Social and behavioral factors associated with high-risk sexual behavior among adolescents.

Relationships among risky sexual behaviors, other problem behaviors, and the family and peer context were examined for two samples of adolescents. Many adolescents reported behaviors (e.g., promiscuity or nonuse of condoms) which risked HIV or other sexually transmitted disease infection. Such risky behaviors were significantly intercorrelated. Consistent condom use was rare among those whose behavior otherwise entailed the greatest risk of infection. In both samples, an index of high-risk sexual behavior was significantly related to antisocial behavior, cigarette smoking, and illicit drug or

Serological studies of babesiosis and anaplasmosis of cattle.

Bos indicus-crossbred calves exposed to natural Babesia bovis infection in wet and dry tropical environments in northern Queensland were tested for antibodies using the indirect haemagglutination (IHA) test. There was evidence of maternal antibodies suggesting endemicity of B. bovis in the 2 environments. Within one year 35.3 to 94.6% of the calves had acquired B. bovis infection. The highest titres and most rapid conversion rates were observed just after the wet season when the tick population was at its peak. Clinical disease was not observed. A third group of Bos indicus-cross cattle of var

Mycoplasma bovigenitalium in the upper genital tract of bulls: spontaneous and induced infections.

Mycoplasma bovigenitalium, was isolated from vesicular gland secretions of a large proportion of clinically normal pubescent bulls. Infections established at this site in 1 to 2 year old bulls sometimes persisted for over a year, induced a local immune response, and were associated in some animals with unacceptably low motility of sperm following freezing of semen for artificial insemination. Inoculation of as few as 1000 cfu directly into the vesicular gland sufficed to establish infection but the naturally occurring syndrome could not be successfully reproduced by this method. Intratracheal

A poxvirus of primates. II. Immunology.

OrTeCa poxvirus shares antigens with Yaba virus, as evidenced by two-way crossreactions in complement-fixation and neutralization tests. Antibodies produced by vaccinia and monkeypox viruses showed weak complement-fixation reactions with OrTeCa viral antigen, but neutralization reactions were negative and cross protection in vivo was not demonstrated. OrTeCa and Yaba virus antisera both contained complement-fixing and neutralizing antibodies against swinepox virus, but swinepox antiserum had no antibodies to any other poxvirus. Long-lasting immunity to the OrTeCa pox disease was produced in mo

Trichosporon inkin meningitis in a pediatric patient diagnosed via metagenomic sequencing.

BACKGROUND: Trichosporon has emerged as an important cause of invasive fungal infections in immunocompromised patients. There are limited data on invasive Trichosporon infections in children. CASE SUMMARY: We report a case of culture-negative Trichosporon inkin meningitis diagnosed via metagenomic next-generation sequencing of plasma and cerebrospinal fluid in an infant with retinoblastoma. In addition, we highlight the role of β-1,3-D-glucan in the diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring of trichosporonosis, and cross-reactivity of the cryptococcal antigen lateral flow assay with T. inkin. Comprehensive analysis of Toxoplasma gondii migration routes and tissue dissemination in the host.

Toxoplasma gondii is a highly adaptable intracellular parasite capable of infecting a wide range of warm-blooded animals, including humans. Following the ingestion of cysts and oocysts, the parasites rapidly emerge and transmigrate through the bloodstream, initiating a complex infection process. Despite reports on the parasite's dissemination, the mechanisms behind its migration remain unclear. Recent advances using innovative 3D models and various host systems are beginning to shed light on the migratory routes and strategies employed by T. gondii. This review compiles current knowledge on th

Zika virus productively infects primary human placenta-specific macrophages.

The strong association of Zika virus infection with congenital defects has led to questions of how a flavivirus is capable of crossing the placental barrier to reach the fetal brain. Here, we demonstrate permissive Zika virus infection of primary human placental macrophages, commonly referred to as Hofbauer cells, and placental villous fibroblasts. We also demonstrate Zika virus infection of Hofbauer cells within the context of the tissue ex vivo using term placental villous explants. In addition to amplifying infectious virus within a usually inaccessible area, the putative migratory activiti

Natural protection against HIV-1 infection provided by HIV-2.

Significant differences have been observed in the rates of transmission and disease development in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) types 1 and 2. Because many HIV-2-infected people remain asymptomatic for prolonged periods, the hypothesis that HIV-2 might protect against subsequent infection by HIV-1 was considered. During a 9-year period in Dakar, Senegal, the seroincidence of both HIV types was measured in a cohort of commercial sex workers. Despite a higher incidence of other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), HIV-2-infected women had a lower incidence of HIV-1 than did HIV-seronegati

The only domain which distinguishes Epstein-Barr virus latent membrane protein 2A (LMP2A) from LMP2B is dispensable for lymphocyte infection and growth transformation in vitro; LMP2A is therefore nonessential.

Using second-site homologous recombination, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) recombinants were constructed which carry an LMP2A mutation terminating translation at codon 19. Despite the absence of LMP2A or LMP2A cross-reactive protein, the recombinants were able to initiate and maintain primary B-lymphocyte growth transformation in vitro. EBNA1, EBNA2, and LMP1 expression was unaffected by the LMP2A mutation. The LMP2A mutant recombinant EBV-infected lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCLs) were identical to wild-type recombinant EBV-infected control LCLs with respect to initial outgrowth, subsequent growth,

Serological relatedness of monkeypox, variola, and vaccinia viruses.

