Increasing midtarsal joint stiffness reduces triceps surae metabolic costs in walking simulations but has little effect on total stance limb metabolic cost.

The human foot's arch is thought to be beneficial for efficient gait. This study addresses the extent to which arch stiffness changes alter the metabolic energy requirements of human gait. Computational musculoskeletal simulations of steady state walking using direct collocation were performed. Across a range of foot arch stiffnesses, the metabolic cost of transport decreased by less than 1% with increasing foot arch stiffness. Increasing arch stiffness increased the metabolic efficiency of the triceps surae during push-off, but these changes were almost entirely offset by other muscle groups

Surgery Requiring Detailed Preoperative Simulation and Scar De-epithelialization to Repair Severe Postoperative Scarring from Gastroschisis.

We present the case of a patient with severe postoperative scarring from surgical treatment for gastroschisis, with the intestine located immediately under the dermal scar. Although many patients are unsatisfied with the results of scar repair treatment, few reports exist regarding severe or difficult cases involving the surgical repair of postoperative scar contracture. We achieved an excellent result via simulation involving graph paper drawings that were generated using computed tomography images as a reference, followed by dermal scar deepithelialization. The strategy described here may be

Rescaled Local Interaction Simulation Approach for Shear Wave Propagation Modelling in Magnetic Resonance Elastography.

Properties of soft biological tissues are increasingly used in medical diagnosis to detect various abnormalities, for example, in liver fibrosis or breast tumors. It is well known that mechanical stiffness of human organs can be obtained from organ responses to shear stress waves through Magnetic Resonance Elastography. The Local Interaction Simulation Approach is proposed for effective modelling of shear wave propagation in soft tissues. The results are validated using experimental data from Magnetic Resonance Elastography. These results show the potential of the method for shear wave propaga

Model of a predatory stealth behaviour camouflaging motion.

A computational model of a stealth strategy inspired by the apparent mating tactics of male hoverflies is presented. The stealth strategy (motion camouflage) paradoxically allows a predator to approach a moving prey in such a way that it appears to be a stationary object. In the model, the predators are controlled by neural sensorimotor systems that base their decisions on realistic levels of input information. They are shown to be able to employ motion camouflage to approach prey that move along both real hoverfly flight paths and artificially generated flight paths. The camouflaged approache

Biophysics of the cochlea: linear approximation.

Several deficiencies affecting previous "box" models of the cochlea are overcome in this paper. Both mechanical and hydrodynamical aspects are treated at a level adequate to the complexity of realistic cochlear structures. The dynamics of the cochlea as a passive physical system, in the linear approximation, is described by an integral equation. It is further shown that this equation describes the properties of the working cochlea, provided a force term that accounts for hair cell motility is included. Numerical solutions for different degrees of outer hair cells activity, obtained by matrix m

CT evaluation of coverage and congruency of the hip prior to osteotomy.

A computer-assisted model has been developed to improve the results of surgical techniques for reconstruction of hip dysplasia. This method assesses the coverage and congruency of the femoral head by evaluating multiple factors that may influence surgical planning. It achieves a more reliable image because the measurements are based on a three-dimensional representation, and attention is focused on the cartilaginous coverage of the femoral head. A method to simulate the operative correction helps the surgeon in planning osteotomies of the femur and pelvis. This technique clearly establishes bo

Compound action potential and single acoustic nerve fibres activity generation: an equivalent neuron approach.

The peripheral acoustic system can be easily subdivided into three distinct subsystems: a mechanical one (middle ear and basilar membrane), the set of mechanical-to-neural transducers (the inner and outer hair cells) and the neural part. The functional behaviour of the external and middle ear is well known, but the processes concerned with the transduction of mechanical motion into neural activity are still under investigation. Actually the mechanism of transmission of information concerning acoustic stimuli to the central nervous pathways is not clearly known. On the basis of physiological kn

DSHARP: Deep Incompressible Motion Estimation With Sinusoidal-Transformed Harmonic Phase for Tagged MRI.

Tagged magnetic resonance imaging (tMRI) is a valuable tool for visualizing and quantifying tissue deformation in vivo. Its use is often hampered, however, by tag fading, long computation times, and the challenge of ensuring diffeomorphic, incompressible motion fields. In this paper, we describe a novel integration of the harmonic phase (HARP) approach to tMRI analysis with an unsupervised deep learning-based registration framework to estimate 2D and 3D motion fields that are diffeomorphic and nearly incompressible. The resulting method, called deep sinusoidally transformed HARP, or DSHARP, en

The neural mechanisms of aligning spatial perspectives.

Visual perspective-taking requires mentally adopting another spatial viewpoint by aligning one's own perspective with that of a reference, such as another person or object. This alignment process is thought to rely on embodied spatial transformations engaging both spatial computation and motor-related systems. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we tested whether neural responses scale with angular disparity between observer and reference viewpoints. Participants judged the relative position of objects from the perspective of either an avatar or an empty chair across alignment

Pediatric Cardiovascular Multiscale Modeling using a Functional Mock-up Interface.

