Autologous Mesenchymal Stem Cells Improve Motor Recovery in Subacute Ischemic Stroke: a Randomized Clinical Trial.

While preclinical stroke studies have shown that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) promote recovery, few randomized controlled trials (RCT) have assessed cell therapy in humans. In this RCT, we assessed the safety, feasibility, and efficacy of intravenous autologous bone marrow-derived MSCs in subacute stroke. ISIS-HERMES was a single-center, open-label RCT, with a 2-year follow-up. We enrolled patients aged 18-70 years less than 2 weeks following moderate-severe ischemic carotid stroke. Patients were randomized 2:1 to receive intravenous MSCs or not. Primary outcomes assessed feasibility and safe

Safety and feasibility of needlescopic grasper-assisted single-incision laparoscopic cholecystectomy in patients with acute cholecystitis: comparison with three-port laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

INTRODUCTION: Single-incision laparoscopic cholecystectomy (SILC) has been increasing in use steadily, and many researchers have reported the safety and feasibility of SILC. However, most studies were confined to selected patients and excluded patients with acute inflammation. In this study, we evaluated the safety and feasibility of SILC with our technique in patients with acute cholecystitis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Ninety-six patients with acute cholecystitis undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy at Uijeonbu St. Mary's Hospital (Uijeongbu, Korea) between October 2011 and December 2012 were

Intraosseous administration of lyophilized synthetic platelets renders hemostatic efficacy in rat model of traumatic hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: In traumatic hemorrhage, transfusion of donor-derived platelets improve hemostasis and survival, but their availability is often limited by supply constraints and short shelf-life. To address this, we have developed SynthoPlate (SP), a synthetic platelet nanotechnology that mimics the primary hemostatic functions of natural platelets, and have recently advanced its manufacturing into a shelf-stable, lyophilized powder for rapid aqueous-reconstitution and on-demand use. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of administering SP intraosseously in a ra

Salivary markers of aggression - The possible alterations in salivary hormones levels to identify perpetrators of aggression-related violence.

Aggression, understood as intentional actions aimed at causing harm, remains in a direct relation with the phenomenon of interpersonal violence, especially its physical form. Creating an objective marker of aggression would be an important tool for preventing, protecting the victims and maintaining control over suspects. There have been attempts to link aggression with shifts in hormone levels, including those that can be measured in saliva, especially testosterone and cortisol. The systematic review aimed to assess changes in salivary hormone levels among perpetrators of violence, with partic

Hormone replacement therapy and cardiovascular disease: the case for a randomized controlled trial.

The menopause is associated with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Oestrogen may influence various metabolic pathways which contribute to the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease, and observational studies suggest that in postmenopausal women oral oestrogen replacement therapy confers some protection against coronary heart disease and to a lesser extent against stroke. What is not clear is the magnitude of the cardioprotective effect and the overall balance of long-term benefits and hazards. Research is also required to establish the relative effects of oestrogen replac

Determination of cytomegalovirus IgG antibodies using stable element labeling and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry: Further evidence of the feasibility of antibody detection.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV), a β-herpesvirus with broad infectivity, establishes lifelong latency and poses significant risks to immunocompromised individuals, pregnant women, and newborns. Current diagnostic assays detecting serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) are mainly qualitative or semi-quantitative, limiting accurate quantification of high antibody levels. Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), based on stable lanthanide rare-earth element labeling, offers high sensitivity, absence of signal interference, and a broad detection range, making it suitable for biomarker detection. Performance and feasibility of single-grid dark-field radiography with a clinical x-ray source.

Objective.X-ray dark-field imaging extends conventional radiography by capturing small-angle scattering from subresolution micro/nanostructures, offering sensitivity to pathological changes that remain invisible in standard attenuation images, such as early microstructural alterations associated with pulmonary, oncological, and musculoskeletal diseases. Building on recent progress in single-grid dark-field imaging, we demonstrate that scattering-sensitive contrast can be acquired using a clinical x-ray source with a standard, non-coherent cone beam, under conditions representative of routine d

Exploring clinical feasibility of zero-shot learning in a large language model for immunofixation electrophoresis image interpretation.

INTRODUCTION: Immunofixation electrophoresis (IFE) is the gold standard method for detecting and typing monoclonal immunoglobulins, but its interpretation requires expert evaluation and remains susceptible to subjectivity and variability. Recent advances in multimodal large language models (LLMs) have enabled zero-shot visual reasoning without task-specific training. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and diagnostic performance of zero-shot multimodal LLMs for automated interpretation of IFE images. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A dataset of 487 immunofixation electrophoresis images repres
