Development of a unified and comprehensive definition of successful spinal fusion: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Spinal fusion is a commonly performed surgical procedure used to relieve pain, deformity, and instability of various spinal pathologies. Although there have been attempts to standardize spinal fusion assessment radiologically, there is currently no unified definition that also considers clinical symptomology. This review attempts to create a more holistic and standardized definition of spinal fusion. METHODS: A systematic review of the current literature on cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spinal fusion was conducted using the PubMed, Google Scholar, and EBSCO databases adhering to P

CALM1 polymorphism in degenerative cervical myelopathy of the Indian cohort.

BACKGROUND: Degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM)– often termed cervical spondylotic myelopathy– is the most common cause of spinal cord injury in adults, arising from age-related degenerative changes in the spine. Genetic susceptibility may modulate which individuals develop myelopathy under these mechanical stresses. Calmodulin-1 (CALM1) is a gene encoding calmodulin, a key calcium-binding protein involved in cartilage maintenance and neural signalling, and CALM1 variants have been implicated in degenerative joint disease. We hypothesized that a CALM1 polymorphism could influence DCM risk.

Challenges and Outcomes in the Management of Periprosthetic Humeral Fractures: A Retrospective Study and Review of Current Approaches.

INTRODUCTION: Periprosthetic humeral fractures are a rare and increasing entity due to the rising number of shoulder arthroplasties. These fractures pose a significant challenge for surgeons, with incidence rates ranging from 1.2% to 19.4%. They can occur intraoperatively or as late complications, often influenced by trauma, prosthetic wear, or loosening. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on all patients admitted with periprosthetic humeral fractures over a four-year period (2018-2022). Inclusion criteria were postoperative periprosthetic humeral fractures with a minim

Characteristics of sagittal spinopelvic alignment in Thai population: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of spinal deformity is a significant health concern often associated with the aging process. It is primarily attributed to the thickening of spinal joints, ligament pathologies, or the narrowing of the spinal canal, leading to compression of the spinal cord and nerve roots, and subsequently causing musculoskeletal problems. When considering corrective surgery for adult spinal deformities, it is crucial for spine surgeons to take into account the standard values of sagittal spinopelvic alignment. Notably, there is currently a lack of specific data on this aspect withi

The long-term results of anterior surgical reconstruction in patients with postlaminectomy cervical kyphosis.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Postlaminectomy kyphosis of the cervical spine is a challenging condition to treat because it has a combination of an exposed cord, progressive kyphosis, segmental instability, and anterior neural compression. The ideal mode of surgical correction remains controversial. In terms of surgical strategy, there are few large series that have reported the long-term results of anterior surgical treatment of this condition. PURPOSE: This study was designed to determine the long-term results and outcomes of anterior surgical treatment alone for the patients of postlaminectomy cervi

Single Primary Retrograde Access to Treat Femoro-Popliteal Occlusive Lesions.

INTRODUCTION: The retrograde puncture of a distal artery is considered a bailout procedure in case of anterograde approach failure for peripheral artery disease (PAD) treatment. A single primary retrograde access has been suggested as an efficient and safe option. As scant data are available, we present our results using this approach. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between August 2019 and October 2022, we performed this technique in selected patients with femoro-popliteal PAD. Chronic total occlusions (CTOs) were selected on the basis of the CTOP classification. An ultrasound-guided retrograde punctu
