Model for Evaluating Antimicrobial Therapy To Prevent Life-Threatening Bacterial Infections following Exposure to a Medically Significant Radiation Dose.

More evidence is needed to support recommendations for medical management of acute radiation syndrome (ARS) and associated infections resulting from a radiological/nuclear event. While current guidelines recommend the administration of antibiotics to chemotherapy patients with febrile neutropenia, the clinical benefit is unclear for acute radiation injury patients. A well-characterized nonhuman primate (NHP) model of hematopoietic ARS was developed that incorporates supportive care postirradiation. This model evaluated the efficacy of myeloid growth factors within 24 to 48 h after total body i

Prevalence and distribution of antimicrobial resistance in effluent wastewater from animal slaughter facilities: A systematic review.

The extensive use of antibiotics in food animal production and disposal of untreated wastewater from food animal slaughter facilities may create a shift in microbiomes of different ecosystems by generating reservoirs of antimicrobial resistance along the human-animal-environmental interface. This epidemiological problem has been studied, but its magnitude and impact on a global scale is poorly characterised. A systematic review was done to determine global prevalence and distribution patterns of antimicrobial resistance in effluent wastewater from animal slaughter facilities. Extracted data we

Identification of a S-(2-succino)cysteine breakdown pathway that uses a novel S-(2-succino) lyase.

Succination is the spontaneous reaction between the respiratory intermediate fumarate and cellular thiols that forms stable S-(2-succino)-adducts such as S-(2-succino)cysteine (2SC). 2SC is a biomarker for conditions associated with elevated fumarate levels, including diabetes, obesity, and certain cancers, and succination likely contributes to disease progression. Bacillus subtilis has a yxe operon-encoded breakdown pathway for 2SC that involves three distinct enzymatic conversions. The first step is N-acetylation of 2SC by YxeL to form N-acetyl-2SC (2SNAC). YxeK catalyzes the oxygenation of

Effective cleaning and decontamination of the internal air and water channels, heads and head-gears of multiple contra-angle dental handpieces using an enzymatic detergent and automated washer-disinfection in a dental hospital setting.

BACKGROUND: Dental handpieces (DHPs) are reusable invasive medical devices that must be cleaned, decontaminated, lubricated and steam sterilized after use. DHPs have a complex internal design including narrow channels, contamination of which can compromise sterilization. DHPs are not designed for routine disassembly, making cleaning/decontamination efficacy difficult to monitor. Washer-disinfection is the preferred method of decontaminating DHPs, but few studies have investigated its direct effectiveness at reducing microbial contamination internally. AIMS: To use contra-angle DHPs as a model

Nanobased Antibacterial Drug Discovery to Treat Skin Infections of Staphylococcus aureus Using Moringa oleifera-Assisted Zinc Oxide Nanoparticle and Molecular Simulation Study.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

In addition to the physical barrier, the epidermis acts as a natural barrier against microbial proliferation. It is prone to bacterial infections on the skin and in the nose, such as Staphylococcus aureus, as well as a variety of other skin illnesses. Green nanomaterial production, which eliminates the use of harmful chemicals while simultaneously reducing time, is gaining popularity in the nanotechnology area. Using the leaf extract of the pharmacologically valuable plant Moringa oleifera, we described a green synthesis of ZnO NPs (zinc oxide nanoparticles). ZnO NPs had a particle size of 201

Antibiotic therapy of chronic bacterial prostatitis is more effective considering antibiotic susceptibility of all pathogens isolated.

PURPOSE: Because of the insufficient efficacy of the current treatment of chronic bacterial prostatitis (CBP), it is justified to search for a more effective antibiotic therapy (ABT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This single-centre prospective observational comparative study was conducted in 2012 to 2019 (patients: 60 men with CBP; age: 20-45 y). The clinical examination was performed on admission and at 1, 3, 6, or 12 months. All patients underwent the Meares-Stamey test to obtain expressed prostatic secretion (EPS) and/or post-massage urine (PMU) samples for extended bacteriological examination.

The prevalence of persistent bacteraemia in patients with a non-staphylococcal infective endocarditis, a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Current guidelines on the management of infective endocarditis (IE) recommend follow-up blood cultures (FUBCs) to identify persistent bacteraemia, as this has prognostic value and guides treatment decisions. While persistent bacteraemia frequently occurs in Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia and IE, its prevalence and impact in non-staphylococcal IE is largely unknown. We determined prevalence and prognostic value of persistent bacteraemia in non-staphylococcal IE. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of all patients diagnosed with definite non-staphylococcal endocarditis

Antimicrobial resistance dissemination associated with intensive animal production practices in Argentina: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Abuse and misuse of antimicrobial agents has accelerated the spread of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. The association between antimicrobial-resistant infections in humans and antimicrobial use in agriculture is complex, but well-documented. This study provides a systematic review and meta-analysis of the dissemination of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) to antimicrobials defined as critically important by the WHO, in swine, chicken, and cattle from intensive and extensive production systems in Argentina. We conducted searches in electronic databases (MEDLINE-PubMed, Web of Science, SciELO, th

The relationship among avian influenza, gut microbiota and chicken immunity: an updated overview.

The alimentary tract in chickens plays a crucial role in immune cell formation and immune challenges, which regulate intestinal flora and sustain extra-intestinal immunity. The interaction between pathogenic microorganisms and the host commensal microbiota as well as the variety and integrity of gut microbiota play a vital role in health and disease conditions. Thus, several studies have highlighted the importance of gut microbiota in developing immunity against viral infections in chickens. The gut microbiota (such as different species of Lactobacillus, Blautia Bifidobacterium, Faecalibacteri
