Zoonotic risks from small ruminants.

Zoonoses are infections that spread naturally between species (sometimes by a vector) from animals to other animal species or to humans or from humans to animals. Most of the zoonoses diagnosed in sheep and goats are transmitted by close contact of man with these animals and are, more often, occupational diseases that principally affect breeders, veterinarians and/or slaughterhouse workers. Some other diseases have an airborne transmission and affect the population in the vicinity of sheep/goat farms. Due to the fact that small ruminants are almost the only remaining animals which are migratin

Diseases of livestock in the Pacific Islands region: setting priorities for food animal biosecurity.

Most Pacific Island countries and territories (PICTs) have developing economies and face a critical shortage of veterinarians with limited financial resources allocated to their animal disease surveillance programmes. Thus, animal health authorities have to set priorities for better focusing their scarce resources. The main objective of this study was to identify animal diseases perceived to be of importance by decision makers within selected PICTs, at the regional and national levels, to ensure better targeting of animal health resources. A second objective was to investigate whether the targ

Influence of breed and genotype on the onset and distribution of infectivity and disease-associated prion protein in sheep following oral infection with the bovine spongiform encephalopathy agent.

The onset and distribution of infectivity and disease-specific prion protein (PrP(d)) accumulation was studied in Romney and Suffolk sheep of the ARQ/ARQ, ARQ/ARR and ARR/ARR prion protein gene (Prnp) genotypes (where A stands for alanine, R for arginine and Q for glutamine at codons 136, 154 and 171 of PrP), following experimental oral infection with cattle-derived bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) agent. Groups of sheep were killed at regular intervals and a wide range of tissues taken for mouse bioassay or immunohistochemistry (IHC), or both. Bioassay results for infectivity were mostl

Veterinary vaccines against toxoplasmosis.

Toxoplasma gondii is a cosmopolitan protozoan parasite that infects a wide range of mammal and bird species. Common infection leads to high economic (e.g., abortions in sheep) and human (e.g., congenital toxoplasmosis or neurotoxoplasmosis in humans) losses. With one exception (Toxovax for sheep), there are no vaccines to prevent human or animal toxoplasmosis. The paper presents the current state and challenges in the development of a vaccine against toxoplasmosis, designed for farm animals either bred for consumption or commonly kept on farms and involved in parasite transmission. So far, the

Reverse zoonotic disease transmission (zooanthroponosis): a systematic review of seldom-documented human biological threats to animals.

BACKGROUND: Research regarding zoonotic diseases often focuses on infectious diseases animals have given to humans. However, an increasing number of reports indicate that humans are transmitting pathogens to animals. Recent examples include methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, influenza A virus, Cryptosporidium parvum, and Ascaris lumbricoides. The aim of this review was to provide an overview of published literature regarding reverse zoonoses and highlight the need for future work in this area. METHODS: An initial broad literature review yielded 4763 titles, of which 4704 were exclud

Vaccines against Toxoplasma gondii: new developments and perspectives.

Toxoplasmosis caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii is a major public health problem, infecting one-third of the world human beings, and leads to abortion in domestic animals. A vaccine strategy would be an ideal tool for improving disease control. Many efforts have been made to develop vaccines against T. gondii to reduce oocyst shedding in cats and tissue cyst formation in mammals over the last 20 years, but only a live-attenuated vaccine based on the S48 strain has been licensed for veterinary use. Here, the authors review the recent development of T. gondii vaccines in cats, food-produ

Pathology of nasal infection caused by Conidiobolus lamprauges and Pythium insidiosum in sheep.

Conidiobolomycosis and pythiosis are important diseases of sheep in midwestern Brazil. Veterinary practitioners consider it difficult to differentiate between these diseases because they have similar clinical features. In this study, 186 sheep were subjected to necropsy examination over a 6-year period. Thirty (16.1%) cases of rhinitis in sheep that were caused by Conidiobolus lamprauges (n = 15) or Pythium insidiosum (n = 15) were investigated further. The lesions of C. lamprauges infection were mainly rhinopharyngeal (86.7%), localized to the ethmoidal region and associated with exophthalmos

Transpulmonary thermodilution cardiac output measurement is not affected by severe pulmonary oedema: a newborn animal study.

