Weaning stress and intestinal health of piglets: A review.

Weaning is considered to be one of the most critical periods in pig production, which is related to the economic benefits of pig farms. However, in actual production, many piglets are often subjected to weaning stress due to the sudden separation from the sow, the changes in diet and living environment, and other social challenges. Weaning stress often causes changes in the morphology and function of the small intestine of piglets, disrupts digestion and absorption capacity, destroys intestinal barrier function, and ultimately leads to reduced feed intake, increased diarrhea rate, and growth r

Aichivirus C isolate is a diarrhoea-causing pathogen in goats.

Aichivirus C is an emerging virus in goats, but its biological significance remains unknown. In this study, 18 diarrheic and 16 non-diarrheic faecal samples of kids were collected from a farm with an on-going diarrheic outbreak in Sichuan Province, China in May 2021. Of these samples, 77.8% (14/18) of diarrheic samples were detected as Aichivirus C positive by RT-PCR, which was significantly higher than that of non-diarrheic faces (0%, p < .001); meanwhile, other common diarrhoea-causing pathogens in goats were not detected in diarrheic samples, except for two samples that were detected as cap

The role of serum gastric peptide ghrelin hormone level in irritable bowel syndrome at Zagazig University Hospitals.

Generalized dysmotility of the gastrointestinal tract develops in individuals with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The ghrelin hormone appears to be critical in controlling gastrointestinal motility. We aimed to evaluate serum ghrelin levels in people with IBS and to demonstrate its role in IBS pathophysiology. This study included 32 individuals with IBS (16 with constipation and 16 with diarrhea) and 16 healthy individuals as controls. Blood specimens were collected from patients and controls following an overnight fast. Total ghrelin level was detected in plasma by commercially available ELI

Giardia and growth impairment in children in high-prevalence settings: consequence or co-incidence?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Giardia is a common intestinal parasite worldwide, and infection can be associated with clear, and sometimes persistent symptomatology. However, in children in high-prevalence settings, it is most often not associated with or is perhaps even protective against acute diarrhea. Nonetheless, recent longitudinal studies in high-prevalence settings increasingly identify an association with long-term outcomes that has been difficult to discern. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies have made progress in disentangling this apparent paradox. First, prospective, well characterized cohort

Comparison between somatostatin analog injections.

OBJECTIVE: Long-acting depot formulations of somatostatin analogs, i.e., octreotide and lanreotide, are the first-line medical therapies for patients with acromegaly to whom surgery/radiotherapy cannot be performed or who have inadequate response. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the short-term local and systemic adverse reactions developed after the somatostatin analogs injections in the patients with acromegaly, in order to compare the side effects of somatostatin analogs injections. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with acromegaly who were referred to our endocrinology clinic for monthly som

Effectiveness of interventions to improve drinking water, sanitation, and handwashing with soap on risk of diarrhoeal disease in children in low-income and middle-income settings: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Estimates of the effectiveness of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) interventions that provide high levels of service on childhood diarrhoea are scarce. We aimed to provide up-to-date estimates on the burden of disease attributable to WASH and on the effects of different types of WASH interventions on childhood diarrhoea in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). METHODS: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we updated previous reviews following their search strategy by searching MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and BIOSIS Citation Index for studies o

Slow progress towards pneumonia control for children in low-and-middle income countries as measured by pneumonia indicators: A systematic review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: The integrated Global Action Plan for Prevention and Control of Pneumonia and Diarrhoea (GAPPD) has the goal of ending preventable childhood deaths from pneumonia and diarrhoea by 2025 with targets and indicators to monitor progress. The aim of this systematic review is to summarise how low-and-middle income countries (LMICs) reported pneumonia-specific GAPPD indicators at national and subnational levels and whether GAPPD targets have been achieved. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, Embase, PubMed and Global Health Databases, and the World Health Organization (WHO) website. Publicatio

Hypomagnesemia in intestinal lymphangiectasia: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal lymphangiectasia (IL) is a rare disease characterized by dilation of lymphatic vessels and leakage of lymphatic fluids into the intestinal lumen, causing depletion of lymphocytes, protein, lipids, fat-soluble vitamins, and electrolytes. Hypomagnesemia can occur in IL patients but is seldom discussed. CASE PRESENTATION: A 30-year-old Tibetan woman who had chronic diarrhea, edema, tetany, and tingling was diagnosed with IL. Prominent hypomagnesemia was noticed. She was treated with a medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) diet and nutrient supplementation with satisfactory resul

Immunity to Cryptosporidium: Lessons from Acquired and Primary Immunodeficiencies.

