[Brain structural differences of schizophrenia patients with and without family histories].

OBJECTIVE: To identify the brain structural differences of schizophrenia patients and their parents between those with family history and those sporadic cases. METHODS: High resolution T1 weighted images were obtained using 3T MR from 10 familial patients and 10 sporadic patients matched with age, sex, years of education and duration of disease. All patients were in their first episode of care. Twenty unaffected parents of the patients (8 for familial cases, 12 for sporadic cases) and 20 normal controls were also examined. The images were preprocessed according to the optimized VBM protocol.

ABT-263: a potent and orally bioavailable Bcl-2 family inhibitor.

Overexpression of the prosurvival Bcl-2 family members (Bcl-2, Bcl-xL, and Mcl-1) is commonly associated with tumor maintenance, progression, and chemoresistance. We previously reported the discovery of ABT-737, a potent, small-molecule Bcl-2 family protein inhibitor. A major limitation of ABT-737 is that it is not orally bioavailable, which would limit chronic single agent therapy and flexibility to dose in combination regimens. Here we report the biological properties of ABT-263, a potent, orally bioavailable Bad-like BH3 mimetic (K(i)'s of <1 nmol/L for Bcl-2, Bcl-xL, and Bcl-w). The oral b

Eating disorders, parent-child conflicts, and family therapy in Shenzhen, China.

In this article, I report the results of a qualitative study conducted in Shenzhen, China, in which I aimed to (a) identify the characteristics of parent-child conflicts between Shenzhen youths suffering from eating disorders and their parents and (b) contextualize these intergenerational conflicts to understand their meanings within the immediate sociocultural context. I have employed multiple-case studies as the research design. Data have been collected through reviews of the family treatment sessions for ten families, each with an adolescent daughter suffering from eating disorders, and wit

Survival patterns among lymphoma patients with a family history of lymphoma.

PURPOSE: Genetic factors are important in the etiology and pathogenesis of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL), and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). Only a few small studies have assessed clinical characteristics and prognosis for familial patients, with inconsistent findings. METHODS: Using population-based registries from Sweden and Denmark, 7,749 patients with CLL, 7,476 patients with HL, and 25,801 patients with NHL with linkable first-degree relatives were identified. Kaplan-Meier curves were constructed to compare survival in patients with lymphoma with and without

Does a positive family history influence the presentation of breast cancer?

INTRODUCTION: An important risk factor for developing breast cancer is a positive family history of breast cancer. In Malaysia, there is no population-based breast screening programme, but the clinical practice guidelines suggest increased surveillance for those with a positive family history ie mammography for those 40 years old and above, breast self-examination and clinical breast examination yearly. OBJECTIVE: To determine if women with a family history of breast cancer present with earlier stages of disease. METHODOLOGY: From Jan 2001 to Dec 2006, 1553 women with breast cancer presentin

Patient interest in recording family histories of cancer via the Internet.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the interest of mammogram patients in using electronic tools for recording their family histories of cancer (FHC). METHODS: Semistructured interviews were conducted with 65 patients visiting a breast center at a referral hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. RESULTS: Most (n = 40; 62%) respondents expressed interest in using an electronic tool for recording FHC and associated its use with a range of benefits to themselves, their families, and their health care providers. Women who were not interested (n = 25; 38%) in using an electronic tool for recording FHC were con

Genetic clinics in arab communities: meeting individual, family and community needs.

Arab societies are characterized by a wide range of family and social structures, religious and legal conventions, and highly variable economic resources. As might be expected under these circumstances, genetic services cannot readily be devised, delivered, and assessed according to a single model. However, in general terms, the provision of genetic services in Arab communities at all population levels is still inadequate given the prevalence and burden of genetic diseases. Improving this situation calls for major educational efforts that include increasing the genetic literacy of the general

Family discord and proxy decision makers' end-of-life treatment decisions.

BACKGROUND: Because many Americans are decisionally incapacitated at the end of life, the last treatment decisions are often made by family proxies. Family discord concerning end-of-life (EOL) care may not only exacerbate a family crisis but also influence treatment decisions. We tested the extent to which family discord would be associated with preferences for types of end-of-life care, predicting that greater discord would be associated with weaker preferences for palliative care and stronger preferences for life-prolonging care. SETTING/SUBJECTS: Sixty-eight proxy decision makers for elder

Parental marital disruption, family type, and transfers to disabled elderly parents.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of parental marital status, marital history, and family type on intergenerational living arrangements and adult children's time and cash transfers to their unpartnered disabled elderly parents. METHODS: We used data from the Asset and Health Dynamics Among the Oldest Old survey to estimate the joint probabilities that an adult child provides time and/or cash transfers to a parent and to analyze a five-level categorical variable capturing parent-child living arrangements. RESULT: The estimates suggest significant detrimental

Structural and functional relationships of the XPF/MUS81 family of proteins.

Proteins belonging to the XPF/MUS81 family play important roles in the repair of DNA lesions caused by UV-light or DNA cross-linking agents. Most eukaryotes have four family members that assemble into two distinct heterodimeric complexes, XPF-ERCC1 and MUS81-EME1. Each complex contains one catalytic and one noncatalytic subunit and exhibits endonuclease activity with a variety of 3'-flap or fork DNA structures. The catalytic subunits share a characteristic core containing an excision repair cross complementation group 4 (ERCC4) nuclease domain and a tandem helix-hairpin-helix (HhH)(2) domain.

Tityus serrulatus Hypotensins: a new family of peptides from scorpion venom.

Using a proteomic approach, a new structural family of peptides was put in evidence in the venom of the yellow scorpion Tityus serrulatus. Tityus serrulatus Hypotensins (TsHpt) are random-coiled linear peptides and have a similar bradykinin-potentiating peptide (BPP) amino acid signature. TsHpt-I (2.7kDa), the first member of this family, was able to potentiate the hypotensive effects of bradykinin (BK) in normotensive rats. Using the C-terminal of this peptide as a template, a synthetic analog peptide (TsHpt-I([17-25])) was designed to held the BK-potentiating effect. A relevant hypotensive e

A family with a novel TSH receptor activating germline mutation (p.Ala485Val).

Autosomal dominant nonautoimmune hyperthyroidism (ADNAH) is caused by gain of function mutations in the TSH receptor (TSHr) gene and characterized by toxic thyroid hyperplasia with a variable age of onset in the absence of thyroid antibodies and clinical symptoms of autoimmune thyroid disease in at least two generations. We report here a Turkish family with a novel TSHr gene mutation with distinct features all consistent with ADNAH. Thyroid function tests of the proband were as follows: free T3: 13.1 pg/ml (N: 1.8-4.6); free T4: 5.1 ng/dl (N: 0.9-1.7); TSH: 0.01 microIU/ml (N: 0.2-4.2); and TS
