BACKGROUND: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is often considered low risk, yet growing evidence suggests that outcomes may differ by sex, and when explored, also by gender. We examined sex-associated differences in structural injury, acute-care complications, and neuropsychiatric diagnoses for patients with mTBI.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used the TriNetX Global Health Research Network to identify adults (≥18 years) diagnosed with mTBI (Glasgow Coma Scale 13-15) between 2010 and 2022. Patients were identified using ICD-10 codes (S06, S09, R40.2411-R40.2413), with exclusion of

BACKGROUND: Methanol is a toxic alcohol found in many industrial products. Ingestion can cause severe metabolic acidosis, optic nerve damage, and central nervous system depression. While bilateral putaminal necrosis is a typical radiologic finding, pseudo-subarachnoid hemorrhage (pseudo-SAH) is a rare and often misdiagnosed complication. Prompt recognition is essential to avoid unnecessary interventions.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 31-year-old Caucasian Iranian male presented unresponsive after consuming 1-2 L of homemade methanol. He experienced cardiac arrest upon arrival but was successfully resu

BACKGROUND: Patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) occupy an important place in intensive care units (ICUs) with high morbidity and mortality rates. The aim of this study was to determine the parameters predictive of mortality as the primary outcome and the distribution of these parameters as a secondary outcome in patients admitted to the ICU with TBI.
METHODS: After ethics committee approval and informed consent of the patient's relatives, TBI patients over 18 years of age treated in the anesthesia and reanimation ICU of our hospital between 2021 and 2023 were retrospectively included i

PURPOSE: Mild traumatic brain injury accounts for roughly 55 million trauma cases globally each year. However, diagnosis and management remain challenging as conventional methods like cranial CT and the Glasgow Coma Scale do not reliably detect subtle neurological impairments. Quantitative Pupillometry has shown promise in severe traumatic brain injury, but data on its use in mild traumatic brain injury is limited. This study aims to evaluate whether Quantitative Pupillometry can detect subtle neurological dysfunction in patients with mild traumatic brain injury.
METHODS: We retrospectively a

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography perfusion (CTP) of the brain, are increasingly being employed for the assessment of critically ill patients admitted to intensive care units (ICU), including comatose cardiac arrest patients (CCAP). The purpose of our study was to validate the use of CTP in predicting in-hospital mortality in CCAPs.
METHOD: This prospective cohort study enrolled newly admitted adult CCAP, with an out of hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) and were scheduled for admission to the ICU for further management. Just before ICU admission, CCAP underwent a routine CT scan of the head and CT

INTRODUCTION: External ventricular drains (EVDs) are used in the management of spontaneous intraparenchymal haemorrhage (ICH) to divert cerebrospinal fluid and reduce intracranial pressure. Despite being a recognised treatment, there remains a lack of data on outcomes after surgery.
METHODS: Data was collected for all EVDs inserted from 2010 to 2022 at a tertiary neurosurgery centre in Sydney. Baseline demographic, clinical and radiological parameters were identified. Multivariate logistical regression analyses were conducted to determine factors significantly associated with higher mortality

BACKGROUND: A key limitation of the IMPACT model for prognostication after severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the use of predictors from hospital admission only. We sought to identify if including daily blood labs (e.g., glucose, sodium, platelets, hemoglobin) and other vitals (e.g., heart rate, mean arterial pressure [MAP], partial pressure of carbon dioxide [PaCO2]) for the first 2 weeks post-severe TBI improves prognostication compared to the IMPACT model alone.
METHODS: This is a secondary analysis of a prospectively collected database of patients from a single level 1 trauma center b

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Ground-level falls have become the leading cause of head injury in older adults. However, the risk factors for traumatic intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) in this population remain unclear. We aimed to identify risk factors for traumatic ICH in older patients who sustained a ground-level fall-related head injury presenting in the emergency department.
METHODS: A systematic search of Medline (Ovid), Embase (Embase.com), Cochrane Library (Wiley), CINAHL (EBSCO), and Web of Science Core Collection was performed on December 9, 2024. The studies' eligibility criteria included patients

BACKGROUND: There is minimal literature on the outcomes of acute traumatic subdural hematoma (SDH) in patients 90 years of age or older. This study aims to characterize the presentation and acute outcomes of patients in this population, particularly for surgical candidates.
METHODS: Patients 90 years of age or older with acute SDH between 2013-2023 were analyzed (n = 117). Multivariable binomial logistic regression assessed associations with favorable outcome, defined as a discharge to a non-hospice facility with a Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) of 14 or greater. Nominal data was analyzed via Wilco

OBJECTIVE: The Brain Injury Guidelines (BIG) categorize patients with mild, moderate, and severe traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). We examined whether TBI transfer guidelines should be modified to incorporate BIG alongside polytrauma and patient frailty assessments to identify which patients are most likely to benefit from transfer.
METHODS: Patients ≥ 18 years old transferred to our Level 1 trauma center in 2019-2023 with nonpenetrating blunt cranial trauma were identified retrospectively. BIG scores were calculated using presentation, injury, in-hospital, and follow-up characteristics.

BACKGROUND: The Cisternostomy is a novel surgical concept in the treatment of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), which can effectively drain the bloody cerebrospinal fluid from the skull base cistern, reduce the intracranial pressure, and improve the return of bone flap, but its preventive role in post-traumatic hydrocephalus (PTH) is unknow. The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether Cisternostomy prevents the occurrence of PTH in patients with moderate and severe TBI.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of clinical data of 86 patients with moderate and severe TBI from May 2019 to October

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: With improving life expectancy, the proportion of geriatric patients is steadily increasing in the population and traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the elderly is becoming a problem demanding increasing attention from the health community. We attempted to identify factors that correlate with the outcome (as measured by the Glasgow Outcome Scale [GOS]) in elderly patients with TBI and make a prognostic model.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective analysis of 220 consecutive TBI patients aged ≥60 years admitted at our hospital was performed. Data about demography, comorb