Cryptosporidium is a ubiquitous protozoan parasite that infects gut epithelial cells and causes self-limited diarrhea in immunocompetent individuals. However, in immunocompromised hosts with global defects in T cell function, this infection can result in chronic, life-threatening disease. In addition, there is a subset of individuals with primary immunodeficiencies associated with increased risk for life-threatening cryptosporidiosis. These patients highlight MHC class II expression, CD40-CD40L interactions, NF-κB signaling, and IL-21 as key host factors required for resistance to this enteric

State of the art: the role of citrulline as biomarker in patients with chemotherapy- or graft-versus-host-disease-induced mucositis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Serum or plasma citrulline levels are used as biomarker for a broad spectrum of intestinal functions. During high-dose chemotherapy, citrulline levels are decreased due to mucositis, a common side effect of chemotherapy. This may decrease intestinal function and result in diarrhea. In this review, most recent studies investigating citrulline as biomarker for intestinal function are discussed, with focus on patients with oncological diseases, specifically hematological malignancies with chemotherapy- or Graft-versus-Host-disease (GVHD)-induced mucositis. RECENT FINDINGS: Cit

Increased Expression of Colonic Mucosal Melatonin in Patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome Correlated with Gut Dysbiosis.

Dysregulation of the gut microbiota/gut hormone axis contributes to the pathogenesis of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Melatonin plays a beneficial role in gut motility and immunity. However, altered expression of local mucosal melatonin in IBS and its relationship with the gut microbiota remain unclear. Therefore, we aimed to detect the colonic melatonin levels and microbiota profiles in patients with diarrhea-predominant IBS (IBS-D) and explore their relationship in germ-free (GF) rats and BON-1 cells. Thirty-two IBS-D patients and twenty-eight healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. Fecal s

Policy Challenges Facing the Scale Up of Integrated Community Case Management (iCCM) in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Integrated Community Case Management (iCCM) of malaria, pneumonia and diarrhoea is an equity focused strategy, to increase access to care for febrile illness in children under-5 years of age, in rural communities. Lay community members are trained to diagnose and treat malaria, pneumonia and diarrhoea in children, and to identify and refer very ill children. Today, many low-income countries including Uganda, have a policy for iCCM which is being rolled out through public sector community health workers (CHWs). Ten years after the introduction of the iCCM strategy in Uganda, it is i

Gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with COVID-19: Is there a relationship with mortality and new variations of SARS-CoV-2?

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Although, respiratory symptoms are typical the digestive system is also a susceptible target with gastrointestinal symptoms present even in the absence of respiratory symptoms. The gastrointestinal symptoms of COVID-19 include diarrhea, abdominal pain, anorexia, and nausea among other symptoms. Some questions that remain to be answered include: Do patients with gastrointestinal symptoms have a higher mortality? SARS-CoV-2 variants are already a global reality: Do these variants pr

Tetracyclines and photosensitive skin reactions: A narrative review.

Tetracyclines are a group of broad-spectrum antibiotics largely employed in infectious, dermatological and surgical fields. Some adverse events may occur during treatment, including photosensitivity reactions, which are divided in phototoxic or photoallergic. We performed a systematic search on Pubmed, Cochrane and Embase from database inception to August 9, 2020 aim to summarize all available papers on photosensitive reactions related to tetracyclines in all clinical settings where they are used on human being. On the basis of our inclusion criteria, we selected only randomized controlled tri

Viral Acute Gastroenteritis in Special Populations.

Viral acute gastroenteritis (AGE) is common and afflicts people of all ages. Nonviral causes of AGE are less common. Norovirus is a leading cause of sporadic cases and outbreaks of AGE across all ages. Universal rotavirus vaccination of infants has reduced frequency and severity of rotavirus AGE cases in children and indirectly reduced cases in older adults. Severe illness is more likely in persons at age extremes or with immunocompromising conditions. Viral causes of AGE can lead to protracted diarrheal illness in immunocompromised persons. Nucleic acid amplification tests are changing diagno

The role of disaccharidases in the digestion - diagnosis and significance of their deficiency in children and adults.

Disaccharidases are a group of enzymes of the small intestinal brush border, that are essential for degradation of disaccharides (sucrose, lactose, maltose, isomaltose, trehalose) into monosaccharides, which are then absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Their deficiency may occur at any stage of human life and have a genetic basis or be a secondary to ongoing gastrointestinal disease. Disaccharidase deficiencies cause disorders of digestion and absorption leading to occurrence of clinical symptoms such as abdominal pain, flatulence, diarrhea. For more than fifty years disaccharidase activ