PURPOSE: Computational models of the cardiovascular system continue to increase in complexity. As more elements of the physiology are captured in multiscale models, there is a need to efficiently integrate subsystems. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the effectiveness of a coupling methodology, called functional mock-up interface (FMI), as applied to multiscale cardiovascular modeling. METHODS: The multiscale model is composed of two subsystems: a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model coupled to a lumped parameter model (LPM). The LPM is packaged using the FMI standard and imp

Computational and biological modeling of IGF1R inhibition for multifocal medulloblastoma.

BACKGROUND: Leptomeningeal metastasis in medulloblastoma poses challenges for effective treatments due to the blood-brain barrier (BBB), which may be addressed through intrathecal or intraventricular drug delivery. However, the lack of pharmacokinetic modeling for pathological cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) geometries has limited the ability to predict effective intrathecal and intraventricular drug exposure. METHODS: A patient-specific computational fluid dynamics "in silico" trial was conducted to simulate CSF movement to examine the tumor microenvironment in terms of drug-target exposure over t

Human Purkinje cells outperform mouse Purkinje cells in dendritic complexity and computational capacity.

Purkinje cells in the cerebellum are among the largest neurons in the brain and have been extensively investigated in rodents. However, their morphological and physiological properties remain poorly understood in humans. In this study, we utilized high-resolution morphological reconstructions and unique electrophysiological recordings of human Purkinje cells ex vivo to generate computational models and estimate computational capacity. An inter-species comparison showed that human Purkinje cell had similar fractal structures but were larger than those of mouse Purkinje cells. Consequently, give

Computational Modeling of the Subject-Specific Effects of Annuloplasty Ring Sizing on the Mitral Valve to Repair Functional Mitral Regurgitation.

Surgical repair of functional mitral regurgitation (FMR) that occurs in nearly 60% of heart failure (HF) patients is currently performed with undersizing mitral annuloplasty (UMA), which lacks short- and long-term durability. Heterogeneity in valve geometry makes tailoring this repair to each patient challenging, and predictive models that can help with planning this surgery are lacking. In this study, we present a 3D echo-derived computational model, to enable subject-specific, pre-surgical planning of the repair. Three computational models of the mitral valve were created from 3D echo data o

Agent-based model indicates chemoattractant signaling caused by Mycobacterium avium biofilms in the lung airway increases bacterial loads by spatially diverting macrophages.

Incidence and prevalence of MAC infections are increasing globally, and reinfection is common. Thus, MAC infections present a significant public health challenge. We quantify the impact of MAC biofilms and repeated exposure on infection progression using a computational model of MAC infection in lung airways. MAC biofilms aid epithelial cell invasion, cause premature macrophage apoptosis, and limit antibiotic efficacy. In this computational work we develop an agent-based model that incorporates the interactions between bacteria, biofilm, and immune cells. In this computational model, we perfor

Spring assisted cranioplasty: A patient specific computational model.

Implantation of spring-like distractors in the treatment of sagittal craniosynostosis is a novel technique that has proven functionally and aesthetically effective in correcting skull deformities; however, final shape outcomes remain moderately unpredictable due to an incomplete understanding of the skull-distractor interaction. The aim of this study was to create a patient specific computational model of spring assisted cranioplasty (SAC) that can help predict the individual overall final head shape. Pre-operative computed tomography images of a SAC patient were processed to extract a 3D mode

New protocol for three-dimensional surgical planning and CAD/CAM splint generation in orthognathic surgery: an in vitro and in vivo study.

Inaccurate visualization of the inter-occlusal relationship has raised an important challenge to virtual planning for orthognathic surgery based on cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT). The aim of this study was to evaluate an innovative workflow for orthognathic surgery planning and surgical splint fabrication. The clinical protocol consists of a single cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT) scan of the patient, surface scanning of the dental arches with an intraoral digital scanner, and subsequent fusion of the two datasets. The "virtual patient" thus created undergoes virtual surgery,

Robust white matter lesion segmentation in FLAIR MRI.

This paper discusses a white matter lesion (WML) segmentation scheme for fluid attenuation inversion recovery (FLAIR) MRI. The method computes the volume of lesions with subvoxel precision by accounting for the partial volume averaging (PVA) artifact. As WMLs are related to stroke and carotid disease, accurate volume measurements are most important. Manual volume computation is laborious, subjective, time consuming, and error prone. Automated methods are a nice alternative since they quantify WML volumes in an objective, efficient, and reliable manner. PVA is initially modeled with a localized

The Genetic Origin of Uneven Cognitive Profiles in Heritable Neurodevelopmental Conditions and Individual Differences: Computational Investigations.

While the heterogeneity and co-occurrence of heritable neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and dyslexia remain issues of debate, these conditions are nevertheless all characterised by uneven cognitive profiles exhibiting strengths and weaknesses. There have been advances in understanding neural markers and genetic predictors of these conditions, but little insight into how DNA variation can influence functional brain development in such a way as to produce uneven cognitive profiles as developmental outcomes. Uneven cognitive profiles (

[Surgical reconstruction of maxillary defects using a computer-assisted techniques].

The maxilla is the most important bony support of the mid-face skeleton and is critical for both esthetics and function. Maxillary defects, resulting from tumor resection, can cause severe functional and cosmetic deformities. Furthermore, maxillary reconstruction presents a great challenge for oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Nowadays, vascularized composite bone flap transfer has been widely used for functional maxillary reconstruction. In the last decade, we have performed a comprehensive research on functional maxillary reconstruction with free fibula flap and reported excellent functional
