Background-aware decoupling and multi-granularity fusion-reconstruction approach for infrared small target detection.

In infrared small target detection (IRSTD) tasks, small targets are challenging to distinguish due to their minute size, sparse pixels, and features that closely resemble complex background textures. Existing detection methods predominantly employ multi-layer downsampling to extract small target features directly from infrared images. However, the merging and discarding of pixels during downsampling reduces the resolution of feature maps, causing small target pixels to be smoothed, obscured, or even lost. This leads to false alarms and missed detections of small targets. To address these issue

Urinary Cell-Free DNA detection platform for bacterial cystitis diagnosis via spot-based machine learning.

INTRODUCTION: Bacterial cystitis is a prevalent infectious condition that is primarily caused by uropathogenic Escherichia coli (E. coli). The rapid and precise identification of this pathogen is crucial for guiding timely and effective clinical intervention. Urinary cell-free DNA (cfDNA) has emerged as a promising biomarker for cystitis, yet its complex origins from both inflammatory and infectious processes pose challenges in distinguishing bacterial from non-bacterial etiologies. OBJECTIVES: Here, we developed an innovative image-based, machine learning-assisted fluorescent detection syste

Molecular and Serological Tests for SARS-CoV-2 Detection in Indeterminate Serology: Can We Skip the Second Sample?

Indeterminate serological results for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies create diagnostic uncertainty, requiring repeat testing after 14-21 days to establish seroconversion. This study evaluated whether direct viral detection methods could provide immediate diagnostic information in serum samples with indeterminate antibody results. We analyzed 163 serum samples from clinically healthy individuals collected during March-December 2020 in Bulgaria. Samples were categorized by screening ELISA (IgA/M/G) as positive (n = 69), negative (n = 47), or indeterminate (n = 47). All samples underwent quantitative IgG

Silk Fabric Functionalized by Nanosilver Enabling the Wearable Sensing for Biomechanics and Biomolecules.

Integrating biomechanical and biomolecular sensing mechanisms into wearable devices is a formidable challenge and key to acquiring personalized health management. To address this, we have developed an innovative multifunctional sensor enabled by plasma functionalized silk fabric, which possesses multimodal sensing capabilities for biomechanics and biomolecules. A seed-mediated in situ growth method was employed to coat silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) onto silk fibers, resulting in silk fibers functionalized with AgNPs (SFs@Ag) that exhibit both piezoresistive response and localized surface plasmo

Deep Learning-Based Computer-Aided Diagnosis of Osteochondritis Dissecans of the Humeral Capitellum Using Ultrasound Images.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasonography is used to diagnose osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the humerus; however, its reliability depends on the technical proficiency of the examiner. Recently, computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) using deep learning has been applied in the field of medical science, and high diagnostic accuracy has been reported. We aimed to develop a deep learning-based CAD system for OCD detection on ultrasound images and to evaluate the accuracy of OCD detection using the CAD system. METHODS: The CAD process comprises 2 steps: humeral capitellum detection using an object-detection algori

Tuberculosis Diagnostics and Localization in Chest X-Rays via Deep Learning Models.

For decades, tuberculosis (TB), a potentially serious infectious lung disease, continues to be a leading cause of worldwide death. Proven to be conveniently efficient and cost-effective, chest X-ray (CXR) has become the preliminary medical imaging tool for detecting TB. Arguably, the quality of TB diagnosis will improve vastly with automated CXRs for TB detection and the localization of suspected areas, which may manifest TB. The current line of research aims to develop an efficient computer-aided detection system that will support doctors (and radiologists) to become well-informed when making

Feasibility of Qualitative Testing of BCR-ABL and JAK2 V617F in Suspected Myeloproliperative Neoplasm (MPN) Using RT-PCR Reversed Dot Blot Hybridization (RT-PCR RDB).

