Implementing a successful patient navigation program for follow-up colonoscopy: Lessons from the PRECISE study.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) screening using annual fecal immunochemical tests (FIT) is an effective strategy to reduce CRC incidence and mortality. However, nearly 50% of patients with abnormal FIT results fail to complete the necessary follow-up colonoscopy. Patient navigation (PN) can provide crucial support for colonoscopy completion. Despite PN's effectiveness, there is limited knowledge about its optimal implementation in community health settings. This manuscript presents lessons learned from a PN intervention, including successes, challenges, and recommendations, which are essen

Adolescent condom negotiation: a concept analysis and conceptual framework.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents are at risk of sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancies. Consistent condom use is effective in curbing the double burden of diseases and unplanned conceptions. Condom negotiation influences consistent condom use. However, a clear operational definition is lacking. This paper analyzes the concept of adolescent condom negotiation and examines its defining attributes, antecedents, and consequences to promote conceptual clarity and enhance sexual health research and practice. METHODS: Norris's (1982) concept clarification method guided this analysis. Th

Social Media Constructions of Alcohol as Emotional Coping and Social Connection in Ghana: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol is a leading contributor to disease and injury worldwide; yet, it remains embedded in cultural practices associated with pleasure, social connection, and emotional relief. While global research has documented both the epidemiological burden and the social meanings of drinking, little is known about how alcohol-related meanings are circulated and normalized within African social media environments. OBJECTIVE: This study explores how alcohol is represented in Ghanaian social media discourse, with particular attention to emotional coping, social interaction, and everyday well

Humanization of nursing care in hospitalized patients with non-communicable diseases: a phenomenological qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The inpatient care of patients with non-communicable chronic diseases (NCDs) often involves extended stays, where the human quality of nursing care is as relevant as the technical interventions. However, dehumanization in daily practice, manifested in impersonal routines, deficient communication, and inattention to the patient’s values, erodes trust and wellbeing. Guided by Jean Watson’s theory of human caring, this study explored the lived experiences of hospitalized patients in relation to nursing care in Mexican public hospitals. METHODS: A qualitative study using a hermeneutic-

Building citizen science intelligence for outbreak preparedness and response: a mixed-method study in nine countries to assess knowledge, readiness and feasibility.

INTRODUCTION: Citizen science (CS) is an emerging approach in public health to harness the collective intelligence of individuals to augment traditional scientific efforts. However, citizens' viewpoint, especially the hard-to-reach population, is lacking in current outbreak-related literature. We aim to understand the awareness, readiness and feasibility of outbreak-related CS, including digitally enabled CS, in low-income and middle-income countries. METHODS: This mixed-method study was conducted in nine countries between October 2022 and June 2023. Recruitment through civil society targeted

Accessing HIV services in Botswana: perspectives of men who have sex with men and other stakeholders.

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) represent an increasing number of new HIV infections in Botswana. Many in Botswana still hold discriminatory views against people who engage in same-sex practices. While it is well documented that stigma and discrimination undermine efforts to prevent HIV, the literature about the perception and experiences of discrimination against MSM in accessing HIV services in Botswana is scant. OBJECTIVE(S): In this study, we sought to explore the perception and experiences of discrimination against MSM to improve access to HIV services and reduce discriminati

A hybrid, effectiveness-implementation research study protocol targeting antenatal care providers to provide female genital mutilation prevention and care services in Guinea, Kenya and Somalia.

BACKGROUND: In settings with high prevalence of female genital mutilation (FGM), the health sector could play a bigger role in its prevention and care of women and girls who have undergone this harmful practice. However, ministries of health lack clear policies, strategic plans or dedicated funding to implement anti-FGM interventions. Along with limited relevant knowledge and skills to prevent the practice of FGM and care for girls and women living with FGM, health providers have limited interpersonal communication skills and self-efficacy, while some may have supportive attitudes towards FGM

The role of trust and health literacy in nurse-delivered point-of-care STI testing for pregnant women living with HIV, Tshwane District, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) during pregnancy result in neonatal morbidity and mortality, and may increase mother-to-child-transmission of HIV. Yet the World Health Organization's current syndromic management guidelines for STIs leaves most pregnant women undiagnosed and untreated. Point-of-care (POC) diagnostic tests for STIs can drastically improve detection and treatment. Though acceptable and feasible, poor medication adherence and re-infection due to lack of partner treatment threaten the programmatic effectiveness of POC diagnostic programmes. METHODS: To engender

A community-based One Health education program for disease risk mitigation at the human-animal interface.

The interface between humans, domestic animals, and wildlife has been implicated in the emergence of infectious diseases and the persistence of endemic human and animal diseases. For individuals who reside at this interface, particularly those in low-resource settings, the development of disease risk assessment and mitigation skills must be prioritized. Using a community engagement-One Health approach, we implemented a training program aimed at advancing these skills among agro-pastoralists living adjacent to conservation areas in South Africa. The program included professional development of

Improvement of survival in patients with melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers compared to patients without double cutaneous malignancies.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed how conventional top-down, expert-driven indicators often fail to align with local community realities, marginalising their perspectives, concerns, knowledge, and narratives. However, the limitations of pandemic-related and global health security indicators are not unique but reflect recurring patterns across major social metrics. In response, an alternative paradigm advocates for grassroots-inclusive approaches to developing indicators. Our objective is to assess how and why grassroots-inclusive approaches complement top-down approaches to develo

Complexities of emergency communication: clinicians' perceptions of communication challenges in a trilingual emergency department.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To understand the challenges that clinicians face in communicating with patients and other clinicians within a Hong Kong trilingual emergency department. BACKGROUND: Effective communication has long been recognised as fundamental to the delivery of quality health care, especially in high-risk and time-constrained environments such as emergency departments. The issue of effective communication is particularly relevant in Hong Kong emergency departments, due to the high volume of patients and the linguistic complexity of this healthcare context. In Hong Kong, emergency depa

Barriers and facilitators to patient- and family-centered care in the ICU: A qualitative study of multiple stakeholder perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Patient- and family-centered care (PFCC) aligns care with patients' and families' needs, values, and preferences. Although increasingly recognized in intensive care units (ICUs), implementation remains challenging due to the complex ICU environment. OBJECTIVES: To explore barriers and facilitators to ICU-PFCC from the perspectives of former ICU patients, family members, and ICU healthcare professionals. METHODS: Semi-structured focus groups with former ICU patients, family members, ICU nurses, nursing assistants and physicians from six hospitals in the Netherlands were conducted.

MarginView3D: Extending Novel 3D Surgical Pathology Reporting for Use in Invasive pT4 Thyroid Cancer and Other Surgical Oncologic Procedures.

BACKGROUND: The American Thyroid Association's most recent clinical practice guidelines include margin status as a key factor to estimate risk of recurrence. Unlike most thyroid cancers, the successful resection of invasive pT4 thyroid cancers necessitates the use of frozen section analysis (FSA). There is no standardized method for intraoperative surgical margin assessment. We developed a novel intraoperative workflow and software platform, MarginView3DTM (MV3D), to enhance the precision of FSA and improve surgical pathology reporting in head and neck cancer. Here, we demonstrate its use in i
