSCs into ChP organoids and generation of the secreted EVs compared to a static culture. Additionally, th
