Atypical case of recurrent otitis with polyp formation in the ear canal associated with lagochilascariasis in a domestic feline in Brazil.

Lagochilascariasis is a neglected zoonosis that affects domestic and wild mammals, including humans, and can form nodules, especially on the neck. Although emerging, it is considered a rare disease in the Americas and, therefore, the objective was to report an atypical case of recurrent otitis with the formation of polyps in the ear canal in a domestic feline associated with lagochilascariasis in Brazil. A cat had a purulent exudate in one of her ears and responded poorly to treatments. During an otoendoscopy procedure, a polyp and nematodes were removed and sent for histopathological and para

Identification of a novel phenotype of external ear deformity related to Coffin-Siris syndrome-9 and literature review.

De novo germline variants of the SRY-related HMG-box 11 gene (SOX11) have been reported to cause Coffin-Siris syndrome-9 (CSS-9), a rare congenital disorder associated with multiple organ malformations, including ear anomalies. Previous clinical and animal studies have found that intragenic pathogenic variant or haploinsufficiency in the SOX11 gene could cause inner ear malformation, but no studies to date have documented the external ear malformation caused by SOX11 deficiency. Here, we reported a Chinese male with unilateral microtia and bilateral sensorineural deafness who showed CSS-like m

Using Stapes Velocity to Estimate the Efficacy of Mechanical Stimulation of the Round Window With an Active Middle Ear Implant.

OBJECTIVE: To test a method to measure the efficacy of active middle ear implants when coupled to the round window. METHODS: Data previously published in Koka et al. ( Hear Res 2010;263:128-137) were used in this study. Simultaneous measurements of cochlear microphonics (CM) and stapes velocity in response to both acoustic stimulation (forward direction) and round window (RW) stimulation (reverse direction) with an active middle ear implant (AMEI) were made in seven ears in five chinchillas. For each stimulus frequency, the amplitude of the CM was measured separately as a function of intensit

A novel immuno-molecular strategy for the detection of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes in human cerebrospinal and middle ear fluids.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is one of the most common microorganisms causing acute otitis media (AOM) in children. While bacterial culture of middle ear fluid (MEF) is the gold standard to detect the etiological organisms, several host and pathogen factors impact the survival of the organisms resulting in false negatives. To overcome this limitation, we have developed and validated an innovative multiplex immuno-molecular assay to screen and detect the S. pneumoniae 15-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV15; STs 1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 18C, 19A, 19F, 22F, 23F, and 33F) vaccine serot

Short communications: an ear-attached accelerometer detects effects of regrouping on lying, rumination, and activity times in calves.

The objective of this study was to use a sensor-based accelerometer (ACC) to identify changes in lying, rumination, and activity times in weaned calves during the moving and regrouping process. Overall, 270 healthy Holstein calves (from approximately 16 regrouping events) at the age of approximately 4 months were enrolled and equipped with an ear-attached ACC (SMARTBOW, Smartbow GmbH/ Zoetis LLC). Sensor data were recorded for 5 d before (d -5) until 4 d after moving and regrouping (d 4). The day of regrouping was defined as d 0. Acceleration data were continuously processed by specific algori

The cover of an ear thermometer probe as a split-thickness skin graft mold in external auditory canal reconstruction.

Maintaining the patency of the external auditory canal (EAC) during reconstruction is important because of its physiological role in hearing and immunological protective functions. The curved shape of the EAC presents a challenge when performing a skin graft. One of the key points for a successful skin graft is to ensure compression on the wound bed, and many novel methods, including prefabricated ear molds, have been reported for this purpose. In this study, we present a case of a skin graft performed to reconstruct a skin defect following excision of actinic keratosis in the EAC, using the c

Sperm calcium flux and membrane potential hyperpolarization observed in the Mexican big-eared bat Corynorhinus mexicanus.

Mammalian sperm capacitation involves biochemical and physiological changes, such as an increase in intracellular calcium ion concentration ([Ca2+]i), hyperpolarization of the plasma membrane potential and sperm hyperactivation, among others. These changes provide sperm with the ability to fertilize. In the bat Corynorhinus mexicanus, there is an asynchrony between spermatogenesis and sperm storage in the male with the receptivity of the female. For instance, in C. mexicanus, spermatogenesis occurs before the reproductive season. During the reproductive period, sperm are stored in the epididym

Evaluation of newly developed wearable ear canal thermometer, mimicking the application to activities on sports and labor fields.