Closely related human and monkey orthopoxviruses were differentiated by serologic techniques. Antiviral sera were tested by immunodiffusion for reactivity against six different viral antigens prepared from either infected cell cultures or infected chorioallantoic membranes (CAMs) of embryonated eggs. Portions of each antiserum were separately absorbed with heterologous antigens from infected CAMs to remove common reactivity. The absorbed sera formed immunodiffusion precipitates with both types of antigen preparation and revealed specific-character differences that made it possible to classify

Pharmacological implications of psoriasis and superficial fungal infections: Analysis of risk factors and underlying mechanisms.

Psoriasis (Ps) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that is often accompanied by superficial fungal infections, which may exacerbate disease severity and impact treatment effectiveness. This study investigates the association between fungal infections and psoriasis severity in the Kashgar region and identifies risk factors relevant to pharmacological interventions. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted among 196 psoriasis patients, evaluating clinical characteristics, psoriasis area severity index (PASI) scores, and the presence of fungal infections through microscopy and culture. Anatomy of a Hotspot: Chain and Seroepidemiology of Ebola Virus Transmission, Sukudu, Sierra Leone, 2015-16.

Studies have yet to include minimally symptomatic Ebola virus (EBOV) infections and unrecognized Ebola virus disease (EVD) in Ebola-related transmission chains and epidemiologic risk estimates. We conducted a cross-sectional, sero-epidemiological survey from October 2015 to January 2016 among 221 individuals living in quarantined households from November 2014 to February 2015 during the Ebola outbreak in the village of Sukudu, Sierra Leone. Of 48 EBOV-infected persons, 25% (95% confidence interval [CI], 14%-40%) had minimally symptomatic EBOV infections and 4% (95% CI, 1%-14%) were unrecognize

The interaction between PRRSV and the late gestation pig fetus.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) crosses the placenta during late gestation and productively infects the fetus. Virus replication and cytokine responses were measured in tissues of fetuses recovered at 109-112 days of gestation, just prior to parturition. At the time of recovery, gross anatomical abnormalities were evident in both infected and non-infected fetuses from the infected dams. Virus isolation and immunohistochemistry identified the thymus as the primary site of virus replication. Steady state RT-PCR amplification of inflammatory, Th1 and Th2 cytokines, sho

Cross-protection between Trypanosoma congolense strains of low and high virulence.

The aim of this study was to assess the existence of possible cross-protection between Trypanosoma congolense strains of low and extreme virulence circulating in the same trypanosomiasis focus. Groups of six mice were infected using one of three strains of low virulence and challenged with one of three strains of extreme virulence. A group of six mice was used as control for each strain of low and extreme virulence. The results showed that mice infected with one of the strains of extreme virulence developed high parasitaemia and a significant drop of the PCV compared to mice infected with a st

Acquired resistance of hamsters to challenge with homologous and heterologous virulent treponemes.

Hamsters infected with Treponema pallidum Nichols (venereal syphilis), T. pallidum Bosnia A (endemic syphilis), or T. pertenue (frambesia, or yaws) developed substantial resistance to homologous reinfection. Hamsters infected for 10 weeks developed no lesions, and their lymph nodes contained fewer treponemes after reinfection with the same strain. The degree of cross-resistance among the treponemes correlated well with pathological changes occurring in infected hamsters and with the persistence of treponemal antigen during primary infection. Only hamsters infected with T. pallidum Bosnia A dev

Respiratory syncytial virus infection induces heterologous protection against SARS-CoV-2 through γδ T cell-mediated trained immunity and the activation of SARS-CoV-2-reactive mucosal T cells.

Respiratory viruses can infect hosts concurrently or sequentially, potentially influencing each other's pathogenic trajectory. However, the underlying immune mechanisms governing these interactions remain poorly understood. In this study, we examined whether respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection modulates host susceptibility to subsequent SARS-CoV-2 infection using two murine models. We found that prior RSV infection conferred dose- and time-dependent heterologous protection against SARS-CoV-2. Transcriptomic and immunological analyses revealed that RSV activated lung antigen-presenting

The association of fungal infection in cervical cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence suggests a potential link between the fungal mycobiome and carcinogenesis. However, the relationship between fungal infection and cervical cancer progression remains inconclusive. This meta-analysis aimed to determine the pooled prevalence of fungal infection across different cervical pathological stages and assess its association with cervical lesions and HPV infection. PROSPERO CRD42024588513 is the registration number for the systematic review. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. We systematically s

Lower respiratory tract co-infection of Streptococcus pneumoniae and respiratory syncytial virus shapes microbial landscape and clinical outcomes in children.

BACKGROUND: Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI), which are most commonly caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae (SP) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), pose a substantial global health burden in children. However, the causal pathways of bacterial-viral co-infections, particularly the mechanisms by which commensal microbiota could modulate SP-RSV-associated LRTI outcomes remain to be elucidated. METHODS: A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted on children aged 0-18 years who were admitted to Beijing Children's Hospital and Baoding Children's Hospital in China from Septembe

Burden of scabies and bacterial skin infection in Kiribati: results of a national population-based survey 2023.

BACKGROUND: Scabies is a treatable neglected tropical disease with a high burden in Pacific island countries. Scabies is strongly associated with bacterial skin infection, which can lead to long-term sequelae. There is a paucity of epidemiologic data from Kiribati relating to scabies and bacterial skin infection. METHODS: We conducted a community-based cross-sectional survey over three weeks in November 2023 to determine the national prevalence of scabies and bacterial skin infection. Participants were recruited from ten evaluation units across all five divisions of Kiribati, including severa