BACKGROUND: Defining the presence of BCR-ABL transcript in suspected myeloproliferative neoplasm is essential in establishing chronic myeloid leukemia. In the absence of BCR-ABL, the conventional diagnostic algorithm recommends JAK2 V617F mutation testing to support diagnosis of other MPN diseases such as polycythemia vera, essential thrombocythemia, and primary myelofibrosis. In certain cases of thrombocythemia, simultaneous upfront testing of both BCR-ABL and JAK2 may be desirable. We wanted to test the feasibility of multiplex detection of BCR-ABL transcript variants and JAK2 V617F mutation

Evaluation of a new multiplex PCR assay (ParaGENIE G-Amoeba Real-Time PCR kit) targeting Giardia intestinalis, Entamoeba histolytica and Entamoeba dispar/Entamoeba moshkovskii from stool specimens: evidence for the limited performances of microscopy-based approach for amoeba species identification.

OBJECTIVES: Besides the potential to identify a wide variety of gastrointestinal parasites, microscopy remains the reference standard in clinical microbiology for amoeba species identification and, especially when coupled with adhesin detection, to discriminate the pathogenic Entamoeba histolytica from its sister but non-pathogenic species Entamoeba dispar/Entamoeba moshkovskii. However, this approach is time-consuming, requires a high-level of expertise that can be jeopardized considering the low prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in non-endemic countries. Here, we evaluated the CE-IVD-

Genetic studies of complex human diseases: characterizing SNP-disease associations using Bayesian networks.

BACKGROUND: Detecting epistatic interactions plays a significant role in improving pathogenesis, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of complex human diseases. Applying machine learning or statistical methods to epistatic interaction detection will encounter some common problems, e.g., very limited number of samples, an extremely high search space, a large number of false positives, and ways to measure the association between disease markers and the phenotype. RESULTS: To address the problems of computational methods in epistatic interaction detection, we propose a score-based Bayesian netwo

Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) signal analysis using automated generated projection images.

Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) tests provide promising molecular imaging biomarkers to more accurately and reliably detect and diagnose cancers and genetic disorders. Since current manual FISH signal analysis is low-efficient and inconsistent, which limits its clinical utility, developing automated FISH image scanning systems and computer-aided detection (CAD) schemes has been attracting research interests. To acquire high-resolution FISH images in a multi-spectral scanning mode, a huge amount of image data with the stack of the multiple three-dimensional (3-D) image slices is gener

Sensitivity of a new commercial enzyme-linked immunospot assay (T SPOT-TB) for diagnosis of tuberculosis in clinical practice.

Diagnosis of active and latent tuberculosis (TB) remains a challenge; however, over the last few years, a new approach based on detecting Mycobacterium tuberculosis-specific T cells has shown much promise. In particular, there is substantial published evidence showing that the detection of ESAT-6- and CFP-10-specific T cells using the ex vivo enzyme-linked immunospot technique is a marked improvement over the existing tuberculin skin test. This technique, which detects gamma interferon-producing T cells, is now available as the commercial assay T SPOT-TB (Oxford Immunotec, Oxford, UK). In the

Ultrasonic interference analysis and elimination for LED-based photoacoustic imaging systems.

Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) enables visualization of optical absorption contrast through ultrasonic detection, and light emitting diode (LED) based PAI systems have attracted attention due to their high repetition rates, portability, and cost-effectiveness. However, these systems typically require high driving currents and rapid switching speeds to activate the LEDs, which generates significant electromagnetic interference (EMI). In this study, we identified that this EMI induces currents within the ultrasound probe circuitry, driving the probe to passively emit ultrasonic waves and resulting

Left atrium incisure curvature: an indicator for predicting atrial fibrillation-related cardioembolism.

BACKGROUND: The use of supplementary parameters, such as clinical criteria, biomarkers, and imaging data, may enhance the risk prediction of stroke and systemic embolic events. Current stroke risk scores are clinically practical but limited in their ability to predict stroke risk accurately in individual patients. It is difficult for doctors to distinguish patients with truly high-thrombotic risk. In this study, we propose a simple and effective method for predicting stroke and systemic embolic events in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). METHODS: In this retrospective study, 169 patient