BACKGROUND: The transpulmonary thermodilution (TPTD) technique is widely used in clinical practice for measuring cardiac output (CO). This study was designed to investigate the influence of various levels of pulmonary oedema on the reliability of CO measurements by the TPTD method. METHODS: In 11 newborn lambs pulmonary oedema was induced using a surfactant washout technique. Serial CO measurements using TPTD (CO(TPTD)) were performed at various amounts of lung water. Simultaneously, CO was measured by an ultrasound flow probe around the main pulmonary artery (CO(MPA)) and used as the standar

Recent reproductive coercion and unintended pregnancy among female family planning clients.

OBJECTIVE: Reproductive coercion (RC)--birth control sabotage and coercion by male partners to become pregnant and to control the outcome of a pregnancy--has been associated with a history of both intimate partner physical and sexual violence (IPV) and unintended pregnancy among females utilizing reproductive health services. The temporal nature of associations of RC and unintended pregnancy (distinct from the impact of IPV), however, has remained less clear. STUDY DESIGN: A survey was administered to females aged 16-29 years seeking care in 24 rural and urban family planning clinics in Penns

Women's autonomy and experience of physical violence within marriage in rural India: evidence from a prospective study.

Evidence regarding the relationship between married women's autonomy and risk of marital violence remains mixed. Moreover, studies examining the contribution of specific aspects of women's autonomy in influencing the risk of marital violence using measures of autonomy that incorporate its dynamic nature are rare. We investigated the relationship between women's autonomy and their experience of marital violence in rural India using prospective data. We used data on 4,904 rural women drawn from two linked studies: the NFHS-2, conducted during 1998-1999 and a follow-up study for a subgroup of wom

Increase of carboxylesterase activity in Fasciola hepatica recovered from triclabendazole treated sheep.

In the present work, we evaluate in vivo the activity of carboxylesterase of Fasciola hepatica exposed to triclabendazole. We observed a statistically significant increase in enzyme activity at 24 and 48 h post treatment (P<0.01 and P<0.001, respectively). The zymogram of cytosolic fractions identified a protein of 170 kDa containing the carboxylesterase activity. The densitograms of the zymograms confirmed the phenomenon of enzyme induction under the experimental conditions of the assay. These results provide not only the understanding of the importance of this metabolic pathway in flukes but

No gold standard estimation of the sensitivity and specificity of two molecular diagnostic protocols for Trypanosoma brucei spp. in Western Kenya.

African animal trypanosomiasis is caused by a range of tsetse transmitted protozoan parasites includingTrypanosoma vivax, Trypanosoma congolense and Trypansoma brucei. In Western Kenya and other parts of East Africa two subspecies of T. brucei, T.b. brucei and the zoonoticT.b. rhodesiense, co-circulate in livestock. A range of polymerase chain reactions (PCR) have been developed as important molecular diagnostic tools for epidemiological investigations of T. brucei s.l. in the animal reservoir and of its zoonotic potential. Quantification of the relative performance of different diagnostic PCR

Physical violence by a partner during pregnancy in Tanzania: prevalence and risk factors.

Violence by an intimate partner, including violence during pregnancy, is an important human rights and public health issue. This paper presents the findings from large household surveys conducted in Mbeya and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in 2001-2002, as part of the WHO Multi-Country Study on Women's Health and Domestic Violence against Women. Seven (n=88) and twelve per cent (n=147) of ever-partnered, ever-pregnant women in Dar es Salaam (n=1,298) and Mbeya (n=1,205), respectively, reported being physically assaulted during pregnancy by their partner. Of those experiencing partner violence during

Targeted prevention of brucellosis in cattle, sheep, and goats in the Russian Federation.

