Therapeutic potential of mesenchymal stromal cells in COVID-19: a meta-analysis of clinical trials conducted since the pandemic onset.

BACKGROUND: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection can induce immune dysregulation and multi-organ injury; mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) therapy has shown promise in clinical trials for COVID-19 and may have broader applicability to pneumonia induced by respiratory viruses (e.g., the influenza virus). This meta-analysis synthesized the available comparative clinical evidence on the safety and efficacy of MSCs in patients with moderate to critical COVID-19 and examined the reported outcomes relevant to Long-COVID. METHODS: We searched the PubMed, Embase, and CN

A group-based yoga program for urinary incontinence in ambulatory women: feasibility, tolerability, and change in incontinence frequency over 3 months in a single-center randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Because of the limitations of existing clinical treatments for urinary incontinence, many women with incontinence are interested in complementary strategies for managing their symptoms. Yoga has been recommended as a behavioral self-management strategy for incontinence, but evidence of its feasibility, tolerability, and efficacy is lacking. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility and tolerability of a group-based therapeutic yoga program for ambulatory middle-aged and older women with incontinence, and to examine preliminary changes in incontinence frequency as the primary efficacy

Impact of central venous pressure on cardiorenal interactions in adult patients with congenital heart disease after biventricular repair.

BACKGROUND: Cardiorenal interactions adversely impact the prognosis in heart failure patients an effect which crucially involves increased central venous pressure (CVP). However, it is unclear whether the same pathophysiology operates in adults with congenital heart disease (CHD). PURPOSE: The present study was designed to assess cardiorenal interactions in adults with CHD after biventricular repair. METHODS AND RESULTS: We measured the kidney length (KL, cm/m) and renal resistive index (RI) in 77 consecutive patients and 30 controls. We also measured hemodynamics, plasma B-type natriuretic

2025 Clinical practice guidelines of the Mexican Society for HeartCare (SOMECCOR) and the Mexican Society of Cardiology (SMC) on Cardiovascular Rehabilitation and Prevention: therapeutic physical training and heart-healthy lifestyle. Developed by the Task Force for Cardiovascular Rehabilitation and Prevention of the Mexican Society for Heart Care (SOMECCOR) and the Mexican Society of Cardiology (SMC).

Comprehensive cardiovascular rehabilitation and prevention programs (CVRhP-P) are the cornerstone for improving maximum exercise tolerance, reducing mortality, improving health-related quality of life, and reducing healthcare costs in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). These types of programs have grown relatively slowly since their inception in the first decade of the last century, although the last 10 years have seen an increase in the number of centers, both in developing and high-income countries. In order to update and standardize scientific knowledge in this clinical area, the S

Dynamic Digital Radiography (DDR) in the Diagnosis of a Diaphragm Dysfunction.

Dynamic digital radiography (DDR) is a recent imaging technique that allows for real-time visualization of thoracic and pulmonary movement in synchronization with the breathing cycle, providing useful clinical information. A 46-year-old male, a former smoker, was evaluated for unexplained dyspnea and reduced exercise tolerance. His medical history included a SARS-CoV-2 infection in 2021. On physical examination, decreased breath sounds were noted at the right-lung base. Spirometry showed results below predicted values. A standard chest radiograph revealed an elevated right hemidiaphragm, a fin

Skeletal muscle mass loss and dose-limiting toxicities in metastatic colorectal cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence suggests that severe skeletal muscle index (SMI) loss (sarcopenia) is associated with poor overall survival in metastatic colorectal cancer patients, but its mechanisms are unknown. We recently found, using data of the randomized phase 3 CAIRO3 study, that SMI loss was related with shorter time to disease progression and overall survival during first-line maintenance treatment with capecitabine + bevacizumab (CAP-B) or observation and during more intensive capecitabine + oxaliplatin + bevacizumab (CAPOX-B) reintroduction treatment. Pharmacological approaches other than opioids in chronic non-cancer pain management.

Many pains are controlled by non-addictive procedures ranging from exercise to a variety of analgesic medications. Some pains are controlled by analgesic drugs, but at the cost of intolerable side effects. This is true both for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and opioids. The worst pains are most often controlled by opioids, but problems of tolerance and addiction limit these successes. This contribution provides a statement on non-addictive, non-opioid drugs which help to control pain. Just as these vary in their success, so they vary also in the strength of the scientific evidence whic

Pharmacological hypogonadism impairs molecular transducers of exercise-induced muscle growth in humans.

BACKGROUND: The relative role of skeletal muscle mechano-transduction in comparison with systemic hormones, such as testosterone (T), in regulating hypertrophic responses to exercise is contentious. We investigated the mechanistic effects of chemical endogenous T depletion adjuvant to 6 weeks of resistance exercise training (RET) on muscle mass, function, myogenic regulatory factors, and muscle anabolic signalling in younger men. METHODS: Non-hypogonadal men (n = 16; 18-30 years) were randomized in a double-blinded fashion to receive placebo (P, saline n = 8) or the GnRH analogue, Goserelin [

A cross-sectional assessment of the burden of COPD symptoms in the US and Europe using the National Health and Wellness Survey.

INTRODUCTION: Past research has suggested significant relationships between symptoms and health outcomes among patients with COPD. However, these studies have generally focused on a broad COPD sample and may have included those not receiving proper treatment. As a result, the aim of this study was to document the burden of COPD symptoms among those who are currently treated with the standard-of-care (SOC) medications in both the US and Western Europe. METHODS: Data from the 2013 US (N=75,000) and 2011 (N=57,512)/2013 (N=62,000) European (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and UK; 5EU) National He

The efficacy and safety of sildenafil in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension associated with the different types of congenital heart disease.

BACKGROUND: The difference in underlying pathophysiology in different congenital heart disease (CHD) may have an influence on clinical outcome. It remains unclear whether the effect of sildenafil on pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) varies in different types of CHD. HYPOTHESIS: The potential effect of sildenafil on pulmonary arterial hypertension related to CHD may be associated with shunt location. METHODS: In this 12-week, prospective, open label, multicenter trial, 55 patients with CHD were divided into the 3 groups: atrial septal defects group (ASD, n = 15), ventricular septal defect

Clinical significance of radiologic characterizations in COPD.

COPD is a heterogeneous disorder with clinical assessment becoming increasingly multidimensional. We hypothesized HRCT phenotype would strongly influence clinical outcomes including health status, exacerbation frequency, and BODE. COPD subjects were characterized via the SF-12, SGRQ, MMRC, physiologic testing, and standardized volumetric chest HRCT. Visual semi-quantitative estimation of bronchial wall thickness (VBT) and automated quantification of emphysema percent and bronchial wall thickness were generated. Multivariate modeling compared emphysema severity and airway abnormality with clini