We evaluated the reliability of a newly developed wearable ear canal thermometer based on three different experiments, in which ear canal and rectal temperature (Tear and Trec, respectively) were simultaneously monitored. In Experiment 1, participants sat at 28 °C and 50% relative humidity (RH), during which fanning or 41 °C lower legs water immersion was conducted. In Experiment 2, participants conducted a 70-min treadmill exercise (4 km/h, 0.5% slope) at 35 °C and 50% RH with intermittent fanning. In Experiment 3, participants completed a 20 min treadmill exercise (6 km/h, 5% slope) at 35 °C

Genetic basis of ear length in sheep breeds sampled across the region from the Middle East to the Alps.

Ear length in sheep (Ovis aries) shows a wide range of natural variation, from the absence of an outer ear structure (anotia), to small outer ears (microtia), to regular ear length. Up until now, the underlying genetics of this phenotype has been studied in four sheep breeds from China, Jordan and Italy. These studies revealed a broad range of genes significantly associated with ear length, potentially indicating genetic heterogeneity across breeds or geographic regions. In the current study, we performed genome-wide SNP genotyping and haplotype-based mapping, in a population of 340 individual

A Novel Otoplasty Technique Using Dermabrader on Prominent Ear Deformity Patients: A Retrospective Study and a Description of Technique.

UNLABELLED: Approximately 5% of the population has protruding ears. An antihelix deficiency or absence is a common cause of ear protrusion. Although there are over 200 techniques to manage prominent ears, there is no evidence to support using dermabraders in this situation. To the author's knowledge, this is one of the first articles to assess the clinical outcome of dermabrader use on patients with prominent ear deformities. METHODS: An analysis of retrospective medical records was conducted by the senior author on patients with prominent ears treated with our novel dermabrasion technique be

The spectrum of cochlear malformations in CHARGE syndrome and insights into the role of the CHD7 gene during embryogenesis of the inner ear.

PURPOSE: We reviewed the genotypes and the imaging appearances of cochleae in CHARGE patients from two large tertiary centres and analysed the observed cochlear anomalies, providing detailed anatomical description and a grading system. The goal was to gain insight into the spectrum of cochlear anomalies in CHARGE syndrome, and thus, in the role of the CHD7 gene in otic vesicle development. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed CT and/or MR imaging of CHARGE patients referred to our institutions between 2005 and 2022. Cochlear morphology was analysed and, when abnormal, divided into 3 groups in

Expression of MMP-14 and its role in bone destruction in middle ear cholesteatoma: A prospective observational study.

Cholesteatoma is a noncancerous cystic lesion caused by an abnormal growth of keratinizing squamous epithelium which is invasive and capable of destroying structures. A prospective study on the expression of membrane type1-matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-14) and its related influencing factors in middle ear cholesteatoma was conducted to fully understand the pathogenesis of cholesteatoma in the molecular level. We examined the expression of MMP-14 by immunohistochemical staining 39 middle ear cholesteatoma specimens and 10 external auditory meatus epithelial cell specimens. The cholesteatoma sp

Extraction of a Foreign Body From the Middle Ear Following a Complicated Hearing Aid Fitting: A Case Report.

Ear molding is a safe way to evaluate the ear for hearing aid fitting. A very rare complication of ear molding is the entry of a foreign body into the middle ear. We report the case of a three-year-old boy who had a perforated left tympanic membrane and bilateral sensorineural hearing loss that required the use of hearing aids. During the ear molding procedure, the molding material was unintentionally introduced into his middle ear cavity, necessitating immediate surgery to remove it. Such patients with tympanic membrane perforation must be handled cautiously while an aural impression is taken

Finite element analysis of conductive hearing loss caused by fixation and detachment of ligament and tendon in the middle ear.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The fixation of ligament and tendon of the middle ear often occurs after chronic otitis media surgery. However, there are relatively few studies on the effect of ligament and tendon on sound transmission in the human middle ear. Here, the finite element model and lumped parameter model are used to study the effect of ligament and tendon fixation and detachment on sound transmission in human ear. METHODS: In this paper, the finite element model including the external auditory canal, middle ear and simplified inner ear is used to calculate and compare the middle ear fr