The article presents a brief history of the brucellosis prevention in animals in the world and in the Russian Federation. Data are taken from studies on the immunogenic activity and epizootic efficacy of vaccines against brucellosis in animals, which made it possible, in the final analysis, to regard these preparations as highly important for brucellosis prevention. The relationship between the epizootic brucellosis situation in Russia and the employment of specific agents in targeted prevention of brucellosis in cattle, sheep, and goats, and the sequence of their use, are presented briefly, s

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in food production animals.

Until recently, reports on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in food production animals were mainly limited to occasional detections in dairy cattle mastitis. However, since 2005 a MRSA clone, CC398, has been reported colonizing pigs, veal calves and broiler chickens and infecting dairy cows. Many aspects of its prevalence in pigs remain unclear. In other livestock, colonizing capacity and reservoir status still require elucidation. MRSA CC398 has also been detected in meat, but, as for other MRSA, the risk this poses is somewhat unclear. Currently, the most worrying aspect of

Prevalence of intestinal parasites in pet dogs in the United States.

To determine the national, regional, and age-related prevalence of intestinal parasites in dogs presenting to veterinarians in the United States, we reviewed the results of examination via zinc sulfate centrifugal flotation of 1,199,293 canine fecal samples submitted to Antech Diagnostics in 2006. The most commonly identified intestinal parasites were ascarids (2.2%), hookworms (2.5%), whipworms (1.2%), Giardia (4.0%), and Cystoisospora (4.4%). With the exception of whipworms, intestinal parasites were more commonly identified in dogs less than 6 months of age (29.6% positive) as compared to t

Heart rate variability analysis allows early asphyxia detection in ovine fetus.

Fetal heart rate (FHR) monitoring is commonly used to predict asphyxia but clinical and experimental studies have questioned its diagnostic value. We examined the usefulness of fetal heart rate variability (fHRV) measures in detecting early asphyxia using chronically instrumented fetal sheep under normoxic (n = 6) and asphyxic conditions (3 umbilical cord occlusions, n = 6). The occlusions consistently led to pH decreases from 7.35 +/- 0.01 to 7.09 +/- 0.03 ( P < .05). FHR showed biphasic deceleration during each occlusion, associated with increasing arterial blood pressure ( P < .05). RMSSD,

Prevalence of Cryptosporidium infection in camels (Camelus dromedarius) in a slaughterhouse in Iran.

Cryptosporidiosis is a zoonotic protozoan disease of worldwide distribution, affecting a wide range of vertebrate hosts. Most data on the biology, distribution pattern, pathology and prevalence of cryptosporidial infection in farm animals is restricted to cattle, sheep and goats. Limited data is available in other domestic herbivores including camel. Numerous camels (Camelus dromedarius) are raised in the semi-arid regions of Iran. Although camel is acknowledged as a potential source of contamination, little is known with regards to the prevalence of Cryptosporidium in this population except a

Rabies in the Mongolian steppes.

Historically, rabies in Mongolia has been connected to the specific steppe and forest-steppe landscapes, known as the Mongolian steppes. The main reservoirs of the rabies virus (RABV) are the wolf, red fox and corsac fox. Fox rabies has been reported in Mongolia since the early 1960s. Eleven human rabies cases (0.4 per million inhabitants) were reported in Mongolia from 1994-2004. Wild animals predominated as a source of human infection: five people died following wolf bites, two were exposed to foxes, and four to dogs. From 1996-2004, 1,273 rabid animals were reported (about 140 per year). Ca

The action of albendazole on hydatid cysts in sheep experimentally infected with eggs of Echinococcus granulosus.

According to the Brazilian Agricultural Ministry, the prevalence of cystic echinococcosis in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil has decreased between 1990 and 1998, possibly due to the common use of albendazole to control parasites in sheep. Therefore, albendazole (ABZ) action was tested on hydatid cysts of sheep experimentally infected with eggs of Echinococcus granulosus in Uruguaiana County (RS) with the aim of evaluating the observed changes in the parasite's prevalence. The sheep were divided into three groups of 15 animals each and treated as follows. Group 01 was a control (without
